HOW TO ADAPT A GRAYSCALE QUICKCAM FOR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY ?
In order to adapt a (Connectix) Logitech grayscale QuickCam for astrophotography it is adviseable to disassemble the camera-head, carefully removing the objective lens and the IR-blocking filter. Then, just mount the remaining components (basically a printed circuit that contains the CCD chip) so that the modified camera can be easily adapted to the prime focus of a given telescope (for instance, through a 1-1/4" eyepiece adaptor) . An excellent page with detailed instructions for disassembling a grayscale QuickCam was found here , but apparently it is no longer available. One of the best places to get all the information needed is now perhaps the Astrocam web-page (in French) . Also take a look at this link for a list of sites describing QuickCams adapted for astronomy. See also Pedro Ré's web page, another Portuguese amateur that uses QuickCams.

For over 30 years, Midlands Astronomy Club, Inc. (MAC) has existed to further the general knowledge of Astronomy in the Columbia, SC area. This continuing goal is shared by our members, representing many walks of life. Our members have a great range of expertise, from beginner to advanced, with a few professionals. You could say that we are definitely a group of enthusiastic amateurs. No matter what degree of experience in Astronomy you have, I know that the members will welcome you, and be glad to share their knowledge, and share your knowledge. Our bylaws detail the goals of MAC, but simply stated, they are to educate persons interested in Astronomy. The forum for this education is fostered by the atmosphere of fellowship provided at monthly MAC meetings and observing sessions. We have two types of meetings. Our indoor, or Business Meeting , is held the first Thursday of every month, beginning at 7:30 p.m., in the Jones Physical Science Building University of South Carolina Columbia campus, at Main and Greene Street. Our newsletter will advise of any changes in date or location. The meeting includes some club business (usually a small part of the meeting), a report of astronomical events (which includes a report on previous observing sessions and information too recent to be in the monthly publications), and featured speakers (with topics suggested by the membership). Three times each year (Spring, Summer, and Fall) MAC has an

Welcome to Astronomy For Beginners ! As I was getting into astronomy I found it difficult trawling through all the virtually infinite amount of information on the internet, so I've tried to bring together what I've managed to learn here. Information about what sort of equipment to buy, what to look for in a telescope, and where to point the thing once you've got it! Theres also other useful stuff about astronomy in general, and some handy links to other useful pages. If you're interested in astrophotography you can have a look at the pictures I've taken, upload your own , and learn how to do it in the astrophotography section. Have a look at the brand new telescope reviews section- if you've got a telescope, tell everyone what you think about it by submitting a review

    http://www.bigfattail.com/mallastro/
I had been a bit of an amateur astronomer when I was in high school (1970's) and then, while at the University of Virginia studying Astronomy and Physics, had pretty much free use of a 26" Clark refractor and a 40" SCT during midnight shift, since they were mostly used for astrometry. When, after 15 years without one, I decided recently to buy a telescope to mess around with I was a little floored to find not only did things like a 16" LX-200 exist, but that people who really weren't very serious seemed to have no problem plunking down thousands of dollars for gear in that class. Some of the questions that I see in sci.astro.amateur by owners and potential owners of these monsters astound me. I guess it's really no skin off my nose, though, so I shouldn't be bothered... Anyway, this sort of took all of the fun out of, say, trying to get a good image of Jupiter or M31, since all I really had to do was spend a bunch of money. The result was that I ended up buying a Meade ETX-90/EC at a local mall and the quest has become to try to get the best images that I can with this particular little scope. With this attitude, the QuickCam seemed like an obvious choice, particularly since I already had one gathering dust.

Contents: INTRODUCTION This article is mainly for those who have only a small telescope, and is intended to show you just what can be done with such an instrument. Even if you also have a larger instrument it is good to know what your old observing buddy can do since its portability will likely allow you to take it along when you travel. Besides, using a small telescope is just plain fun! All photos shown here were taken with a 4" aperture or smaller instrument. We will cover the full spectrum of available subjects, from terrestrial and lunar to planets and deep-sky objects. As will be seen, small telescopes are capable of producing good photos of deep-sky objects, even at relatively large image scales, with today's fast color films. Since finances may be a factor for many, a minimum of accessory equipment will be stressed for each application.

    Space Station Astrophotography
Astronauts onboard the International Space Station are capturing some amazing photos of the night sky.
Listen to this story via streaming audio , a downloadable file , or get help March 24, 2003: It's a weird place for an astronomer. Meteors fly underfoot. Auroras appear just inches in front of your nose. City lights twinkle, but stars don't. Astronaut Don Pettit loves every minute of it. "There's always something good to see out the window of the space station," says Pettit, who happens to be an amateur astronomer as well as the science officer of the International Space Station (ISS). Right : Astronaut Don Pettit, Expedition Six ISS science officer, takes pictures of Earth through a window in the Destiny laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). [ more "Lately we've been having some extraordinary auroras," he reports. "They meander like big green amoebas crawling across the sky. Sometimes there is a faint touch of red layered above the green. These lights are constantly changing. They swirl. Bright spots come and go. Green blobs transform into upward-directed rays topped by red feathery structures." Long before he went to live onboard the space station, Pettit was an avid aurora watcher. "I've taken photos of the Northern Lights from Alaska and Canada," he says. Some of those displays were magnificent, but "the view from station is even better."
