Click here to go back to Doug's home page. This page summarizes the reseach I've done in Astronomy. Click here to see my Curriculum Vitae. Note: I haven't updated this since June 1996. Want to see the latest version of the guide to creating slit masks for the Double Imaging Spectrograph at Apache Point Observatory ? I'll update it as I discover any new information. I graduated from Denton High School (in Texas) in 1986 and entered the University of Texas at Austin . For my first two years there, I majored in both Computer Science and Astronomy. After two years of programming classes, though, I decided that since my eventual goal is to teach and do research rather than work in industry, I'd rather do something I enjoy. I enjoy Astronomy more, though I still program a fair bit. I'm fluent in Fortran, Pascal, Assembly Language, Modula-2, and C. I taught myself C, and I am always writing programs in C to help my data reduction and so forth. As an undergraduate in the UT-Austin Department of Astronomy , I worked with Paul Hemenway, a member of the UT-Austin contingent of the HST Astrometry Science Team , on modeling minor planet light curves and several iterations of HST proposals and with Art Whipple on a paper on the statistics of minor planet orbits.

Undergraduate Research (see also the Graduate Program Page)
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at NAU is home to active research programs in surface physics and astrophysics. Many opportunities for original research exist for undergraduates through the NASA Space Grant , the National Undergraduate Research Observatory (NURO) REU (Research Experiences for Undergrads) and as a part of the degree programs offered in physics and astronomy. Students work in partnership with faculty and are often published in scientific journals.
The facilities for use in the surface physics and astrophysics research programs include:
  • Scanning tunneling microscope
  • Atomic force microscope
  • X-ray photoelectron spectrometer
  • Research grade ellipsometer
  • Instrumentation for low energy electron diffraction
  • 31-inch telescope at nearby Lowell Observatory
  • 24-inch telescope at the Atmospheric Research Observatory on the NAU campus.
Some of the research topics sponsored by the NASA Space Grant for the 1997-98 school year include:
  • Infrared spectra of embedded luminous stars
  • Heterogeneous reactions on water ice films at stratospheric temperatures
  • The composition of Titan's troposphere
  • P.I.E. (Probing for Ice on Europa)

    INDEX
    Introduction
The Joint Australian Centre for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica , JACARA, has been constituted to facilitate Australian participation in the development of Antarctic astronomy. It has joint nodes at the School of Physics in the University of New South Wales, and at Mount Stromlo and Siding Springs Observatories in the Australian National University. JACARA receives advice from the Australian Working Group for Antarctic Astronomy . This group was created by the National Committee for Astronomy in order to study the scientific potential of the Antarctic Plateau for astronomy. JACARA works closely with CARA, the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica . CARA is a consortium of US universities run from Yerkes Observatory of the University of Chicago. JACARA are promoting activities, both nationally and internationally, that will facilitate our ability to operate an Antarctic Observatory and maximise the science that can be produced. Currently the major focus is on site testing to quantify the limitations to astronomical observations across the spectrum and determine the optimum site for an international observatory. Of special interest is the development of an
