Credit-Recovery Program Helps At-Risk Students Meet Promotional Requirements
By John Washburn, Categorical Coordinator, Castle Park Middle School
August 2004 - Applications
Castle Park Middle School, located in Chula Vista, Calif., just south of San Diego and a few miles north of the Mexican border, has 1,550 students in grades seven and eight. The school is located in a predominately working-class neighborhood, and 83% of our students are of Hispanic origin. While our attendance rate is excellent at about 98%, we still struggle with academic achievement. Our district, the Sweetwater Union High School District, recently installed promotional requirements mandating that each student must pass all four semesters of English and math during his or her middle school years in order to participate in promotional exercises, and later be able to take electives rather than extra English and/or math classes at the high school level. Last year we realized that too many students were failing English and math classes, making them ineligible to officially be promoted. We had tried after-school credit-recovery programs in the past, but they were unpopular and it was hard to get students to attend the required number of hours. Being a schoolwide Title I school, we have substantial federal funds to provide supplemental programs for struggling students. My goal was to incorporate appropriate supplemental materials that would help promote all students to high school under our new requirements.

Entrepreneurial Aspirations of At-Risk Students

Abstract
Entrepreneurship education for at-risk children can be defined as a method that develops those attitudes that help students at-risk to take responsibility over their own action and also to benefit their creativity within learning situations and later in their lives. The role of quality entrepreneurship and training in identifying and nurturing entrepreneurial aspirations among student at-risk is important to educators and policy makers. Thus a study was conducted to investigate at-risk students' entrepreneurial aspirations. A total of 897 students categorized as at-risk students in the Malaysian school system participated in the study. There is a significant difference regarding entrepreneurial aspirations between at-risk students following different vocational education programmes. Those students who plan to have own business score higher mean in entrepreneurial traits, academic efficacy and entrepreneurial motivation

Closing the Gaps: A Look at High-Risk Students CCSSE is committed to helping colleges use data in their efforts to close critical gaps in educational attainment. Toward that end, CCSSE has identified, and is tracking data for, high-risk students. These students are disproportionately African American, Hispanic, and female. The following risk factors are reflected in the CCSSE survey:
  • being academically underprepared (i.e., students who have not earned a high school diploma and/or have participated or plan to participate in developmental/remedial education); being a single parent; being financially independent (i.e., students who rely on their own income or savings as a major source for college costs and indicate that parents and spouses/significant others are not sources of income for that purpose); caring for children at home;

The Pacific Rim is known as the "Ring of Fire" because it lies on an active tectonic belt of earthquakes and active volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean. All individuals and communities residing in nations along the rim of the Pacific Ocean are exposed to natural hazard risk. And as cultures become more interconnected and lifelines more valuable, the devastating effects of a local disaster can increasingly ripple around the world to impact distant countries. In fact, it is estimated that the next major natural hazard in the Pacific Rim could kill as many as one million people and devastate the global economies that are so closely linked in the region.
With the rapid population growth and expansion of global interdependence, it is more important than ever to educate and prepare the public. Although natural hazards cannot be avoided, experience has taught us that the tragedy of human and economic loss can be minimized through increased planning and awareness.

The Vanishing Rainforest
It is no secret that our rainforests are quickly becoming an endangered species in and of themselves. It is our commitment to do whatever possible to educate those around us to the extreme importance of the forests and how vulnerable they are to the destructive forces of man. Please take a look at what we have included in our research project. If you have anything you feel should be include on our pages, please drop us a line. In conjunction with our tropical rain forest project, Dale Beasley's sixth grade class of St. Philomena School in Des Moines, Washington, has completed a project entitled, "Rainforests of the Pacific Northwest", examining a different type of rainforest right in our own country.
