research done about low mass black holes. On the level of 2nd year astronomy students.
http://www.mso.anu.edu.au/~westra/aoz/
In our second year we have to carry out a project about a subject in astronomy. This year we chose for black holes . Now we had to think of a main question, which has become:
Do black holes exist in our Universe?
To answer this question we divided the question into subquestions. My subquestion is:
How can stars evolve into black holes?
This question is very important to answer the main question, because the current theories say that IF black holes are created there are three different sizes:
  • very low mass black holes: about 10 to 10 M sun
  • low mass black holes: about 10 to 10 M sun
  • heavy mass black holes: about 10 to 10 M sun
If there should be low mass black holes you should think that they have a progenitor of the massrange of a star. Of which kind of an object do you think of when you have an object in the massrange of a star? On the ground of the mass of a black hole you can assume that stars can evolve into low mass black holes.
The other two categories will be explained by colleagues of mine. They think that very low mass black holes originate from primordial black holes. About high mass black holes, which will be in the center of galaxies, they have different theories.
The subquestion is subsequently devided into four subquestions.

102.   Oxide Physics Research
The programme is a collaboration of experimental and theoretical physicists working on the behaviour of correlated electrons in oxide materials. Based in the School of Physics and astronomy at Birmingham University, United Kingdom. Materials of interest include the high temperature cuprate superconductors, nonFermi liquid physics near quantum critical points, unconventional superconductivity in the ruthanates and heavy fermion behaviour in lithium vanadate.

Introduction Welcome to the web pages of the Oxide Research Programme. The research programme is a collaborative effort between experimental and theoretical physicists, together with material scientists, with the common goal of understanding of the behaviour of correlated electrons in oxide materials. The work is distributed across the collaborating institutions: at the University of St Andrews (School of Physics and Astronomy), at the University of Birmingham (in the School of Physics and Astronomy and also the School of Chemistry) and in the Low Temperature Physics group at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge. We also work with a number of international collaborations. The experimental work is headed by Professor Andy Mackenzie (St Andrews) and the theoretical work by Professor Andy Schofield (Birmingham). What are correlated electrons?

Supernovae are the violent explosions of stars that are responsible for producing all of the "heavy" material (anything other than hydrogen and helium) in the Universe. For a brief time, their brightness approaches that of an entire galaxy. White dwarf stars can become supernovae if they accrete matter from a binary partner and approach the Chandrasekhar limit; this type of supernova leaves no remnant at all. Massive stars end their lives by having their cores collapse to form neutron stars or black holes, while blowing off their outer layers. Anglo-Australian Observatory , shows the same portion of the sky before and after the supernova exploded. A larger version of this image is available from the AAO or by clicking on the image above. The background image is courtesy of The Supernova Nexus at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The Supernovae Research Group of the University of Texas Astronomy Program is conducting research, both theoretical and observational, in order to better understand these events.

About Clive Ruggles
My out-of-the-ordinary career development at the University of Leicester began in 1982, when I arrived on a SERC (Science and Engineering Research Council, as it then was) Research Fellowship in science-based archaeology, to work in the statistics section of the Mathematics Department. By then I had already switched disciplines from astrophysics to archaeology to become University of Wales Research Fellow in the Department of Archaeology at Cardiff. A major field project undertaken in western Scotland at this time culminated in the publication of my first single-authored book, Megalithic Astronomy: a New Archaeological and Statistical Study of 300 Western Scottish Sites , in 1984.

mainly administrative information. Each department has a number of thriving research groups and there are also many groups that cross departmental and School boundaries. For example, the Space Science Centre involves both Engineering and Physics astronomy; the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience and Robotics involves researchers in the Schools of Life Sciences and Science and Technology. The School has many working links with outside agencies, notably American Express and Rolls Royce to name but two.

It provides a lively and stimulating academic community and brings together a broad and exciting range of academic interests many of which cut across traditional academic disciplines. They stretch, for example, from the study of children using innovative computing interfaces to nanotechnology, and from coding theory to engineering and product design.
The new Centre for Research in Cognitive Science maintains the University's excellent reputation in research areas previously pursued in the School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences (COGS) and, although based in the School of Science and Technology, is a multi-School research group."

Here you will find articles on how astrophysical objects work and on current research efforts to more completely understand the universe. This web site is written for the reader who has some understanding of basic physics, but who is not familiar with the varied phenomena found in our universe. The basic layout of the site is as survey paths, which can be found under the Surveys link at the top of this and most other pages on this site. Each survey begins with a basic overview of the subject. Part of this overview include simulators of astrophysical phenomena that allow the reader to experiment with the phenomena. The later pages in a survey present the subject in greater and more mathematical depth. A path ends with research pages that describe current research projects and results in astrophysics. The links at the top of each page are Home , which is the current home page of this site, Commentary , which is an index of short essays on topics loosely related to astrophysics, Surveys , which is the index of survey paths, Research , which is the index of research pages and the page leading to recent news items, Background , which is the index page for all background information on astrophysics, including survey pages, simulator pages, tables, bibliographic references, and lists of web resources, Previously , which is an index of previous home pages, and
