Lunar meteorites tell scientists about the chemistry of the Moon's surface The violent history of a meteorite from the Moon has been charted for the first time, Science magazine reports.
Analyses of the rock's geology show it endured three giant impacts, before finally being hit so hard that it was catapulted into space. The rock's composition also allowed scientists to pinpoint its place of origin - the Moon's Imbrium Basin. Never before have scientists been able to describe a lunar meteorite's travel itinerary in such fine detail. Little fragments One of the only ways to understand the chemistry of the Moon's surface is by analysing lunar meteorites - little fragments of rock that are flung into space during great impacts before occasionally winding up on Earth. But they are pretty rare - a lunar meteorite is a special discovery. Only 30 of them have ever been found in deserts around the globe. Lunar meteorites are useful for building up a data base of the range of rocks on the Moon. But it is hard to work out which rocks come from where, because Moon rocks do not often betray their exact place of origin.

Do Search Engines Suppress Controversy?
A June 2003 U.S. FCC ruling on media ownership consolidation raised the question: Does the Internet provide effective alternatives to TV, radio, and news channels? Are websites cost-effective outlets for expression of diverse opinions and fair dissemination of information? Some researchers ( see references ) suggest the Web is much less than a distinct alternative to traditional media, and even presents similar barriers and limits. Search engines the central force for finding information on the Web have inherent biases, as does any technology. Perhaps we can test one distinctive aspect of this question: do search engines suppress controversy
Suppose you query a search engine on a topic of new interest or to meet a current need. Perhaps the herbal remedy "St John's Wort" intrigues you, or you're planning a trip to the Central American country of "Belize", maybe considering getting another degree via "Distance Learning", helping your child write a report on "female astronauts", or reviewing the life and times of "Albert Einstein". What if each topic came back in the top search results without any apparent controversy: no disagreements about effectiveness of the herbal remedy, nothing but enticing beach hotels and ecotourism in Belize, a roster of good-looking sites promising learning at your own pace, a space history emphasizing first Russian and American women astronauts, or a plethora of quotation-filled biographies that briefly allude to Einstein's pre-WWII life in Europe. Each topic appears as if the search engine had a distinctly "sunny personality", t

Van Flandern recounted what its effects were: I will make my own comments on the Face on Mars debate at the end of this article, in the context of some new and exciting images of other Martian sites that came to light in early-2001. But first, I would like to address some wider issues involving Mars and its solar system environs.
The consensus among modern scientists is that Mars was once a vibrant world, with oceans of water, an atmosphere and a strong magnetic field.
Today, the oceans of water are gone, the atmosphere is gone and the magnetic field is nothing more than a barely detectable pulse.
What happened on Mars to turn it from a paradisiacal garden into a rusty-coloured wasteland?
The scientific consensus is that the Old Mars suffered a devastating bombardment from asteroids or comets. The results of this devastation are plain to see on the surface of the New Mars.

SPACEWALKERS NAMED FOR SPACE STATION ASSEMBLY FLIGHTS
A cadre of 14 Space Shuttle astronauts has begun intensive training in preparation for the spacewalks required for on-orbit construction of the International Space Station. "It is important for us to begin work now to train the crews who will support Space Station assembly flights," said David C. Leestma, director of Flight Crew Operations. "These crew members will be exceptionally busy preparing for some challenging and demanding tasks, from initial assembly through installation of the robotic arm and an airlock for station-based spacewalks. We expect that these assignments may be refined in the future, with additional tasks as mission requirements dictate." The first astronauts assigned to train for space station assembly tasks were Jerry L. Ross (Col., USAF) and James H. Newman, Ph.D., who were named to the STS-88 crew in August 1996. Training will now expand to include Leroy Chiao, Ph.D.; Robert L. Curbeam, Jr., (Lt. Cmdr., USN); Michael L. Gernhardt, Ph.D.; Canadian Astronaut Chris A. Hadfield (Lt. Col., CAF); Thomas D. Jones, Ph.D; Mark C. Lee (Col., USAF); Michael Lopez-Alegria (Cmdr., USN); William S. "Bill" McArthur, Jr., (Col., USA); Carlos I. Noriega (Major, USMC); James F. Reilly, II, Ph.D.; Joseph R. It is, of course, bio-magnetic healing, the therapy that helps the body heal itself. Bio-magnetic therapy is simple and natural. Take the fact that iron makes up about 4 percent of our blood content and then imagine magnets attracting metal and you have the basis of the therapy. Magnets placed on the body increase blood flow in a specific area, much as exercising does; indeed often giving a similar feeling of euphoria. Capillaries carry increased oxygen and nutrients to the cells accelerating the healing process. Meanwhile, muscles lengthen and relax as magnetic waves pass through tissue, thus helping reduce muscle swelling and pain as the magnets neutralise the acidity in the area and assist by kicking in the body's own beta endorphin system (the body's own pain-relieving defence).

Dr. Baker's research in the area of autoimmune endocrine disease has helped define the basis of the autoimmune response to thyroid auto antigens. In particular, his recent work has focused on epitope mapping thyroid peroxidase, a major autoantigen in autoimmune thyroid disease. His laboratory has used molecular biologic techniques to identify the specific epitopes recognized in TPO and has shown that the recognition of this autoantigen is heterogeneous in different individuals. In collaboration with Dr. Su He Wang, Dr. Baker is currently exploring the genetic basis of this recognition. This research has been well funded on a national level including a series of grants from the National Institutes of Allergy, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Thomas Giordano

Today, at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, the outcome of the SUCCESS 2002 Student Contest was announced to contestants eagerly waiting to see if their proposed experiment had won a prize in this competition organised every two years by the European Space Agency (ESA).
The SUCCESS Student Contest is open to European university students, up to Masters level, and from all disciplines. Entrants have to propose an experiment that could be flown on the International Space Station (ISS). The students are challenged to imagine how the physical and operational environment on board the ISS could benefit their experiments. Parameters to consider include the absence of gravity, the vacuum of outer space, the high altitude above the Earth, and the isolated environment in which the astronauts live and work. The aim of the contest is to turn students of today into Space Station users of tomorrow, sparking and developing an interest in seeing research in space as possible even for those still in education. For the 2002 contest experiment proposals were invited in disciplines as diverse as life sciences, physical sciences, space sciences, technology and Earth observation. The students entering SUCCESS 2002 had to go through three phases. They first had to write an essay describing their experiment. A scientific board selected the best essays to move on to the second phase of the competition. Exactly 100 students entered the first phase and submitted essays. Nineteen came from universities in the United Kingdom, 18 from Italy, 13 from Germany, 8 from Russia, 7 from France, 4 from Finland, 4 from the Netherlands, 3 each from Belgium, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Hungary, 2 from Bulgaria and 1 each from Canada, India, Switzerland, the USA, Rumania, the Czech Republic and Belorus.

Interview Transcript Students on Scholastic.com interviewed astronaut Ellen Ochoa during 1999's Hispanic Heritage Month. Below is a transcript of that interview.
What are your Hispanic roots? Did you speak Spanish at home when you were growing up?
My Hispanic roots come from my father's side. His parents were Mexican, but my father was born in this country. He was one of 12 children. My father grew up speaking both Spanish and English but unfortunately he didn't speak Spanish with us at home. When I was growing up, my father believed as many people did at the time that there was a prejudice against people speaking their native language. It's really too bad, and I'm glad that things have changed in recent years.
Does your being Hispanic American make you feel more pressure and more pride about your accomplishments? Do you have that in mind when you think of how well you've done in life?
