Schedule of Courses ... Contact Us The Physics major at Otterbein College prepares students interested in the natural sciences for a wide variety of careers, from academic or industrial research and development, to medicine, law or business, by providing training in problem solving and analytical thinking. Introductory physics is also taken by students majoring in Chemistry and Life Science who wish to understand the physical principles applied in their own disciplines. The Physical Science major prepares students for a career in teaching in grades 7-12. Otterbein offers a program in Engineering in cooperation with Washington University in St. Louis and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland leading to a B.A. degree from Otterbein College and a B.S. degree in Engineering from the partner institution. Students in this program commonly attend Otterbein for three years and Washington University or Case Western for two. The cooperative engineering program is an attractive alternative to traditional engineering curricula which are typically highly structured and require longer than four years to complete. Program graduates are "liberally educated engineers" with a professional advantage due to the distinctive range of their skills, from problem solving to communication. Getting started with Astro 160 Mm hybrid/online
First, make sure that you are registered for this course: ASTR 160-01 in Summer 2005. Check through GET or STAR if you are not sure. For interaction, quizzes, the writing assignment, and the final we will use web based environment known as the WebCT (Web Course Tools). You must create your personal "WebCT ID" on campus WebCT server. The procedure to do so is described in http://www.calstatela.edu/centers/cetl/fitsc/webct/pdf/selfreg.pdf It is a pretty straightforward procedure: Go to WebCT server , then, click on link for Create MyWebCT and enter the data.
Warning 1 : make sure to enter your correct name as prompted, first then last, and NOT all in lower case or all in upper case . I.e., it should be John Smith , not "Smith John", "john smith", "smith john", "JOHN SMITH" or "SMITH JOHN." This is serious . If you enter your name incorrectly you are violating the alphabetic order by which the grade rosters are created, and you and everyone in the class roster after you may have incorrectly assigned grade. I will deduct points for students who have incorrectly entered names so that I have to make correction by hand. Warning 2 : in order to use the WebCT you have to allow your browser to accept cookies! Do so now, or at least you must do it before you login to the WebCT. You can disallow cookies after you log out from WebCT.

  • Web Applications.
So far, I have completed the first four courses and will begin the fifth in early October 2005:
    • TT280 - Web Applications (completed 2002).
TT281 - The client side of applications development (completed 2003).
TT282 - the server side of applications development (completed 2004).
TT380 - Databases within website design (completed 2005).
    Sciences
    • S103 - Discovering Science (2005)
S282 - Astronomy. (2003) I've had to drop out of this course (late July 2003) but have included information and links on as much of the course as possible, so it should still be useful to anyone thinking of taking S282 next year. There is also advice about buying a telescope included.

What kind of Internet skills do you need for this course?

How to register for this class?

Do we have synchronous chats in this class?
... Common problem with taking a Quiz or the Final
What are the "hybrid" and "online" courses?

An online course has no lectures or campus meetings of any kind, including office hours and assignments. Everything is done through the Internet, using web tools and e-mail, with the exception of Final Exam which has to be taken on campus.
A hybrid course has some class meetings on campus, while most or all of the assignments are done through the Internet, using web tools and e-mail. The Final Exam is done on campus. In Summer of 2005, Astronomy 151-01 will run as online course
What kind of Internet skills do you need for this course?
Technically not much: merely that you are comfortable with browsing the web and using the e-mail.
The specific tasks that you need include knowing how to configure browser to allow cookies and pop-up windows, and basic survival skills - what to do when connection breaks, when are the times when the connection is fastest, etc.
It would help if you are comfortable with some Internet jargon, or if you have some experience with newsgroups or e-mail discussion lists.

(E-mail: mmazzolini@swin.edu.au) Keywords: astronomy education Abstract Teaching an astronomy course online involves many challenges. One major challenge is the design of appropriate, practical and challenging forms of assessment which focus both on the astronomy content of the course and on the particular astronomy interests of the enrollees. This paper will discuss the assessment approaches we have chosen for our introductory-level subjects, the outcomes obtained and the reactions of the course participants. In particular, some of the wide variety of project work undertaken by the participants will be described. 1. Overview Swinburne Astronomy Online, an online Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Astronomy), commenced in Semester 1, 1999 with 2 introductory-level subjects (Exploring the Solar System, Exploring Stars and the Milky Way) which assume no previous knowledge of astronomy or physics. In Semester 2 1999 and Semester 1 2000 we added a three more subjects: another introductory-level subject (History of Astronomy) and two more advanced subjects (Exploring Galaxies and the Cosmos, Theories of Space and Time). Further advanced subjects are being developed for delivery in the second half of 2000 and beyond. The more advanced subjects assume familiarity with introductory, tertiary-level mathematics, whereas the general-interest subjects are open to all.

