Statement: IS ATHEISM LOGICAL? Atheism is the world view that denies the existence of God. More specifically, traditional atheism argues that there never was and never will be a God. But is this position rationally justifiable?
Atheism positively affirms that there is no God. But can the atheist be certain of this claim? You see, to know that a transcendent God does not exist would require a perfect knowledge of all things (omniscience). To attain this knowledge you would have to have simultaneous access to all parts of the universe (omnipresence). Therefore, as an atheist, to be certain of this claim you would have to possess Godlike characteristics. Obviously, mankind’s limited nature precludes these special abilities. The atheist’s dogmatic claim is therefore clearly unjustifiable. The atheist is attempting to prove a universal negative. In terms of logic this is called a logical fallacy.
The atheistic world view is inadequate for many other reasons as well. First, atheism cannot adequately explain the existence of the world. Like all other things, the world in which we live cries out for an explanation which is clearly beyond itself — however, the atheist is unable to provide one. Second, the atheistic world view is unable to provide the necessary preconditions to account for the laws of science, the universal laws of logic — and, of course, absolute moral standards. In short, the atheistic world view cannot account for the meaningful realities of life.
If individual atheists are serious about truth when it comes to God, let them consider the claims of Jesus Christ. He claimed to be none other than God in human flesh (John 1:1). This astounding claim was supported, however, by His matchless personal character, His fulfillment of predictive prophecy, His incredible influence on human history — and most importantly, the historical fact of His resurrection from the dead.

    1. Atheism
An atheist is a man who has no invisible means of support John Buchan (1875-1940) or Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878-1969) Atheism is a non-prophet organization Anon. Penguin Dictionary of Modern Humorous Quotations (amazon.co.uk) Atheism is not a religion or a philosophy. Atheism simply means "without belief in god(s)". There are two types of atheist:
  • Implicit atheist (lower case atheism) is a person who has not yet learned about god(s), theism or religion. All people are born implicit atheists
  • Explicit Atheist (upper case Atheism) is an atheist who understands what a god is and who has concluded that no such beings exist Atheism is not a moral stance or a moral choice, and individuals (including theists and atheists) adopt morals from their surrounding culture according to their own conscience.

    God Does Exist!

    Causes of Unbelief
There are several causes of people not believing God exists. 1. Some think there are contradictions in science and the Bible. They are not aware that what they think is science that contradicts the Bible is not really science, but more opinions. There are things which some think the Bible teaches which contradicts science. 2. Division in the religious world is another cause of unbelief. The atheist, Robert Owen, said in his debate in 1829 with Alexander Campbell that one reason he was an atheist was because of conflicting doctrines of religion. Jesus prayed that all believers in him would be one "that the world may believe that thou hast sent me" (John 17:20-21). 3. Those who claim to be followers of God, but live corrupt lives, cause unbelief.

The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason
by Sam Harris, New York: Norton, 336 pages, $24.95 For nearly as long as there have been villages, there have been village atheists, the hypervigilant debunkers who lovingly detail the many contradictions, fallacies, and absurdities that flow from belief in holy writ. As a strictly intellectual proposition, atheism would seem, on the face of things, to have wiped the floor with the believing opposition. Still, village atheists are as numerous, and as shrill, as they’ve ever been, for the simple reason that the successive revolutions in thought that have furthered their cause—the Enlightenment and Darwinism—have been popular busts. As the secular mind loses mass allegiance, it becomes skittish and reclusive, succumbing to the seductive fancy that its special brand of wisdom is too nuanced, too unblinkingly harsh for the weak-minded Christer, ultraorthodox scold, or wooly pagan. The faithful, meanwhile, take some understandable offense at this broad caricature of their mental capacity and ability to face life’s harder truths. So each side retreats to its corner, more convinced than ever that the other is trafficking in pure, self-infatuated delusion for the basest of reasons: Believers accuse skeptics and unbelievers of thoughtless hedonism and nihilism; the secular set accuses the believoisie of superstition and antiscientific senselessness.

Has Religion Made Useful Contributions to Society? by Bertrand Russell Excerpt: My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race. I cannot, however, deny that it has made some contributions to civilization. It helped in early days to fix the calendar, and it caused Egyptian priests to chronicle eclipses with such care that in time they became able to predict them. These two services I am prepared to acknowledge, but I do not know of any others.

