This Week's Topic Supporting At-Risk Students
School systems apply various descriptors to determine students at risk of failing or dropping out. Unfortunately, necessary procedures often delay interventions for such students. Thus, classroom teachers find themselves working with students in need of serious interventions and at times feel ill-equipped to work with such youngsters. This week, we offer tips to promote positive interactions between teachers and at-risk students. This Week's Tips

COMMITTEE ON ‘ACADEMIC SALVAGE’ FOR AT-RISK STUDENTS AFTER MIDTERM MARKS Mid-term marks indicate a projected academic result in the current slate of courses for each student, and serve as a guideline for assessing progress. WHO IS AN AT-RISK STUDENT? Students with an academic Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 60% are at risk of being placed on probation at year’s end; students with a GPA of less than 50% are at risk of being placed under academic suspension at year’s end. Business Administration students with a GPA of less than 70% are at risk of losing their eligibility for the Business Administration Program. Third-quarter students with a GPA of less than 65% are at risk of being denied entrance to Honours in some academic Departments, and if in their fourth quarter, are at risk of being denied an Honours-level degree. International students have a student visa allowing them residence in Canada while at Trent; in most cases this is conditional upon their being registered in no fewer than 3.5 courses during the Fall-Winter academic year and 2.0 courses of they begin their course of study during the Winter term. Summer courses taken may not be counted as part of these academic loads.

Over five million children in the US are served by Title I schools. Following the implementation of the Improving America's Schools Act (IASA) in 1994, Title I has sought to assist schools in helping children to gain the knowledge they need for academic success. As one of the foremost journals specifically aimed at the improvement of the educational experience of at-risk students, JESPAR assists researchers, policy makers, and practitioners in identifying what programs and policies work in our schools today. The Journal of Education for Students Placed At Risk JESPAR ) was co-founded in 1996 at the Johns Hopkins University, the Center for Social Organization of Schools, by Sam Stringfield and John H. Hollifield, with the belief that effective educational practices and programs exist that make a difference in the lives of students who, for a variety of reasonsracial, economic, family, linguistic, or otherare placed at risk of academic failure. We at the Journal of Education for Students Placed at Risk know that you share our commitment to meeting the needs of students from impoverished, minority, and disadvantaged backgrounds.

A student may or may not ask for help. It is important to be able to identify a student who may be feeling distressed.
Faculty and staff are often in a position to identify students who are "at risk." Recognizing the signs of emotional distress and responding with interest and concern in a timely manner may be a critical factor in helping students resolve problems that are interfering with academic achievement. The following guidelines, which are also available in PDF below, outline when professional counselling might be beneficial to a student and how to make a referral to on-campus counselling resources . Confidentiality and information about emergency services and consultation are also described. We appreciate the concern faculty and staff have for the well-being of students and recognize the central role that faculty and staff play in linking students to campus resources.

PACE - Pursuing Academic and Career Excellence
Welcome to PACE School
PACE is an alternative school for at risk high school students in the Duncanville ISD. The school is for students who have fallen behind in their class work for one reason or another. Many of our students attain a higher level of success because of the smaller teacher student ratios and individualized learning. Students work on basic core curriculum classes as well as electives. Students at PACE are in the 9th to the 12th grade and are from 15 to 21 years old.
To enroll, a student and parent/guardian must meet with staff for an initial evaluation interview to discuss the student's needs and goals. Through the interview it will be determined if PACE is the best academic option for the student. Who Are The At-Risk Students? How to determine if a student is at-risk is not an easy task. Educators, policy makers and the general public debate over what makes a student at-risk and what role schools, families and students themselves play in this process. Presently, there are four approaches used by schools and policy makers to define at-risk students. These are the predictive, descriptive, unilateral, and school factors approaches

In the past, educators have had lower expectations for at-risk students. The emphasis has been on the acquiston of basic skills, often using pull-out programs and remedial help (Means, 1997). Means and Knapp (1991) noted that by not challenging at-risk students, or by not encouraging them to use complex thinking skills, schools are underestimating students' capabilites, and postponing interesting and meaningful work these students could be doing. This deprives them of a meaningful context for learning, and does not allow them to use the skills they have been taught.
Advantages of Using Hypertext with At-Risk Students There are a number of hypertext programs that serve the at-risk students. These programs provide an important social prop as students do not have to contend with the stigma of being "dumb", afraid to ask questions or ask for help (McCullough, 1992). Students learn to work at their own pace in a non-threatening and a non-embarrassing environment. In one English course called
