Staff Links Publications History Bg En HISTORY 1. HISTORY Solar physics in Bulgaria is a young field of Bulgarian science. In 1958 Department of Astronomy becames an independent division of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) . In this new section A. Bonov, M. Kalinkov, D. Raikova and their colleagues worked on the Sun's problems and the solar activity.
In 1977 Vladimir Dermendjiev took up his duties as a research worker at the Department of Astronomy in BAS. In 1985 he founded a division "Sun" in the Department of Astronomy, now Institute of Astronomy . He laid the foundations of systematic and detailed researches of the Solar physics in our country. Furthermore, V. Dermendjiev was associated lecturer of the solar physics at the Astronomy Department in the faculty of Physics at Sofia University.
There are three main directions of solar research in "Sun" division at the Institute of Astronomy: 1) Processing of observational materials from the observatories in other countries using the Joyce Loebl microdensitometer in National Astronomical Observatory-Rozhen; 2) Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) rendering, modeling and computer simulation of the solar activity phenomena; 3) White-light solar observations.
The processing of observational materials is a part of the energetic mutual collaborations between "Sun" division and: the Meudon Observatory in Paris and the Institute d'Astrophysique Spatiale in Orse, France; the Astronomical Observatory of Wroclaw University in Poland; the Astronomical Observatory in Ondéejov, Czech Republic; the Astronomical Institute in Tatranska Lomnica, Slovakia; the Astronomical Institute in Bucharest, Romania; the IZMIRAN in Troitsk, Russia; the Astronomical Observatory of Istanbul University in Turkey. One of the main tendencies of Dermenjiev's scientific researches was the MHD modeling of different activity phenomena. His researches in this direction laid the beginnings of the solar MHD and plasma physics in our country.

Abstract
Three Main Projections
  • The Polar Projection
  • The Zenithal Projection
  • The Equatorial Projection
While the first two are intended to produce general large field planetarium charts centered on the celestial poles or the Zenith of a given place at a given time, the last one was conceived to run large, small and very small field professional charts using 15 major astronomical offline catallogues and other 5 online.
    The Database
Most databases used by Celestial Maps were previously built by running additional programs to select the fields of interests from the original astronomical catallogues, group and index them to provide fast access, then saving the coded (much smaller) databases to appropriate directories to be used by the software. Staring with v.10, the databases used by Celestial Maps have been grouped in three categories:
  • Small Database

    IfA Hilo Facility
The Hilo base facility of the Institute for Astronomy in the University Park supports the Institute's telescope operations on Mauna Kea and provides expansion space for its technology and instrumentation development, teaching, and outreach programs. The $11 million 35,000 square-foot split-level building was designed by Oda/McCarty Architects, Ltd., of Hilo and was built by Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company. The building, at the University of Hawaii Hilo Research and Technology Park, was dedicated on February 23, 2001. The IfA Hilo Facility is equipped with shops and laboratories for the development and maintenance of scientific instruments and telescopes, library, auditorium and remote telescope operation rooms. The office space accommodates astronomers, engineers, technicians, administrative and management staff, students and academic visitors. High-bandwith fiber-optics data and video links connect the Hilo building to IfA facilities on Oahu and Maui, telescopes on Mauna Kea, and to other astronomical institutes around the world. The building is designed to accommodate about 70 employees. It is expected that this major decentralization and expansion of the Institute's activities will take several years. In addition to accommodating IfA personnel and programs, the new facility also provides space for the Hilo operations of the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii, for UH Hilo astronomers, and for other UH Hilo programs. This new facility also promotes much closer collaboration between the astronomy programs of the Institute and those at UH Hilo, in particular, the University's first Bachelor of Science in Astronomy program, now offered by UH Hilo.
