ASTRONOMICAL RESEARCH AT ETSU
East Tennessee State University is part of the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy , which operates a 0.9 meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. This telescope, along with the 14-inch telescope at the Harry D. Powell Observatory near the ETSU campus, is used for astronomical research by the faculty and students of ETSU. In addition to these two telescopes, ETSU astronomers also use a wide variety of other telescopes, including the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) , the telescopes of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory , the Hubble Space Telescope , the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer , and the International Ultraviolet Explorer . ETSU Astronomers are also involved in theoretical projects on a wide range of topics, including the intergalactic medium, stellar atmospheres, and hot stars.     Overview
    Rutgers astronomers pursue some of the most exciting questions in physics today through active observational and theoretical programs. Projects include searches for the nature and distribution of dark matter, attempts to determine the expansion rate and density of the universe, the origin, evolution, and nature of large galaxy clusters, the formation and evolution of galaxies, and the formation of the elements in supernovae. Objects of study range from "nearby" globular star clusters in our own Galaxy to the most remote galaxies and quasars whose light paths are distorted by the gravitational lensing effect of mass concentrations along the line of sight. Observers and theorists in the group interact closely, and many recent student theses result from both theoretical and observational projects. The Southern African Large Telescope ( SALT ) is one of the principal research facilities for the astronomy group at Rutgers. They have a 10% share of the observing time on this 11-meter optical telescope, the largest in the world, which began operations in mid-2005. The University is a founding partner of the consortium that built the telescope, and Rutgers astronomers have contributed to its design and instrumentation. SALT offers Rutgers astronomers the opportunity to make cutting-edge observations of the cosmos through access to a world-class instrument. Rutgers is also a partner in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope , a 6-meter microwave telescope located high in the Chilean Andes which becomes operational in 2006. Its measurements of the cosmic background radiation - the faint glow from the Big Bang - will tell us more of the origin and evolution of the universe.     Dr. Fortson's research work is conducted as a member of the VERITAS Collaboration Geza Gyuk, Ph.D.
    Dr. Gyuk is interested in Cosmology and the structure of our galaxy. He is particularly interested in the galactic halos and the dark matter of which they consist. He is a member of MEGA, a worldwide collaboration to probe the halo of the Andromeda Galaxy using Gravitational Microlensing, a technique that uses the effect of gravity on light to study dark matter. Dr. Gyuk's responsibility as head of the Astronomy Department is to manage the staff astronomers and work with the other Adler department heads to bring accurate, appropriate, up-to-date content into all of Adler's programs and projects. Larry Ciupik, M.S. Thirty-one-year Adler veteran Larry Ciupik rejoined the Astronomy Department in November, 2002. He brings extensive sky show production experience, writing skills, and gifted high school and college teaching experience to the department. Along with writing articles for the members' newsletter, the Adler Star, the Adler web site, and Cyberspace Far Out Friday telescope viewing. Ciupik's special interests include: forensic astronomy, teaching astronomy to non-science majors, observational astronomy, and supernovae.

    There are around fifty active astronomical researchers at ROE, as well as large numbers of programmers, engineers, and technicians. The total number of people on site is about 150.  IfA and ATC staff share a single canteen, library, computer network , seminar and coffee-talk series, so the effect is of a single large research institute. Research-active staff can be grouped as follows:
    • Ten teaching staff in IfA (Peter Brand, John Cooke, Jim Dunlop, Alan Heavens, Andy Lawrence, Avery Meiksin, John Peacock, Andy Taylor,  Ignas Snellen, Makoto Kishimoto).  Staff elsewhere in the University who undertake astronomical research (Douglas Heggie and Max Ruffert, Maths; Phil Woods, Physics).  Seven PPARC or Royal Society research fellows (David Bacon, Philip Best, Michael Brown, Marek Kukula, Will Percival, Adrian Webster, Ray Wolstencroft), plus one joint with physics (Arjun Berera).  Six PPARC rolling grant or EU funded PDRAs (Patricia Castro, Ross McLure, Stephanie Phleps, Nathan Roche, Susan Scott, Eric Tittley)   Project funded staff who have a substantial fraction of time available for personal research (Nigel Hambly, Bob Mann, Mike Hawkins, Peredur Williams)

    Star Formation
    There are two main thrusts of star formation research at Cardiff: Numerical simulations of star formation, with an emphasis on the early stages of star formation and star formation in agitated environments; and observations of the earliest stages of protostellar collapse and pre-stellar evolution using ground-based mm/submm telescopes and space-based far-infrared telescopes.
    Chemical Evolution of Galaxies
    • Determination of chemical abundances from spectra of HII regions and stars Theoretical studies of the chemical evolution of galaxies, and the effects of gas flows. Time evolution of chemical abundances in the universe, including QSO absorption spectra. Primordial abundances, and evolution of abundances of deuterium and helium Molecules and dust in galaxies.
    Observational Cosmology
    Our main research goals are to understand the histories of galaxies and large-scale structure.

    Printable version Email this page Suggest a link for this page How to bookmark a page THE PARTICLE PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY COUNCIL (PPARC) furthers fundamental understanding of the universe. PPARC directs and co-ordinates the funding of research in national and international programmes in particle physics, astronomy, cosmology and space science. It delivers world class science, technology, and people and supports research in three main areas: astronomy, particle physics and planetary science. Astronomy, which includes astrophysics and cosmology, studies the origin and evolution of the universe and galaxies, and the life cycle and properties of the stars. Particle physics covers theoretical and experimental research into elementary particles and the forces of nature. Planetary science, which includes solar terrestrial physics, studies the origin and evolution of the solar system and the influence of the sun on planetary bodies, particularly Earth. Support is channelled by the provision of facilities on a national or international basis, funding of research or training at universities by research grants and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studentships, postdoctoral, advanced and senior fellowships.

    Recommenders: Suggestions for writing a letter

    Thank you for agreeing to write a letter of support for one of your students who is applying for participation in an NSF-REU program in astronomy next summer. We receive many applications, and the letter of recommendation is typically the most important part of a student's application package. Assuming that you wish to give your student the best possible chance of success, we have put together some suggestions for writing letters of reference. You can assume that we have the academic record of the student available to us, so there is no need to repeat that information. Please describe your relationship with the student , i.e. whether you have taught them in class, in private study, in the laboratory or through a research project. We would value information from you on how quickly they learn, how motivated they are, whether they can seek and take advice from peers and mentors, their written and verbal communication skills, their level of independence, how well they work in a group, and the extent to which you think they can grow professionally by involvement in an REU program. Another thing that you should know is that the applications are processed over a very short time period, and thus receiving the letter by the due date is essential.

    Introduction... There are billions and clouds and clusters of galaxies in the known Universe. All being photographed with deep space telescopes. There are billions and billions of suns in each of the billions of galaxies. And each of the suns is smaller, similar, the same, or bigger than our own sun. More and more planets are being found around those suns. At the moment with today's technology or techniques we can only see very large planets similar to Jupiter.
