Mission Columbia: Meet Israel's First Astronaut, Ilan Ramon
By Jim Banke

Senior Producer, Cape Canaveral Bureau posted: 07:00 am ET 14 January 2003 CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. When shuttle Columbia lifts off on its 16-day marathon science mission, payload specialist Ilan Ramon will be strapped into a seat on the middeck, making history as Israel's first astronaut. A colonel in the Israeli Air Force and the son of a Holocaust survivor of Auschwitz, Ramon's principal job will be to operate an experiment that tracks dust particles from sandstorms blowing through Earth's atmosphere, including those that swirl about the Mediterranean region. Ramon, 48, says he's fully aware that the topic of Israel often divides people, but he hopes his presence on the STS-107 shuttle mission will do just the opposite.

  • Born: 18 November 1923 Birthplace: East Derry, New Hampshire Died: 21 July 1998 (leukemia) Best Known As: The first American in space
A former Navy test pilot, Shepard was one of the original seven astronauts chosen by NASA for its Mercury program. He became the first American in space on 5 May 1961, when he went aloft in the Freedom 7 capsule for a 15-minute sub-orbital flight. ( John Glenn later became the first American to circle the entire globe in space; earlier Ham the Chimp had been the first American primate in space.) The flight made Shepard a national hero. He was disqualified from early moon missions due to an inner ear disorder, but he persisted and was given command of Apollo 14. In 1971 Shepard and fellow astronaut Edgar Mitchell landed on the moon, becoming the fifth and sixth men to walk there. While on the moon, Shepard playfully pulled out a golf ball and whacked it across the lunar surface. He retired from the space program in 1974, also retiring from the Navy with the rank of rear admiral. The first man in space was Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin , who orbited the Earth on 12 April 1961.

    Charles "Pete" Conrad, Jr.
Cpt., USN Test Pilot and U.S. Astronaut Born Philadelphia, PA June 2, 1930 - July 8, 1999
Born and raised near Philadelphia, Conrad developed his love for flying at an early age. When he was 5, he talked his father into allowing him to ride in a small plane and then popped into the front seat ahead of everyone else.
He took flying lessons and flew solo at the age of 16. Later, he became an aeronautical engineer, receiving his degree from Princeton in 1953, and a famed Navy test pilot. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration selected him as an astronaut in 1962, three years after the first seven astronauts were chosen.
He was the third astronaut of twelve astronauts to walk on the moon. During Apollo 12, he and astronaut Alan Bean spent seven hours and 45 minutes on the lunar surface. Among other tasks, they installed a nuclear power generating station to provide a power source for long-term experiments.

They would be John Young and Robert Crippen. Young and Crippen piloted the first ever flight of a space shuttle back on April 12, 1981, sadly enough as many now know, that maiden voyage was flown by the Columbia.
Some research shows that Young is still working at NASA, Crippen retired from NASA and is working at Morton-Thiokol.
The reasons could be any and certainly understandable, given Young and Crippens relation to both the shuttle program and the Columbia itself.

    Scenario: Mars Medical Emergency
"Here's what we're going to do," proclaimed the Flight Director to his control room team. "Follow the checklists and anticipate where they will be by the time our words reach them. Predict the options that will face them, advise them of what we see as the best course. Specify steps to back out of any wrong paths they may have blundered into.
"Each of you has a special team," he continued. "Let's get to work." The flight Director thought about proclaiming that failure was not an option, but didn't want to distract them.
This is not an imaginary scene; the events actually occurred, but it was only a drill. As part of a spaceflight medical emergency simulation staged at a medical conference late in 1997, I had organized the activity to exercise the participants' medical knowledge and also to drive home some specific lessons about emergency medicine in 'extreme environments.'
The conference, entitled 'Pushing the Envelope II: Medicine on Mars,' had been sponsored by the Center for Aerospace Medicine and Physiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. The program chairman, Dr. Patricia Santy, was an international expert on spaceflight psychology and on astronaut selection.
