Offered through Montana State University and NTEN Spring 2002 - Fall 2002 - Spring 2003 - Fall 2003 - Sponsored by SIRTF and SOFIA Education and Public Outreach Managed by Dr. Tim Slater and the The Fall 2003 Semester will run from Sept 2nd to Dec 18th. See Course Schedule below. Skip to these sections: Course Description Instructors Publications Course Goals ... Course Structure Specifically for future students: Student Pre-requisites Participation Expectations The Invisible Universe Online: The Search for Astronomical Origins for Teachers presents our search for astronomical origins from the perspective of multiwavelength astronomy. It will provide an enhanced understanding of how astronomers use all energies of light to unfold the secrets of our universe. We will cover the long chain of events from the birth of the universe in the Big Bang, through the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets by focusing on the scientific questions, technological challenges, and space missions pursuing this search for origins. The course is created in alignment with the goals and emphasis of the National Science Education Standards. This course builds upon your existing astronomy knowledge and adds layers of understanding so that you have a deeper appreciation for the multiwavelength universe. In addition, many of our homework activities and discussions focus on teaching course concepts as a method to enhance your deeper understandings of the content. It is not necessary that you teach astronomy at this point in your career, only that you are open to critically thinking about how this content can be best taught to deal with learner misconceptions.

Presenting the Cosmos: Introductory Astronomy on the Web
Presenting the Cosmos is an introductory astronomy course intended for nonscience majors or anyone with an interest in astronomy at a level requiring no more mathematics than basic algebra. The course covers general sky phenomena and the development of our understanding of them, the origin of our solar system, elementary physics of light and atoms, the astrophysics of stars, the structure of galaxies, and the origin and development of the universe. Presenting the Cosmos employs a historical and cultural approach to the subject matter, with practical emphasis and suggestions throughout. The course is taught online via Learn@UW Online courses require considerable initiative and self-discipline on the part of the student, but offer great flexibility in return. For details on the course offering in a particular semester, consult the UW-Madison academic calendar and course catalog for that semester. You must be registered as a student at UW-Madison and have a valid NetId and password. These will be required to gain access to the course materials. (The current course number, 150, is temporary and in use only until a permanent course number is approved. The timetable specifies prerequisites for 150, but these do not apply to Presenting the Cosmos.)
Astronomy 150
Presenting the Cosmos is offered in two versions. They have in common the text book, instructor, and basic requirements. Astronomy 150 requires that the student:

Astronomy – Syllabus Course Description Astronomy is a course that introduces students to the study of astronomy and its history. Students study the different sectors of the sky, the stars, and the constellations that appear in the skies. The course includes a study of time and space orientation and the makeup and difference between the different types of stars. Students discuss the planetary system, stars and stellar evolution, and the galaxies and cosmology. The course makes extensive use of online resources that add information concerning career fields in astronomy and keep students abreast of current developments and discoveries. Required laboratory Internet-based activities are included within each lesson, each taking 1 hour to complete. Additional laboratory assignments are included for enrichment. Students are also encouraged to participate in group research projects and activities throughout the course, so that they may collaborate with other students and instructors. Middle-of-course and end-of-course surveys are conducted online so that students may make suggestions and critique the progress of the course, curriculum content, technology, and teaching methodologies. These suggestions are reviewed and implemented by AMDG staff for continual improvement of course content and delivery. AMDG course content is built by a variety of methods. Throughout the course Gagne's Events of Instruction are emphasized as well as integrating all 6 levels of Bloom's Taxonomy and 3 different learning styles so that students are encouraged to learn on all levels. Gagne's events are clearly delineated within the lesson and Bloom's words are bolded throughout the course. Instructors are encouraged to adapt, add, and include assignments that utilize recommended readings and activities for remediation or advancement of students in course content. Courses are handicapped accessible and adhere to ISTE
