Ever since robot spacecraft have been exploring the Jupiter system, one moon has especially captured the interest of astronomers. Although Europa's surface is cold and frozen, there is evidence that, under the ice, it has an ocean of warmer, liquid water. In her talk, Dr. Phillips will explore Europa's geology, focusing on the prospects for water and the possibilities of life in that deep alien ocean. No background in science will be required for this talk, which will interest both fans of astronomy and the search for life.

http://mac01.eps.pitt.edu/harbbook/c_ix/chap09.html
UNIT 9 TALES FROM OTHER WORLDS: THE SOLAR FAMILY Overview The advent of the Space Age has brought about a great advance in knowledge of our neighbors in the solar system. Our studies of the Moon, and the results of the Apollo program in particular, have enabled us to construct a history of the early solar system that is wholly missing on Earth. We will take a tour of the solar system, noting the processes that have shaped each world. In doing so, we will gather the observational evidence upon which rest theories for the origin of the solar system and its evolution that will be developed in the next unit. HM 9-1: The Solar Family (image from NASA, objects are not to scale; the earth's moon has been included and Pluto is not shown). B. EXPLORATION OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM The most stunning sight that is available to every human on this planet must surely be the midnight sky, seen on a clear night far from sources of artificial light. It is not surprising that astronomy was one of the earliest and best developed of sciences. Against the background of the fixed stars, the ancients noted the motion of a number of celestial bodies: the Sun, Moon, and a group of five "stars" that moved about, some so rapidly that they were in a different place each night, and others so slowly that their motion could only be discerned over a period of months. These five objects were called planets , after the Greek word for "wanderer."

Mass and Weight
Before we get into the subject of gravity and how it acts, it's important to understand the difference between weight and mass We often use the terms "mass" and "weight" interchangeably in our daily speech, but to an astronomer or a physicist they are completely different things. The mass of a body is a measure of how much matter it contains. An object with mass has a quality called

The Polynesian Universe Astronomy and Astrology The Polynesians relied upon astronomy to steer their canoes while sailing around the ocean. The sun guided them during the day, but at night the boatmen watched the stars and the planets to be certain of the direction they were sailing. It was therefore necessary for this group of islanders to keep strict records of which stars rose where, and when they were visible in the night sky. Many times, the stars themselves were recorded in the tales of great voyages made by the Polynesians' ancestors. In The Morning Star Rises , the story of Hawaii-loa is expressed. Hawaii-loa, the discoverer of the Polynesian islands, came from a far-away land in search of another place for his people to live. He steered by the stars Makalii (the Pleiades), Iao (Jupiter as a morning star), and Hoku-ula (the Red Star, or Aldebaran). Experts have estimated that the Polynesian islands were settled around the dawn of the Christian era, so the sea-going islanders have been using the stars for at least two thousand years. Using the "pits" along the horizon and the stars that passed through the zenith, the sailors were able to determine their latitude and longitude. The Polynesians knew that the same star would pass through the zenith at all points along the same latitude. When a certain star passed overhead, the sailors knew that they had reached the latitude they wanted. They also memorized the configuration of the constellations, and could predict the motion of the planets along the ecliptic and the motion of the Moon. However, not all of the voyaging was done at the same time each year. Therefore, the Polynesians memorized the brightness, color, and position of several hundred stars, as well as the time of year that the stars were visible. For checking the course during the day, the Polynesians were able to tell the diurnal position of the Sun, as well as its distance north or south of the equator on any day of the year.

space colony
Recommended books
A large, self-contained, artificial environment in space that is the permanent home of an entire community. The first fictional account of a space colony appears in 1869 in Edward Everett Hale ’s novel, The Brick Moon Other early portrayals of the idea are to be found in novels by Jules Verne in 1878 and Kurd Lasswitz in 1897. In the 1920s, J. D. Bernal described spherical colonies that have come to be known as Bernal Spheres . The companion idea of mobile colonies, or generation starships , that could carry large numbers of people relatively slowly to other stars was envisioned in 1918 by Robert Goddard A vastly more ambitious scheme for completely encircling a star with artificial habitats was described by Freeman Dyson Indeed, the development of concepts about space colonies is deeply entwined with evolving notions about the colonization of other worlds

PREDICTABLE ASTRONOMICAL EVENTS
Anyone visiting their local bookstore or public library sees hundreds of books on astronomy. Topics range the full gamut; from asteroids colliding with Earth (e.g., extinction of the dinosaurs) to the possibilities of life on other worlds (e.g., exobiology or the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence; a.k.a. SETI). There are yearly almanacs with tables listing positions of the sun, moon, and planets as well as pictorial table top books showing how the planets and galaxies look through the cameras of deep space probes or the Hubble Telescope. If you need to know how to build a telescope or photograph galaxies, the sources are just a short walk or drive away. It won't be too long when all this information becomes accessible to anyone on their personal computer through the World Wide Web ; for example in just seconds. This book (more like a handbook) is intended to provide a general appreciation for the rarity of planetary, lunar, and solar configurations in the sky. Unlike many books on astronomy, I have attempted to show the rhythm of the planets and their moons and have provided excellent references in each footnote for those seeking more details. The bibliography also suggest additional reading sources for those interested. There are undoubtedly more examples of interesting and unusual celestial alignments which I encourage you to explore with today's astronomy software. The bottom line is that if you are not motivated to take your telescope or binoculars outside one very cold winter's night, maybe you will if you realize that you won't have a second chance to observe a once-in-a-lifetime Predictable Astronomical Event.
