Royal Society Committee on Astronomical Sciences
Report for the period 1 July 2001 to 30 June 2002
This report covers the period 1 July 2001 to 30 June 2002.
1. Committee membership
The committee was reconstituted in June 2001 with several new members being co-opted. Prof. John Hearnshaw (Univ. Canterbury) took on the chair of the committee, and the other members were Dr Grant Christie (Auckland Astronomical Soc.), Assoc. Prof. Peter Cottrell (Univ. Canterbury, former RSCAS chair), Dr Richard Dodd (Victoria Univ. Wellington, formerly Carter Observatory, Wellington), John Dunlop (Auckland Observatory) and Dr Neil Thomson (Univ. Otago).
2. Lindale 16-m dish antenna
3. RASNZ and amateur astronomical societies
In December the chair wrote to the secretary of RASNZ asking whether there were any matters of national concern that that society wished to bring to the attention of RSCAS, and hence of the Royal Society pertaining to astronomical sciences, and any developments which RASNZ might wish us to be aware of. We also requested that this request be forwarded by RASNZ to all affiliated regional astronomical societies, so as to reach a wide distribution of the amateur community in New Zealand. However Dr Dodd (RSCAS member) did outline the educational activities undertaken at Carter Observatory. Many educational programmes and public sessions are conducted by that organization to promote astronomy, especially to schools. One of those activities is a lecture tour of New Zealand by a distinguished overseas astronomer. In 2001 the Carter Memorial Lectures were given Dr Steven Edberg (NASA) on the Cassini mission to Saturn; in 2002 they were given by Dr Robin Catchpole (Royal Observatory, Greenwich) on the Hubble Space Telescope.

VISITING MATHEMATICIANS
Below is a list of mathematicians who are (or will be) visiting Australia or New Zealand. The main purpose of this section is to enable institutions, other than the principal host institution, to invite these visitors to spend some time with them. We would ask, however, that anyone wishing to issue such an invitation to a visitor do so in cooperation with the listed contact for enquiries. This will ease the contact's task of coordinating the visit as a whole. Please send details of visitors to your department to the Editor of the Gazette Details about each visitor are presented in the following order: name of visitor; home institution; whether accompanied; dates of visit; principal host institution; principal field of interest; contact for enquiries; comments.
