Comets travel in highly elliptical orbits around the Sun that take them from beyond the orbit of Pluto to close solar passes. As a comet approaches the Sun, its ices sublime into space, giving off a trailing stream of gas and dust. The following images are of two comets seen in 1996 and 1997. Birdman
to the Stars!
In 1997 Comet Hale-Bopp prompted me to turn an eye skyward once again. Photography has alway been a nurturning and soothing thing, even when I was earning a living at it. On Sunday, January 19, 1997 I bought a C90 at the Santa Barbara Swap Meet. My first telescope in 20+ years! I quickly bought a T-adapter and began shooting the Moon. I thought the planets and deep sky stuff would be a piece of cake - WRONG Join me as I crawl, stumble, and walk among the stars, tripping on my cable release, putting up with bad weather, dead batteries and the heart-break of dew.
Images 2001
Bad weather and lack of time has resulted in very little astrophoto work this year. However, images are being added as late as July, 2001. Leonids Meteor Shower . November 17/18, 2001. Finally the predicitions come through. A great meteor shower that kept you turning 360 degrees all night to catch every meteor. Viewed from Figueroa Moutain in Santa Barbara, California. Missile-Shield Test Launch, Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA . July 14, 2001. The controversial "Star Wars" idea continues. Today's launch was delayed when protesters landed on a beach near the launch site. The dummy warhead was launched to the rescheduled time. Total Solar Eclipse - Africa . June 21, 2001. Chirundu, Zimbabwe. Views roughly 80 miles from the center line in northern Zimbabwe.