Peninsula Astronomical Society
The Peninsula Astronomical Society is a group of over 200 bay-area astronomy enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. Some members are professionally trained in astronomy, others are just starting and have never looked through a telescope before. One thing that we all have in common is an interest in the sky. As part of its commitment to bringing astronomy to the public, the Peninsula Astronomical Society (P.A.S) operates the Foothill College Observatory . The Observatory is on the campus of Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, CA (between San Jose and Palo Alto). The observatory is staffed by members of the society who volunteer to conduct the regularly scheduled public procrams. In addition to operating the Foothill Observatory, the P.A.S. has its own observatory in the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains. This location has room for members to set up their own telescopes at our monthly star parties. Three buildings at the site house the society's 12", 16", and 28" telescopes, which are available for member use. The P.A.S. holds meetings on the second Friday of each month at 7:30 pm in Room 5001 next to Parking Lot 5 on the campus of Foothill College. Each meeting features a speaker (or speakers) bringing us up to date on different topics in astronomy. The public is welcome to attend the meetings of the Peninsula Astronomical Society. There is no charge for attending these meetings. Please note that visitor parking permits are available from the machines in the parking lots for $2.00.

Online Courses
Students enrolled in Internet courses may participate in class activities from their home, office or other location at times convenient for them. This is an attractive alternative to traditional, campus based instruction for students with work, family or other time and place restrictions. If you:
  • are a self-motivated person and will take responsibility for your learning
  • try to solve problems and work through difficulties independently with support from your professor and classmates
  • are comfortable using a computer and have basic word processing, e-mail, and internet navigational skills
...then an internet class section might be the right choice for you. Students who enroll in online classes should make sure that their current address and phone numbers are on file (use WebSTAR to verify). This will ensure your instructor is able to contact you with any new information about your class. The Open Access Computer Lab is available to students who need access to a computer and the Internet.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE
This section of Introduction to Astronomy is offered as an alternative to the usual presentation format. There are no regular class meetings, although there will be on-campus testing and optional on-campus help sessions. There are no on-campus lab sessions. That statement is a mistake in the course catalog. The textbook will be “Discovering the Universe” [6 th edition], the same text used for the other sections of Introduction to Astronomy. [The text is available in the Meramec bookstore as well as from online sources, e.g. www.ecampus.com The ISBN number for the text is 0-7167-4450-3. If you plan to get the text from the bookstore do it ASAP because the bookstore frequently does not order enough books for all sections. For each chapter, there is a list of key words, summaries of key ideas, and study exercises. There are also some links to related web sites. The text comes with a CD that is very helpful, so you’ll need to have a CD drive on your computer. The CD has self- tests, a planetarium program, and animated illustrations. The many animations are very helpful to students. So much of astronomy is embodied in models, and most of these models involve motion. For students to be able to see the motion, rather than just imagine it, is important to student understanding.

Required Orientation for WebLab
(Earth 102, Observational Astronomy Totally Online Lab) Hi and welcome the Earth 102, the Online Astronomy Lab Course I call WebLab. If you are also in an Earth 101 online lecture course, it will be a separate course and require separate answers for ALL questions. please do not combine the lecture and lab courses in the same e-mails. All WebLab students must complete the exercises in this orientation by Sun., 9/4, 2005, by midnight in order to continue in the course.
This orientation has two goals. The first goal is to help you determine if you are suited to taking this online course. The second goal is to give you experience using some of the online course tools.
How long will it take you to complete the activities in this orientation?
About ONE hour (maximum)
Are you suited for online instruction?
Probably the TWO most common things that students report as being necessary for success in taking an online course are: (1) good time management skills (2) motivation Of course, time management and motivation are also necessary for success in taking an on-campus course, but in online courses managing your time well and being motivated to complete coursework are even more critical to your success. Online you don't have me to lead you through class activities, remind you about when coursework is due, or motivate you like in an on-campus course.
