More on Huxley and the definition of Agnosticism
Huxley describes how he came to originate the term 'agnostic' as follows: When I reached intellectual maturity, and began to ask myself whether I was an atheist, a theist, or a pantheist; a materialist or an idealist; a Christian or a freethinker, I found that the more I learned and reflected, the less ready was the answer; until at last I came to the conclusion that I had neither art nor part with any of these denominations, except the last. The one thing in which most of these good people were agreed was the one thing in which I differed from them. They were quite sure that they had attained a certain "gnosis" had more or less successfully solved the problem of existence; while I was quite sure I had not, and had a pretty strong conviction that the problem was insoluble. And, with Hume and Kant on my side, I could not think myself presumptuous in holding fast by that opinion. [...] So I took thought, and invented what I conceived to be the appropriate title of "agnostic". It came into my head as suggestively antithetic to the "gnostic" of Church history, who professed to know so much about the very things of which I was ignorant; and I took the earliest opportunity of parading it at our Society, to show that I, too, had a tail, like the other foxes. [Quoted in " Encylopaedia of Religion and Ethics ", 1908, edited by James Hastings MA DD]

The following is the text of an address given by the founder of American Atheists at the Eighth Annual Convention of the American Rationalist Federation, on 25 August 1962, before the US Supreme Court had agreed to hear the case now known as Murray v Curlett. The speech was originally printed in The American Rationalist, Volume 17, Number 3, September/October 1962.
The indestructible foundation of the whole edifice of Atheism is its philosophy, materialism, or naturalism, as it is also known. That philosophy regards the world as it actually is, views it in the light of the data provided by progressive science and social experience. Atheistic materialism is the logical outcome of scientific knowledge gained over the centuries.
We make a fundamental error, I think, as we tilt at the windmills of imagined gods. We need to review from where we have come, under what conditions, and to see the threshold upon which we stand now.
The Inquisition, a papal invention for suppressing all opposition to the Catholic Church, savagely persecuted all progressive thinkers; Giordano Bruno, Ludilio Vanini, and Galileo come readily to mind.

Atheism is the ontological position that contrasts with theism , including both the view of those without belief in the existence of deities , and the view of those who actively deny such entities exist. In antiquity Epicureanism incorporated aspects of atheism, but it disappeared from the philosophy of the Greek and Roman traditions as Christianity gained influence. During the Age of Enlightenment , the concept of atheism re-emerged as an accusation against those who questioned the religious status quo , but by the late 18th century it had become the philosophical position of a growing minority. By the 20th century , along with the spread of rationalism and humanism , atheism had become a common position, predominant among scientists in particular (see international survey of contemporary atheism As is the case with similar non-deistic concepts in agnosticism, there is no proposition that all atheists can be said to assent to. Many atheists do share common concerns regarding evidence and scientific method , but maintain that atheism is neither a religion nor a set system of beliefs (but see #Is atheism a belief?

Elements of Atheism in Hindu Thought

The Carvaka school of Indian atheistic materialism probably best represents a pure school of such thought in the world of Hindu philosophy. The name “Carvaka ” can be traced to two places in the Hindu mythos. Certain Sanskrit texts refer to a philosopher named Carvaka who began this school of extreme materialism. In the Mahabarata , Carvaka is a raksasa friend of the prince Duryodhana who disguised himself as a Brahmin and reviled Yudhisthira’s triumphant entry into Hastinapura after the Great War, preaching profane, atheistic, and heretical doctrines. He was soon exposed by real Brahmins and reduced to ashes by the fire of their eyes. The latter Carvaka most likely represents a metaphorical polemic by the outraged leaders of more orthodox schools of thought. This school of thought is also called Lokayata, from loka , the Sanskrit word for “world,” since it holds that only the materialistic world exists and nothing more, such as the soul, heaven, or hell. Virtually all that is known of this system of thought derives from polemical texts trying their best to refute or deride their doctrines. Some texts include the

Modern Michael Martin : Atheism and Intraorganizational Free Speech (1996)
Atheism and Intraorganizational Free Speech (1996)
Michael Martin
What position should atheists take on freedom of speech? In particular, what stand should atheistic organizations take in regard to the freedom of speech of its members? Should they censor members who do not adhere to particular doctrines which, even if they are not entailed by atheism, are deemed important by the organization? Consider two hypothetical cases that illustrate the problem. 1. The Case of the Gotham City Rationalists and Humanists: The Gotham City Rationalists and Humanists (GCRH) maintain that people who are rational should not believe in God and should accept a humanistic value theory, that is, they should believe that moral values are relative to human experience and that values are made by human decisions, not discovered. Mary Jones is a member of GCRH who disagrees. She believes that there are important values that cannot be incorporated into this framework and has asked if she can present a paper to GCRH defending her claim. Her request is denied and her membership in GCRH is terminated by a polite letter from the President saying that her further participation in GCRH would serve "no useful purpose" and that her membership is being canceled for "the good of the organization."[
The Issue
I will not be concerned here with the legal issue of whether GCRH and CCA infringe the first amendment rights of Jones and McCord. Rather, I want to discuss whether GCRH and CCA acted both morally and wisely in taking the actions they did. I will argue that they did not. My position will be based on two arguments. First, using an argument first developed by John Stuart Mill, I will maintain that suppression of the speech of Jones and McCord is unjustified. Second, I will argue that atheistic organizations who censor the views of their members adopt the suppressive methods of traditional religion and thus are in prima facie conflict with the goal of freedom that such organizations have fought so long to achieve. As a result their actions are inconsistent and self-defeating.

This is one nation under God." Dan Barker, Author: " Losing Faith in Faith :" I have something to say to the religionist who feels atheists never say anything positive: You are an intelligent human being. Your life is valuable for its own sake. You are not second-class in the universe, deriving meaning and purpose from some other mind. You are not inherently evil you are inherently human, possessing the positive rational potential to help make this a world of morality, peace and joy. Trust yourself. "
