Who and What is the ADIL?
The purpose of the Astronomy Digital Image Library (ADIL) is to collect astronomical, research-quality images and make them available to the astronomical community and the general public. Patrons access the Library through the World Wide Web to search for and browse images. Once images are located in the Library, users may download them to their local machines in FITS format for further analysis. The Library provides a number of benefits not only to those looking for images, but also to those who add images to the Library's growing collection. For more on what the ADIL is all about, check the introduction to the ADIL User's Guide The Library is being developed and maintained by the Radio Astronomy Imaging Group at the National Center for Supercomputing Application (NCSA) on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) . Support has come from:

UCSC is one of the world's leading centers for both observational and theoretical research in astronomy and astrophysics. The department includes twenty-two faculty members, whose research interests range from the Solar System and the Milky Way to the most distant galaxies in the Universe and the most fundamental questions of cosmology. There are typically over a dozen postdoctoral researchers in residence, as well as a dedicated and skilled technical staff and a steady stream of visiting scientists. The UCSC department was recently ranked first in the country in research impact, based on citation studies. UCSC is also a leader in astrophysics education. The department currently enrolls about twenty-five students working towards the Ph.D. degree. Graduate students benefit from the low student-faculty ratio in the department and extensive research opportunities, as well as course offerings that cover both theoretical and observational aspects of astronomy. UCSC alumni hold positions at leading universities and research institutes around the world. The department offers an undergraduate minor in Astrophysics, and collaborates with the Physics department to offer an undergraduate major in Astrophysics.

Physics has a number of strong research programmes. These are productive with many refereed papers produced each year. Research Areas Laser Scattering LASER SCATTERING There is over 20 years experience in the theory and application of laser scattering to non-destructive measurement with special emphasis on properties of individual microparticles and living cells. More recent is an interest in biological applications of light scattering and optical trapping. There is also development and consultancy work on various aspects of optical monitoring and measurement. The major research projects are: Scattering of Light from Microparticles: this has led to the development of several aerosol monitors designed to count, size and classify particles according to their shape, and a laser diffractometer for determining the size, internal structure, refractive index and its distribution in cells and microparticles. Ongoing projects include particle and cell sorting based on laser scattering, a study of water relations in bacterial spores and particle analysis by laser-acoustic Doppler scattering. Theory of Light Scattering: this includes both the direct and the inverse scattering problems for particles of various geometry's (i.e. obtaining the properties of the scattered light from the properties of the object which scattered it and

Comet Tempel 1: Scientists measure how deep "Deep Impact" was, with X-rays
The XRA Group has a distinguished record in high-energy astrophysics, having played a leading role in X-ray observatories such as Ariel-V, Exosat, Ginga and Rosat, now continued with Chandra and XMM-Newton. Although an emphasis on X-ray astronomy remains, the research programme now makes use of the full range of ground-based and space-based facilities for multi-wavelength astronomy. Active research interests include: the study of white and brown dwarf stars; stellar coronae; cataclysmic variables; supernova remnants; normal, starburst and active galaxies; clusters of galaxies; deep X-ray surveys; and the cosmic X-ray background radiation. A wealth of X-ray data is now arriving from the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories; both XMM's EPIC and Chandra's HRC cameras were developed here. The Group also provides access to many important data archives via LEDAS and is now participating in the Astrogrid Project, leading towards the "virtual observatory".

Research Experiences for Undergraduates
The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) of the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa expects to offer between six and eight research assistant positions for the summer of 2005. These positions are funded through the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program. This REU program will provide undergraduates who are considering a career in science with the opportunity to engage in research with professional astronomers working on cutting-edge problems in astrophysics. The REU students will be full-time research assistants to a faculty mentor at the Institute and will work on specific aspects of an ongoing research program.
