You may have seen some of the beautiful photographs of sky objects that have been taken over the years by contributors to SPACE.com . Perhaps you've even wondered whether it might be possible for you to take photos of the night sky. The answer is most definitely "yes." In fact, making the transition from normal photography to astrophotography is relatively easy. Astrophotography is a special adaptation of ordinary photography. You can make some interesting photographs of stars even with inexpensive equipment. The basics A fixed 35 mm camera should be mounted on a sturdy tripod to hold it rock steady. Try also to use a tripod with a three-way pan head. This makes it easier to aim your camera and frame the desired field. The camera must have a "B" or "T" setting, to allow the shutter to remain open for as long as you want. Many automatic cameras can't do this. You'll need a cable release to allow tripping the shutter and locking it open without physically touching the shutter button, which can cause vibration. Don't try to hold the shutter button down with your finger - jiggling of the camera is almost inevitable.

My father and I went to Aruba in March, 1986 to see Halley's Comet. I wanted to record the event so I bought my first camera, a couple of lenses, a hand operated pan/tilt head, and a small finder scope. The camera and the finder scope were mounted on the pan/tilt head and, by turning a small knob on the pan/tilt head, I could track the motion of the stars (and the comet). It was somewhat painstakinga four-minute exposure was very hard on my neck and back! But I got some decent shots: Coming soon... After returning from Aruba I took a few more photos of Halley's Comet from Pennsylvania and Virginia: Coming soon... Once the comet was gone for another 75 years, I turned my attention to other heavenly bodies: Coming soon... Back to the photo page

Venus will remain visible in the evening sky for the rest of the month, but Jupiter will continue to get lower in the sky, disappearing by the end of the month. Mars doubles in brightness this month as is continues to get closer to Earth. Starting the month at 10:30pm it will rise earlier each night. Later in the evening is best for excellent telescopic viewing. Saturn rises a few hours before sunrise and will be near M44 (Beehive Cluster) all month. Mercury will be right next to the (waning) crescent moon on September 2nd about one hour prior to sunrise.

Limitations III. Camera IV. Film V. Aperture VI. Focal Settings VII. Techniques VIII. Bracketing IX. Photo Development X. Conclusion Introduction Limitations It seems like the magnitude limit for photographing objects in the sky with a tripod and camera is somewhere around 4 or 5. Beyond this, you can't keep star trails from occurring before you can collect enough light information. However, this limit can still provide for some great shots. I have found that the following has worked quite well. Camera Film For objects like comets, starclouds and bright planets, Fuji SG 800 or Kodak RG 1000 both fit the bill. I don't have a preference between the two. They are both good films. It seems that the RG 1000 gives a little truer to color presentation of the background, while Fuji seems a little more yellow. These films are also good for dramatic star trails with a brightly lit foreground. For Moon shots and long exposure star trails, you might try either Fuji Super HG 100/200 or Kodak RG 100/200. I have used the Fuji 100 for the Moon shots below (images forthcoming) and had great success. For shorter star trails, you also can use a 400 ASA film.
