Aims and Means Astronomy is the oldest of all sciences. It is also pluridisciplinar; not only do its most recent developments use all the disciplines of physics, but it also has links with chemistry, biology and the Earth sciences. Furthermore, the cultural and philosophical role of Astronomy is undisputed.

http://www.science-projects.com/Astro/AstronomyBB.htm
www . Science-Projects . com Astronomy Projects for Beginners INTRODUCTION. Of all the scientific studies, astronomy can be the one that is so immediately filled with wonder. It is so enticing! While so many students would like to do projects in astronomy, alas, the vast majority of projects are not easy to do because they require great expense and skill - great observatories, radio-telescopes, space labs. Before continuing with mentioning a few projects that are possible, it might be wise to suggest to you, the student, to ask your teacher which is preferred for a terrific grade:
  • that you go to the library and then make models of, or write a great report about other people's discoveries, or
  • that you write a report or model your own discoveries. This is a double-barrelled suggestion (1) because any great teacher would much prefer you to do some work rather than merely rephrase someone else's finding. With that thought planted in the teacher's mind, you will have a big edge over your classmates because most or all of your classmates will report on other people's work and the teacher think very highly of your work - PROVIDING that you explain it well so that the teacher understands it. (Remember that if you do a project which few or no one else has done before, you cannot expect the teacher to have done it or know about it. YOU must be the explainer; YOU must be the teacher's teacher. (What are the Kuiper Belts of the outer reaches of the solar system? Yes, 'that' Kuiper!)

    NEWS
Comet Tempel 1: Scientists measure how deep "Deep Impact" was, with X-rays
The XRA Group has a distinguished record in high-energy astrophysics, having played a leading role in X-ray observatories such as Ariel-V, Exosat, Ginga and Rosat, now continued with Chandra and XMM-Newton. Although an emphasis on X-ray astronomy remains, the research programme now makes use of the full range of ground-based and space-based facilities for multi-wavelength astronomy. Active research interests include: the study of white and brown dwarf stars; stellar coronae; cataclysmic variables; supernova remnants; normal, starburst and active galaxies; clusters of galaxies; deep X-ray surveys; and the cosmic X-ray background radiation. A wealth of X-ray data is now arriving from the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories; both XMM's EPIC and Chandra's HRC cameras were developed here. The Group also provides access to many important data archives via LEDAS and is now participating in the Astrogrid Project, leading towards the "virtual observatory".

This is our radio astronomy page. At Bathurst Observatory, we have installed a 3 metre radio telescope that is used as an introductory device to learning about radio astronomy for schools and interested groups. We have also installed a radio meteor detector.

The 3 metre dish is operational. The dish will primarily be used for listening for signals coming from hydrogen gas in the milky way and for solar work. It will soon be possible for school groups to undertake a mapping project of our galaxy using this telescope. We are currently writing the educational resources for this instrument for use with school groups over the internet. There are also a number of other uses that we will detail later. We will also add another dish of 6 metres to compliment the 3 metre dish. More on this later. At present, we can use our 3 metre radio telescope for scans of the sun at 4000 MHz. An example of such a scan can be seen below. We have now detected the hydrogen line at 1420 MHz using our 3 metre dish and specially built receiver. More on this work will be posted when we improve the system. We have also mounted the meteor detector inside the 3 dish, to remove ground reflections.

-Ronald Reagan to Mikhail Gorbachev- "In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity. Perhaps we need some outside, universal threat to make us recognize this common bond. I occasionally think, how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world. And yet, I ask is not an alien force ALREADY among us?"
