Attention: Rens Waters, professor Applications are invited for a post-doc position in INFRARED astronomy at the Astronomical Institute of the University of Amsterdam for a period of two years, with a possible extension of a third year. The position is offered in collaboration with the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of Groningen University. Both institutes are involved in the construction and commissioning of the VISIR and MIDI instruments for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and VLT Interferometer of the European Southern Observatory. The post-doc will play an active role in the commissioning and science programmes of both instruments, in close collaboration with the MIDI and VISIR teams, in particular with Jan-Willem Pel (Groningen). The Amsterdam and Groningen institutes are part of the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA). Research in the infrared and sub-mm astronomy group in Amsterdam focusses on circumstellar matter; the group consists of two staff, two post-docs and 8 graduate students.

Deadline for Next Solar News
From Your Faithful Scribe editor@spd.aas.org
15 May 2002 I depart for the Albuquerque meeting on the morning of 1 June. Thus, the next issue of SolarNews will be mailed out on May 30. Please have any submissions in my virtual hands by the end of May 29 (US West Coast time). Also, apologies to a few of you who receive this issue twice. I caught a major error after starting the first mailing, so I cancelled it and fixed the problem.
From John Leibacher leib@noao.edu
15 May 2002 No, I don't think that I am THAT geographically challenged; YES this year's meeting is coming up in a couple of weeks in Albuquerque; BUT I am pleased to announce that the SPD Committee has accepted the offer of Dave Rust and colleagues at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory located between Baltimore and Washington, DC to host next year's SPD Meeting June 16 - 20, 2003. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Our colleagues at GSFC, NASA HQ and NRL will be joining in the hosting, and we look forward to an exciting program, and the opportunity to take advantage of the many attractions that the Baltimore/Washington area offers. You have just a few more days to vote for three very important positions in the operation of your SPD: two members of the Committee, and a Vice-Chair who will be responsible for the organization of next year's meeting and who will then become Chair in the following year. There's no chad to worry about, so just get out your trusty number 2 pencil, or better yet pen, AND VOTE. We will be discussing the possibility of moving to electronic voting in the future, so exercise the good old paper ballot while you still can!!

Dear visitors, this article is overtaken from Academy Bulletin of Czech Academy of Sciences no. 6 / 2000 : ( the picture from the title side - X-ray objectives developed in Optical Development Workshop in the late of 80. years for the program Interkosmos ) Optical Development Laboratory and Workshop Czech Academy of Sciences The town Turnov has more as hundred years tradition in the production of optics. There was the jewelery school in the last century, you find at present time several firms there, which are dealing with grinding of precious stones and optical production. There found its place the Optical Development Laboratory ( Workshop ) of Czech Academy of Sciences, which was originated in the begin of 60. years. This laboratory produced the unique optical parts for Czech Academy of Sciences, for example - the program Interkosmos. This laboratory was at first direct directed from Astronomical Institute i When the new building was finished in Skalova street, the laboratory became full independent and one of the service workplaces of Czech Academy of Sciences. k Melich is its director from December of last year and we asked him for this interview : You are working in optics for your whole life. Can we say your work is your hobby, too.
