Program Overview:
NOAO facilities in Tucson, Arizona and on nearby Kitt Peak are used in support of The Use of Astronomy in Research Based Science Education (RBSE) , a Teacher Enhancement Program that was funded through the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Education and Human Resources. The RBSE program has grown into the new Teacher Leaders in Research Based Science Education (TLRBSE) program. The TL/RBSE programs offer the research experience to middle and high school teachers. Within the engaging context of astronomy, TL/RBSE participants experience how science is practiced and develop strategies for undertaking real astronomy research with their students. The research experience then extends to the classroom so that the students can participate in the RBSE research projects currently ongoing at Kitt Peak. Astronomer Don McCarthy instructs RBSE '99 participants on solar astronomy.

Kate Barnes' Stellar Work on Astronomy Research Project
Kate Barnes' fascination with the celestial realm began with her high school's astronomy club, when she helped teach fourth graders about constellations. Barnes has been working on the research project for almost two years, aiding the college's Dr. Jacquelynne Milingo, a visiting assistant professor of physics and astronomy. "It has been very rewarding working with Kate," Milingo said. "Our first observing run together seemed to catch her curiosity, and since, she has worked tirelessly learning how to deal with this unique brand of data." The student-professor research team has been collecting raw telescope images and turning that into spectra - making the chemical composition of stars determinable. After the project is completed, Barnes will present a research paper that summarizes the actual atomic processes that occur in planetary nebulae - the gaseous envelopes around dying stars in the last stage of stellar evolution, like our sun. The project is significant because it will allow planetary nebulae theorists to speculate the chemical evolution of galaxies. The American Astronomical Society (AAS) deemed it important enough to be deserving of a grant, funded by NASA, and awarded to Milingo in the fall of 2004.

Faculty in the department are active in many areas of astronomical and astrophysical research:
  • Dr. Lyle Ford studies the rotation properties of asteroids using observations from Hobbs Observatory. He has also investigated the spectra of gamma-ray bursts. Dr. Lauren Likkel is involved with near-infrared spectroscopy of planetary nebulae and studies of millimeter emission from molecules in circumstellar envelopes. Dr. Nathan Miller uses data from the NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the ESA's XMM-Newton satellite to understand the powerful winds of hot stars. He is developing spectroscopic monitoring program for emission-line B stars using Hobbs observatory. Dr. George Stecher makes photometric observations of asteroids and eclipsing binary stars using Hobbs Observatory's 24" telescope. Dr. Paul Thomas creates computer models of solar system phenomena. His research and some of his students projects can be seen on the UWEC Planetary Science page

Utrecht University research projects in astronomy, M.Sc. Astrophysics research projects, and Astrovaria projects must be supervised by an SIU staff member (A. Achterberg, R. Hammerschlag, C. Keller, H. Lamers, S. Larsen, N. Langer, O. Pols, R. Rutten, F. Verbunt, J. Vink) or by an external staff member involved in Utrecht University astronomy education (at SRON Utrecht : J. Bleeker, J. Heise, P. Hoyng, J. Kaastra, M. Mendez, J. in 't Zand; at FOM Rijnhuizen : R. Keppens). Their colleagues, postdocs and PhD students may share in the supervision under their responsibility. Student research may also be undertaken outside Utrecht under the responsibility of one of the above as co-superviser. research projects are 15 ects (10 weeks = 1 "periode" = 0.5 semester full-time).
M.Sc. Astrophysics research projects are 60 ects (one year full-time).
Astrovaria projects are 7.5 ects (5 weeks full-time). The selection of a supervisor, the definition of a research project, and its scheduling are a matter of negotiation between student and potential supervisor. This is a free market mechanism in which the student should take the initiative. Find out who is doing what, identify research topics and supervisors that suit you, and then enter into negotiation with the appriopriate staff member.

The Institute of Astronomy: Past and Present
The Institute of Astronomy is a Department of the University, concerned primarily with postgraduate teaching and research. Its activities are also generously supported by external bodies, particularly the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC, formerly SERC), and the external funds which support many overseas astronomers make it an international research centre as well. The Institute of Astronomy offers an undergraduate course Natural Sciences Tripos, Part II (Options A and B) in Astrophysics for third year students from the Natural Sciences or Mathematical Triposes. The Institute is also one of the largest centres for astronomical research in the UK, comprising about 170 academic, postdoctoral and assistant staff, research students and seminar visitors from many countries. Observational studies are conducted on a variety of objects, from individual stars to clusters of galaxies, at a range of wavelengths, from the infra-red to high energy X-rays. The Institute also houses an active instrument development group. Theoretical work involves analytical studies on all scales, from the formation of stars and their subsequent evolution to the formation of large clusters of galaxies. Computational work is also carried out, including modelling the evolution of clusters of stars, computational hydrodynamic calculations of stellar collisions and processes related to star formation.

Experimental research is conducted both on-campus in condensed matter laboratories and computational facilities, and off-campus at major national and international laboratories.
Off-campus laboratories where USC professors are conducting experiments include Fermilab near Chicago, Thomas Jefferson Laboratory in Virginia, Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory in California, CERN in Switzerland, and within the Gran Sasso mountain in Italy.