    The Reagan Doctrine
    by Isaac Asimov
    from The Austin American-Statesman , May 10, 1981
Some time ago, Ronald Reagan pointed out that one couldn't trust the Soviet government because the Soviets didn't believe in God or in an afterlife and therefore had no reason to behave honorably, but would be willing to lie and cheat and do all sorts of wicked things to aid their cause. Naturally, I firmly believe that the president of the United States knows what he is talking about, so I've done my very best to puzzle out the meaning of that statement. Let me begin by presenting this "Reagan Doctrine" (using the term with all possible respect): "No one who disbelieves in God and in an afterlife can possibly be trusted." If this is true (and it must be if the president says so), then people are just naturally dishonest and crooked and downright rotten. In order to keep them from lying and cheating every time they open their mouths, they must be bribed or scared out of doing so. They have to be told and made to believe that if they tell the truth and do the right thing and behave themselves, they will go to heaven and get to plunk a harp and wear the latest design in halos. They must also be told and made to believe that if they lie and steal and run around with the opposite sex, they are going to hell and will roast over a brimstone fire forever. It's a little depressing, if you come to think of it. By the Reagan Doctrine, there is no such thing as a person who keeps his word just because he has a sense of honor. No one tells the truth just because he thinks that it is the decent thing to do. No one is kind because he feels sympathy for others, or treats others decently because he likes the kind of world in which decency exists.

Atheism and Agnosticism (GCSE) : Answers Abstract: The following article explores arguments atheists would use against the belief that God exists. Although atheists may have a wide range of reasons why they do not believe in God, the four most common arguments are explored here. These are, the problem of evil and suffering, Marxism (or an atheist political ideology), religion and science and the problems religions creates in the world. The main aspects of each of these of these are explored and possible Christian responses considered. The article concludes with some thoughts on agnosticism as middle way between theism and atheism. I recently discovered that an article of mine had achieved the noteworthy feat of getting listed in About.com's Opposition to Atheism page. Naturally, I was flattered. But the description that goes with the link ("Nasty, evil consequences of an Atheistic Philosophy") was less flattering than I might have hoped, and probably does not serve to set the scene I would have preferred. :-) So I thought a brief introduction was in order. My article was in response to a newsgroup posting about the nasty, evil consequences of religion . My intention was to defend Christianity by pointing out that: (a) Christians who have done evil in the name of their religion have been acting directly against the teachings of that religion; and
      (b) there are forms of atheism, such as much of the philosophy espoused by Frederick Nietzsche, which positively encourage a "might makes right" approach to life. When this sort of philosophy has been put into practice in history, we have seen great misery as the result.

It were better to have no opinion of God at all, than such an opinion, as is unworthy of him. For the one is unbelief, the other is contumely; and certainly superstition is the reproach of the Deity.

    EMPIRE
It is a miserable state of mind, to have few things to desire, and many things to fear; and yet that commonly is the case of kings; who, being at the highest, want matter of desire, which makes their minds more languishing; and have many representations of perils and shadows, which makes their minds the less clear. To speak now of the true temper of empire, it is a thing rare and hard to keep; for both temper, and distemper, consist of contraries. But it is one thing, to mingle contraries, another to interchange them. The answer of Apollonius to Vespasian, is full of excellent instruction. Vespasian asked him, What was Nero's overthrow? He answered, Nero could touch and tune the harp well; but in government, sometimes he used to wind the pins too high, sometimes to let them down too low. And certain it is, that nothing destroyeth authority so much, as the unequal and untimely interchange of power pressed too far, and relaxed too much.

    WHAT DRIVES ATHEISM?
A Deeper Look into the Mind of the Unbeliever (Note: This commentary includes a literary review of Professor Paul C. Vitz’s essay, “The Psychology of Atheism.”—Abby) “. . . I can honestly say that a return to atheism has all the appeal of a return to adolescence.” —Professor Paul C. Vitz, “The Psychology of Atheism” At this writing, the world is mourning the passing of Pope John Paul II, which occurred just thirty-six hours ago. The satellite news coverage has been non-stop for the past three days, featuring a seemingly endless procession of talking heads paying tribute to a man whose vision of peace inspired an entire generation of world leaders, politicians and average citizens everywhere. Even those who once had philosophical differences with the Holy Father (as he is respectfully and lovingly addressed by members of the Catholic faith) are lining up to speak about his admirable traits, such as his unquestionable character and his devotion to his faith. Indeed, there are some who are already calling John Paul II one of the truly great leaders of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Yet, there is one venue where the death of John Paul II is being openly and loudly celebrated with cheers, laughter, insults and tasteless jokes. I’m speaking, of course, of Web sites and message boards that are owned, operated and/or dominated by atheists.
