Family Astronomy Activities While astronomy is making a new appearance in many science courses at school, discovering the night sky is certainly not limited to the classroom! Enjoy astronomy through some of these activities designed for the whole family. Canadian Junior Astronomer Program This new initiative of the Canadian Astronomical Society invites students of all ages to become a Junior Astronomer. Select from a list of things to find in the sky and on the internet to complete a level, and move from Star, to Nova, to Supernova. The levels can be completed by the whole family or parents can help out the younger ones. Camping under the Stars For many who live in the city, camping is the only time they might have access to truly dark skies - perfect for stargazing! Listed below are suggestions for camping activities which can be done on one's own, as a family or as a group. Star Charts With darker skies come more stars - sometimes even the Big Dipper is hard to pick out! Check out both simple star charts and more advanced ones, and be sure to take one with you when you camp. Don't forget your flashlight! Project ASTRO's amateur and professional astronomers work in partnership with educators to bring astronomy to students and to help teachers develop their understanding and comfort with astronomy. Commitment. Participating astronomers make a commitment to attend a training workshop and to visit their partner school at least four times during the school year. Almost all astronomers make at least three to four visits during their first year in the project, and a good number visit more often, some as many as weekly. Roles for Astronomer during Class Visits. Astronomers play a number of different roles during their visits. Most astronomers, working together with their teacher partners, lead or help lead students in hands-on astronomy activities. In many cases, the astronomer and teacher "team-teach," that is, they lead the activity together. In other cases, teachers prepare their students for the visit, and the astronomer leads the activity on his or her own. Kinds of Activities.

The history behind the astronomy activities at Amtsgymnasiet i Sønderborg
For ten years astronomy has been a key activity at Amtsgymnasiet i Sønderborg. It started as an after-school-activity for specially interested students, but since 1994 it has been a subject in its own right - one school year comprising 4 lessons a week for students who choose that particular subject.
Since the summer of 1994 we have had the opportunity of performing school based observations, because a grant from the Danish Velux-foundation then made it possible to acquire a powerful 16'' Meade telescope. Equipped with an electronic CCD-camera this telescope has made it possible to shoot pictures in a quality that we could until then only dream of. This work is done in cooperation with the neighbouring EUC-Syd school. Jump to the Astronomy Index Page of Amtsgymnasiet i Sønderborg

Title: The Universe at Your Fingertips Publisher: Astronomical Society of the Pacific Junior High and High School A Collection of Hands-on Astronomy Activities in Spanish from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. More about The Universe at Your Fingertips
Why a Spanish-Language Materials Educational Center at NOAO?
We are often asked this question in Tucson, Arizona, a city with many Spanish-speaking residents located only 100 kilometers from Mexico. When the staff of the NOAO Educational Outreach Group searched on the web for Spanish language materials in science and astronomy, we were surprised at how few resources were easily found. With assistance from the National Science Foundation, we set out to remedy this situation. Recent effort by NOAO to develop cross-cultural educational outreach programs between the U.S. and Chile has cultivated some new connections with Spanish-speaking science teachers and district science coordinators in both Tucson and in La Serena, Chile (where some NOAO telescopes are located.) We decided to build on these relationships and programs, and with their help and advice, we have created a bilingual reference to enable educators to find and purchase high-quality materials that have been produced in Spanish. Our main aim was to find first-rate astronomy materials in Spanish, but along the way we found plenty of physics, chemistry, optics, and earth science educational materials too.

Under development for almost five years, this link allows Gemini to move forward towards its goal of becoming the world's first "cyber observatory." According to Peter Michaud, Public Information and Outreach Manager for the Gemini Observatory, "A virtual ribbon cutting on August 13, 2002 officially inaugurated the new link between the twin observatories. This link will allow astronomers to access skies in both the northern and southern hemispheres without having to travel to Hawaii or Chile."
