ASTRONOMY Swiss institute could shut One of Switzerland¹s leading centres of astronomy is scheduled to close as part of a cost-cutting exercise by the University of Basel. The Basel Astronomical Institute, which was founded in 1874, is set to shut in 2008 following a decision made by the university's council. Four full-time academics, six postdocs as well as administrative and technical staff will lose their jobs. The university also plans to save money by abandoning several other areas of research, including geology and most of nuclear. Members of the institute are furious at the plans, which were announced out of the blue at the end of January. They are angry that they were not consulted or given a chance to make their case. The university says that it wants to shut the institute because it has few links with other departments and has only 10 students on its undergraduate astronomy degree - thereby discounting the much larger number of students who take astronomy classes for their physics degree. It also says that there are enough other astronomy institutes in Switzerland. Several thousand people have already signed a petition against the planned closures, while almost 3000 students a third of the university's student body have demonstrated against the plans. Messages of support have also been received from members of the international physics and astronomy community, including Martin Huber, president of the European Physical Society, who received his PhD from Basel. "One of the big challenges facing the physics community today is attracting students into the subject, and an offer of astronomy lectures within the physics curriculum will attract more students," says Huber. The university will look again at the proposed restructurization including the budget figures and discuss the proposed measures with local government.

NOVA
NOVA is an abbreviation of the 'Nederlandse Onderzoekschool Voor Astronomie', i.e., the ' Netherlands Research School for Astronomy'. It is a federation of the astronomy institutes of the universities of Amsterdam Groningen Leiden Nijmegen , and Utrecht . Astronomy is being considered top-science in The Netherlands. NOVA was selected as top-research school in 1998 and again in 2003, and is as such receiving substantial funding by the Dutch Ministry of Education.
The Mission of NOVA
NOVA's mission is two-fold:
  • to carry out frontline astronomical research in the Netherlands; to train young astronomers at the highest international level.
All graduate astronomy education in the Netherlands is concentrated in NOVA, but NOVA is also monitoring and coordinating the Astronomy MSc education in The Netherlands.

Sister Institutes
There are four regular university astronomy institutes in the Netherlands - Leiden (UL), Groningen (RUG), Amsterdam (UvA) and Utrecht (UU). Since a few years, there is a small astronomical institute including a Ph.D. program in astronomy at the Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (RUN), the Roman Catholic university. At the Vrije Universiteit (VU), the Calvinist confessional university in Amsterdam, education in astronomy is provided by joint appointments with the University of Amsterdam. The present Directors of the other institutes are:
  • Groningen - RUG: Piet van der Kruit http://www.rug.nl/sterrenkunde/ Amsterdam - UvA: Ed van den Heuvel http://www.astro.uva.nl/ Utrecht - UU: Norbert Langer http://www.astro.uu.nl/ Nijmegen - RUN: Jan Kuipers http://www.astro.kun.nl/ The contact astronomer at the VU is Huib Henrichs http://www.nat.vu.nl/astr/
There tends to be some specialization in astronomical research interests between these various institutes, namely:
  • Leiden and Groningen - Extragalactic, Interstellar Medium, Galactic Structure

Introduction to the EVN
The European VLBI Network (EVN) is an interferometric array of radio telescopes spread throughout Europe and beyond (see Figure below), which conducts unique, high resolution, radio astronomical observations of cosmic radio sources. It is the most sensitive VLBI array in the world, thanks to the collection of extremely large telescopes that contribute to the network. VLBI provides astronomers with their sharpest view of the most energetic phenomena in the universe, including expanding supernovae, pulsars, flare stars, star-forming regions in molecular clouds, the environment surrounding nearby and distant galaxies, gravitational lenses, starburst galaxies and distant active galactic nuclei.
Formation of the EVN
The European VLBI Network (EVN) was formed in 1980 by five of the major radio astronomy institutes in Europe and Geodetic Dept of the University of Bonn. The founding radio astronomy institutes were:
  • MPIfR in Bonn, Germany IRA in Bologna, Italy ASTRON in Dwingeloo, The Netherlands
