Lucis Image Processing Software, an easy, fundamentally new way to view image content Images often contain hundreds to tens of thousands of contrast levels. Our eyes can only differentiate 32 levels of contrast. Therefore fine contrast variations are only partially recognized as textures our eyes can't resolve. Lucis makes visible the fine contrast variations (details) you would like to see. Using two cursors (sliders) in Preview Mode, select the range of contrast variances to view. Lucis compares each pixel to every other pixel along hundreds of radial lines in two directions to map out contrast variances. Contrast variances within the selected range are enhanced and contrast variances outside the range are diminished. The relative emphasis of contrast information is shifted, but information is not thrown away. Lucis reveals detail that other image-processing methods can’t. Lucis reveals detail throughout the image, in both the bright and dark areas. Dinoflagellate images courtesy of Prof. Brian Matsumoto, U.

  • Fitsblink - a program for FITS image display, blinking, extraction of star lists and astrometry. It runs on Linux and OS/2 operating systems and should be easy to compile on other UNIX-like systems. It runs both in graphical interactive mode and as a command line program suitable for batch programming. From version 3.0 on it connects to to show asteroid positions and identifies asteroids which are already in the database. is an Internet service which provides information about asteroids. It uses the Lowell asteroid database with almost 50000 asteroids. For connection to the database a number of clients are provided together with source code in different computer languages. Fitsjd is a small utility program which calculates the Julian Day of midexposure time and writes it, together with WCS coordinates and image dimensions, to the standard output. Useful for batch programming. and fitsfrompg are programs which transfer information from FITS header to a Postgres database and retrieve the information from it. Although very simple, these programs can be of great help when searching for old images. Calculation and statistical evaluation of residuals , a WWW service for asteroid astrometrists.

The Highlands Stargazers Astronomy Group is an observing group of dedicated amateur astronomers in Central Florida's Highlands County. Highlands County is about 80 miles south of Orlando in a mostly agricultural area with great dark skies. The group was founded in 1989 by Richard Lindblom. Members of our group participate in many projects to gather valuable scientific data through observational programs which are better suited to amateur astronomers than professionals. We have made significant contributions in the areas of variable star observing, lunar crater timings, stellar occultations and grazing occultations. We also host Star Parties for the general public on a regular basis and during times of special astronomical events such as eclipses and meteor showers, and the unexpected appearance of bright comets, like Comets Hyakutake and Hale-Bopp. We especially enjoy hosting Star Parties for young people, and have participated in summer science camps for school children. For more information on our group, contact Erica Redmond by e-mail:

Origin 6.0 Software Review
Title: Origin 6.0 Made by: Microcal Software, Inc. Platform: Windows 95/98/NT Category: Scientific data display and analysis Price: Free demo; $595 registered version Screen Shots Origin 6.0 Screen Examples Ordering Info: Click here to order Description: Scientific Data analysis and Graphics. Intuitive and versatile - these are the two platinum qualities of Origin 6.0 - data analysis and presentation software made by Microcal Software, Inc. My experience with Origin comes from using the product on a daily basis for my research work in the field of nonlinear and fiber optics. I quickly realized that the two most important qualities that make Origin distinct from the other data analysis and presentation software are it's beautifully intuitive interface and it's mighty versatility Origin 6.0 provides ease-of-use, power, and speed for technical graphics and data analysis in Windows. You can easily import data or open Excel workbooks directly. 2D and 3D graphs are created quickly and effortlessly with just a single click. Graph elements can be modified by double clicking to get a specialized dialog box. Prominent analysis features include descriptive statistics, differentiation, integration, filtering, FFT, linear and nonlinear curve fitting, and peak finding. Final graphs can be exported as EPS, AI, JPEG, and many other common types. Origin 6.0 is intuitive.

116. Home Planet Release 3.1
Release 3.1 of Home Planet, a comprehensive astronomy / space / satellitetracking package for Home Planet is in the public domain; it is free software.
http://www.fourmilab.ch/homeplanet/
Release 3.1 for Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0
August 19th, 2002
High resolution (8192×4096), natural colour,
cloudless Earth image upgrade now available
Release 3.1 of Home Planet, a comprehensive astronomy / space / satellite-tracking package for Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP and above, is now available; see details at the end on how to download and install the software. Release 3.1 of Home Planet is a native 32-bit Windows application which cannot be used on Windows 3.1; if you have such a system, download Home Planet Release 2 , which remains available. The basic functionality of Home Planet remains the same; the changes between Release 2 and 3.1 are those required to conform to the 32-bit Windows application programming interface, to exploit new features in 32-bit Windows (primarily the time zone configuration), and to adjust for changes in the user interface (notably, the replacement of minimised application icons with the taskbar). Home Planet now looks and behaves like a 32-bit Windows application, and some aspects of the program will run faster due to more efficient addressing of large blocks of data such as the star maps and planetary position coefficient tables. Release 3.1 is a minor update to 1997's Release 3 which fixes a couple of cosmetic year 2000 problems, incorporates a work-around for a problem in Windows 98 displaying large images on true-colour (24 or more bits per pixel) displays, and updates the help file to compensate for a Microsoft torpedo in Windows 98 which refused to display it on some systems claiming it was in an "unknown language".

I got my first telescope in the summer of '97. It is a used Celestron 8" SCT. I have been very happy with it while I was using it in Arizona. I belonged to the Saguaro Astronomy Club in Phoenix and found many experienced observers there. I love the clear skies of Arizona. I recently moved to New Jersey and have not yet hooked up with a club here. I am in the Cherry Hill area. If you know a good local club or just some nearby dark skies, drop me a line and let me know.

Astronomy Software on the Internet
by Rob McIntyre
Contents
There is now so many software programs available that I have split the listing into several sections:
  • Go to Titles for Windows, MacOS and Unix software, Go to Satellite for Satellite Tracking software, Go to Palm for Palm, Pocket, or Handhelds software. Go to Missing in Action for Titles that I can not find Web Support.
Introduction
When I first purchased astronomy planetarium software and found that it covered the time span for several thousand years either side of now, it seemed that this would be the only program I would ever need. That was not quite correct. Since then I have looked at (and used) several different programs that all have excellent features that I had never envisaged. But astronomy observational information is not static, and is now being updated faster than ever. With the advent of the Internet, this information is now available and in a format that computer software can immediately use. Here we discuss some of the many programs available and where and how to keep them current. There are two ways that software companies update; the first is to only issue major version upgrades (i.e. TheSky, Redshift), and the second is to also issue minor upgrades (i.e. Guide, Skymap). Companies using the second method respond quicker to suggestions and new events, for example release of RealSky Data. Upgrades of Comet and Asteroid data are handled either by downloading a complete current list from the source, or editing data files to input single elements.

Extension to 3D using the spherical product. Software The following shows the interface developed to explore 3D supershapes. It is based upon X-Windows and OpenGL and as such is interactive. It is currently available for Mac OS-X (as a UNIX application) and Linux upon payment of a US$30 shareware fee. Use of the program is straightforward, edit fields and hit return. The left mouse button rotates the model in two axes, the middle mouse button rotates about the third axis. The right mouse button brings up a menu. A limited version of the program can be downloaded free. In the case of the Mac OS-X version it is necessary to have X11 running. In both cases it is expected OpenGL capable graphics card and drivers are installed. These versions also allow you to check the software works on your platform before getting the full version. supershape_mac.zip
