Abstract
Astronomy, with good reason, is thought of as a visual science. Spectacular images of deep space objects or other worlds of our solar system inspire public interest in Astronomy. People encounter news about the universe during their daily life. Developing concepts about celestial objects presents an extra challenge of abstraction for people with visual impairments. The Texas Space Grant Consortium with educators at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired have developed a 2 day workshop to be held in April 2004 to help students with visual impairments understand these concepts. Hands-on activities and experiments will emphasize non-visual senses. For example, students will learn about:
  • Constellations as historical ways of finding one's way across the sky.

Yearbook of Astronomy: 2004 - Edited by Patrick Moore
Complementing The Observer's Year , this is a handy month by month guide to planetary and astronomical events for 2004, and includes topical articles by leading astronomers, sky charts and astronomical events such as eclipses, comets, meteors, nebulae and phases of the moon, plus an extensive range of specially commissioned articles by some of the world's leading astronomers.
The Observer's Year - Patrick Moore
A companion to his "Yearbook of Astronomy" , the book covers the astronomical year on a day to day basis, showing what can be seen in the sky, and what events are happening right up to 2003. There are sky maps to point the way to items of interest, and also hints on observing the planets, anniversary dates, background information on the historical greats in astronomy, plus lots of other useful information and items of interest. This book is ideal for the newcomer to the hobby, guiding them through the astronomical calendar.

Search for Other Worlds
By Armando Caussade.
Uploaded: August 22, 2004. Revised: August 22, 2004.
INTRODUCTION
The recent discovery of extrasolar planets We present a general discussion of this topic, with special emphasis on three specific aspects: detection techniques employed in extrasolar planet searches; the properties of the planetary systems found to date; and the future prospects in the search for other worlds, particularly those which may actually resemble our own Earth.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Meanwhile, van de Kamp, himself director of Sproul Observatory, had been making high resolution photographic plates of Barnard's Star, the second nearest star system to our own, located only 6.0 light years away. He and his students eventually accumulated over 2,000 plates, taken with a large 0.61-meter refracting telescope from 1938 through 1962. His results appeared to show a periodic wobble in the movement of Barnard's Star, which he attributed to the presence of two unseen planetary companions revolving around the star. These bodies, he thought, could be about 0.8 and 1.1 times as massive as Jupiter. Jupiter-masses ) with an orbital period of 22 years, and a smaller 1.0 Jupiter-mass planet with a period of 11.5 years [Bell, 1997]. Over the course of time, however, his claims were severely questioned, starting with a 1973 paper by astronomers George Gatewood and Heinrich Eichhorn. It is now commonly held that the wobbling effect observed by van de Kamp was probably due to imperfections of the Sproul telescope, on account that new research with better instrumentation has not been able to duplicate his results.

Is There Life on Other Worlds?
By H. P. Blavatsky (from The Secret Doctrine Did the Ancients know of worlds besides their own? . . . That time is gone by for ever, when, although our pious ancestors believed that our earth was in the center of the universe, the church and her arrogant servants could insist that we should regard as a blasphemy the supposition that any other planet could be inhabited. Adam and Eve, the Serpent, and the Original Sin followed by atonement through blood, have been too long in the way, and thus was universal truth sacrificed to the insane conceit of us little men. Now what are the proofs thereof? Except inferential evidence and logical reasoning, there are none for the profane. To the Occultists, who believe in the knowledge acquired by countless generations of Seers and Initiates, the data offered in the Secret Books are all-sufficient. The general public needs other proofs, however . . . . We may approach the subject from its general aspect, and see whether belief in it is so very absurd, as some scientists along with other Nicodemuses would have it. Unconsciously, perhaps, in thinking of a plurality of inhabited " Worlds

    Implications of Extra-Terrestrial Life
Right now, there is a big buzz about the supposed finding of life on Mars. Even though it is not "intelligent", this finding prompted me to hypothesize about the effects of encountering beings from another planet with an intelligence similar to ours. Well, the question with the most influence on our relationship would be, of course, if we would coexist peacefully with them, or go into an all-out warkilling them, getting killed, and listening to the REM "It's the end of the world as we know it" theme music all the while. Despite all our human politics, and the number of psycho's running around the streets (and the Internethey, that could mean you ), I believe that we would somehow get it all together and start a peaceful relationship. As for the aliens, you never know what their agendas might be. But I think that, contrary to the Hollywood opinion, any being with enough intelligence to get into space would realize that there is no need to start an actual war, when there are so many computer simulations that let you conquer the universe from the comfort (and relative safety) of your own home.

    Scriptual References to Astronomy
by Erich Robert Paul Latter-day Saint scriptures indicate that both biblical and latter-day prophets and seers were shown visions of the heavenly realms to orient them to God's dominion and eternal purposes. These visions gave information about (1) the governing of systems of worlds and stellar objects; (2) a heliocentric, planetary cosmology; (3) the plurality of worlds; (4) the spiritual and physical creation of the earth and the universe; and (5) the role of Jesus Christ as creator. In contrast to some interpretations of biblical scholars who attribute a geocentric cosmology to the words of Joshua (10:12-14), Job (9:6-7), Isaiah (38:7-8), and other Old Testament passages, the Book of Mormon affirms the sun-centered (heliocentric) view accepted by modern planetary physics. The prophets Nephi 2 (Hel. 12:13-15) and Alma 2 agree that "surely it is the earth that moveth and not the sun" (Alma 30:44). Psalm 8:3-4 has been the classic text for discussion of the "plurality of worlds." LDS scriptures give even more direct support for modern astronomers' search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The prophets Enoch, Moses, and Joseph Smith all received revelations dealing with the existence of sentient life on other planets. Moses revealed both the spatial and temporal existence of countless worlds: that God had created "worlds without number," that "many worlds…. have [already] passed away," and that other worlds are yet to be created (Moses 1:33-38). Joseph Smith received
