Discover the universe with FamilyFun by Maggie Megaw
of 4 A few months ago, I accompanied my daughter's third-grade class on a field trip to the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. As the planetarium grew dark, a universe of stars appeared and the kids gasped in amazement. Soon after, a friend and I planned a two-family camping trip to a nearby park to view wildflowers by day and stars by night. But to stargaze with your own kids, you don't have to plan anything as extensive as a camp-out or even a trip to the planetarium. A few hours under the heavens, away from city lights, can be just as rewarding. First, you may want to try an exciting home project that will prepare your children for their first outing to see the stars and the planets. I think you'll find the effort pays off: On the camp-out, we all knew just what celestial bodies to look for and where to find them.

of 4 PROJECT:
Create a comfortable, enjoyable first stargazing experience GOALS:
To help children identify the constellations and enjoy stargazing AGES: 5 AND UP
MATERIALS:
It would be hard to overstate my excitement for our camping and stargazing trip, but harder still to overstate just how wonderful it was for our group to assemble on a grassy hillside on a star-studded night. With the right preparation and a cooperative sky, you can't fail to have a good time. PREPARATIONS:
Before leaving on our camping trip, I learned that we'd be viewing during a new moon (the best time for stargazing because the nights are the darkest). From magazine, I learned that Jupiter would be visible and that it would appear right next to Leo. I made sure both families had enough flashlights and bought red cellophane to screen their light and help maintain our night vision. STEP 1: PICKING THE SPOT
The afternoon before our first expedition, I scouted out a good viewing spot. Since we'd be walking in the dark and with children, I looked for an open space with easy access and no thorny bushes or other dangerous obstacles. Once I found a good spot, I assembled all our paraphernalia and charts, made up a thermos of cocoa, packed cups and cookies, and grabbed pillows, sleeping bags, and a couple of mats.

Hopefully you find something useful, or a least interesting here. In general the content will range from novice to moderate level amateur material. When I was a small boy, I was fascinated by the stars and planets that my brother would show me in his small Edmund telescope. Over the the years my interest in astronomy had faded, but eventually the spark rekindled. Today although space probes and satellites reveal images much sharper and clearer than any I could hope to see with my own modest equipment, I still gaze into the night with the same sense of awe and wonder I had when I was a child.

  • Try drawing a lunar map each night as the phase changes.
  • Study light pollution in your area and the main causes of it.
  • Visit a planetarium.
