Click to enlarge Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory Open House Sep 16, 2005 - Since it's in my neighbourhood, globally speaking, I thought I'd mention that the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, which is located in Southeast British Columbia, will be having an open house on Saturday, September 24. They've got a 26-metre radio dish, and many other instruments. It would be a great opportunity to see the equipment and meet radio astronomers, so if you live nearby, put this on your calendar. (Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend... maybe next year).

Sedna, the new planetoid found at the outer edges of our Solar System, may have a small orbiting moon (Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/R Hurt, SSC-Caltech) Astronomers have discovered the coldest and most distant object ever found in our Solar System, a dark and frigid world smaller than Pluto and three times further away.
The Inuit goddess lived in an icy cave at the bottom of the ocean, making Sedna an appropriate name for the coldest body known to orbit the Sun.
"The Sun appears so small from that distance that you could completely block it out with the head of a pin," said Associate Professor Mike Brown, a U.S. astronomer at the California Institute of Technology , who led the research team.
Sedna is one of the reddest objects in the Solar System, after Mars, and takes 10,500 years to travel its highly elliptical path around the Sun.
The astronomers think Sedna is the first detection of the hypothetical Oort cloud, a group of small icy objects that supplies some of the comets that streak by Earth. But Sedna is much closer to the Sun than predicted, so could form part of an inner Oort cloud, the astronomers said.
Brown and the other astronomers detected Sedna in November 2003 during a survey of the outer Solar System.
