Webcam Astrophotography
Home All the pictures on this website were taken with a 10 inch Meade LX200 GPS telescope and an unmodified Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000.
13 October 2003 - The company that were supposed to modify my webcam to take long exposures broke it. I could not afford another. They 'were financially unable to help and pleaded innocence'. 5 June 2004 - GREAT news: Mr. Charles E. Floyd of Phenix City, USA took pity on me and send me a new webcam as well as a Baader UV/IR filter free of charge. Thanks a lot. So I am taking webcam pictures again. Results for the Moon and Jupiter are posted below ... 10 August 2004 BAD news again. During the past 2 months industrial pollution got VERY bad at my current observatory location (farm plot). I am urgently looking for a new location. Then I will be busy full time adding webcam pics to this website. ( I plan to add at least 100 pics a month - I am unemployed and bored - so I will have no excuse. ) It is the end of Winter here now, so many people around us burn their ugly dry grass farm plots in preparation for letting it grow all by itself again. Informal settlements - with their cooking fires - also grow like wildfire . Hartbeespoort is growing VERY quickly too. Last year there were 3 families on this plot - there now are 7 - soon to be 8 ( each with new houses ). It is not uncommon to have 5 to 7 high-smoke-content fires visible daily from where I stay - some people light their massive fires at night ( thinking its smoke clouds will then bother no one ).

Jupiter
The weather in this area is turning nicer and with that, I find myself hauling out the 'scope more and more often. Tonight I focused on Jupiter and its Galilean moons and our own Moon. Clouds slowly rolled over the sky from the southeast and prompted a most hasty telescope setup. Once ready, I went straight for the high power (10mm) eyepiece and was dazzled by the giant planet and four of its many moons. Sarah was present and she was likewise blown away at the sight. Our Orion telescope did exactly what I'd hoped in revealing multiple bands of clouds on Jupiter as well as allowing us to see the shadow of one of the moons (my bet lies with Io) on Jupiter's atmosphere!
Thanks to a graphical ephemeris of Jupiter and it's moons found at http://www.calsky.com/cs.cgi/Planets/6/6 to help me I.D. all the little dots in my photo. map
The Moon
Had a great view of a crescent moon tonight so I decided to zoom in through a yellow filter and take a few shots. I later stitched the best ones together in Photoshop. The final mosaic was over 4000 pixels tall! Great for printing but not for the web (hence the significantly reduced version).

Hello and welcome to Thurgoona Astronomy...
Updates:
If you do one thing this month then why not get this to the top of your list:
Try to help Schapelle Corby:
This Sydney Morning Herald article by Philip Cornford may give you a good idea of what has happened to Schapelle Corby.
This article by Robert Wainwright may give you a better idea about who Schapelle Corby is.
It’s not over.
It’s not hopeless.
Making noise always makes a difference.
Write to Federal Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer and ask what is being done to save Schapelle Corby from being imprisoned for visiting Bali for a holiday. Be polite. Provide a postal address and you should receive a reply. Get A Petition Going: Get more info and download petition forms here It’s not OK Don’t give up. Uh Oh it’s pesky Mars again, and this time, if you believe what you read in some publications, it will be “as big as the Moon”. What a happy night that would be for astronomers! We think that this latest astro rumour might have got started by someone saying “In a telescope Mars would look as big as the Moon does naked eye” or something like that. The fact is that Mars will be a very nice sight in any telescope in the next few months with the best views early to mid November so go out and borrow a telescope or beg some amateur astronomer for a look through theirs. http://www.astroleague.org/al/astrnote/astnot01.html
Astro Note 1:Polar Alignment in the Field If a telescope's polar axis is not aligned with (pointed at) the north Celestial Pole, any clock drive will fail to keep the telescope pointed at a chosen object. In addition, the mounting's setting circles will not yield correct coordinates. Long exposure astrophotography will need more accurate alignment than the methods presented here. However, the needs of short exposures (a few minutes) and visual observing will usually be satisfied by these techniques.
Method 1: Alignment to Polaris
Before beginning the procedure, Polaris must be located in the finderscope. To do this, set the declination axis parallel to the ground. Then move the telescope tube in declination only and rotate the telescope base to direct locate Polaris somewhere in the finderscope field. Step 1: With the declination axis still parallel to the ground and Polaris in the finder field (e.g., at point a), move the tube in declination only until Polaris moves to the horizontal crosshair (i.e., to point b). Refer to the figure for Step 1, below.

Did you receive an e-mail saying that Mars will be "bigger than the Full Moon"?!
By Claire Flanagan, Johannesburg Planetarium No it won't - the e-mail that reports this is a badly-written article about the Mars closest-approach of 2003.

Lunar parallax project By Dr Barbara Cunow Have you ever wondered what you would experience if you could observe the Moon from different continents at the same time? Well, one of the things you would see is that the position of the Moon, relative to the background stars, is not the same everywhere, but depends on where you are on the Earth's surface. Astronomical images and equipment information.
http://www.geocities.com/lx2hundred/Garysastrophotos.html
Gary's Astrophotography Page Astronomy Links Jeff's Astro Site Astronomy Magazine My name is Gary Moore. I live about two hours North of San Francisco in Lake County. The skies are good and dark, perfect for astrophotography. I got into astronomy about five years ago with a department store scope. I then got an LX-50 and now I have a 10" LX-200 which in my opinion is one of the best GoTo scopes available today. As you can see, I read Sky & telescope magazine. Gary Moore Name: moores@pacific.net Email: This site is designed to show that it does not take a lot of expensive equipment to take good astrophoto's. The equipment that I use is a Meade 10" LX-200 and a Pentax K1000 35mm camera. I have just accuired an SBIG ST-4 autoguider and will be attempting to take autoguided exposures in the near future. I will make a note of the photo's that have been guided with the ST-4. M33 using Fuji 800 X-Tra print film. Manually guided exposure for 45 minutes at prime focus. "A LITTLE ABOUT ME" Astrophotography is a hit and miss hobby. You can shoot a full roll of film and if you get one or two good images out of it, you can say that you have had a good night. Condtions have to be just right so that the object you are imaging are not in an area where there is a lot of upper air turbulance. If there is, more than likely your images may not turn out as expected.
