Bill Nye the Science Guy makes science fun. Really! Dr. Matrix Science Web World: Junior Scientists is one of the best overall sites you will find. Groovy graphics, too. Explore Science is a virtual science lab devoted to scientific theory. Shockwave needed. Mad Scientist Network connects you to the experts. Questions submitted must be science related and are usually answered within seven days. There is a searchable archive that dates back to 1995. Science Friday Kids' Connection is one of the coolest science sites. Hosted by National Public Radio, here you can perform online experiments to learn about everything from gravity to plastic, read about emerging diseases, insects, and just about anything else you can think of. The Science Learning Network "explores how telecomputing can support inquiry-based science education." Sounds boring, right? It isn't, though. I wonder who's eye they're about to cut open there? Scientific American: Ask the Experts will answer your questions by email. The site also contains archives of information about astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, geology, math, medicine, and physics.

Richard M. Nixon Reconciliation was the first goal set by President Richard M. Nixon. The Nation was painfully divided, with turbulence in the cities and war overseas. During his Presidency, Nixon succeeded in ending American fighting in Viet Nam and improving relations with the U.S.S.R. and China. But the Watergate scandal brought fresh divisions to the country and ultimately led to his resignation. His election in 1968 had climaxed a career unusual on two counts: his early success and his comeback after being defeated for President in 1960 and for Governor of California in 1962. Born in California in 1913, Nixon had a brilliant record at Whittier College and Duke University Law School before beginning the practice of law. In 1940, he married Patricia Ryan; they had two daughters, Patricia (Tricia) and Julie. During World War II, Nixon served as a Navy lieutenant commander in the Pacific.

Scott Carpenter, a dynamic pioneer of modern exploration, has the unique distinction of being the first human ever to penetrate both inner and outer space, thereby acquiring the dual title, Astronaut/Aquanaut. He was born in Boulder, Colorado, on May 1, 1925, the son of research chemist Dr. M. Scott Carpenter and Florence Kelso Noxon Carpenter. He attended the University of Colorado from 1945 to 1949 and received a bachelor of science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Carpenter was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1949. He was given flight training at Pensacola, Florida and Corpus Christi, Texas and designated a Naval Aviator in April, 1951. During the Korean War he served with patrol Squadron Six, flying anti-submarine, ship surveillance, and aerial mining, and ferret missions in the Yellow Sea, South China Sea, and the Formosa Straits. He attended the Navy Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Maryland, in 1954 and was subsequently assigned to the Electronics Test Division of the Naval Air Test Center, also at Patuxent. In that assignment he flew tests in every type of naval aircraft, including multi- and single-engine jet and propeller-driven fighters, attack planes, patrol bombers, transports, and seaplanes. From 1957 to 1959 he attended the Navy General Line School and the Navy Air Intelligence School and was then assigned as Air Intelligence Officer to the Aircraft Carrier, USS Hornet.

Overview:
WFAA's coverage includes an extensive webpage with video, slideshows, online user feedback pages and a "what witnesses saw" page, as well, at http://www.wfaa.com/ See an online shuttle enthusiasts' blog on FreeRepublic, which tracked the re-entry of the Columbia before during and after the incident: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/833885/posts This is such a remarkable way that the online experience sews together people in times like this. Some newspapers, such as the Washington Post, are allowing online readers to share their thoughts: Many sites did this after the 9-11 attacks. It turns the web into a big gathering place, which could be especially important on the weekend when people are not surrounded by others as they would be in a workplace. Here is a magnificent collection of Sunday's editorial cartoons from Daryl Cagle's Index: http://cagle.slate.msn.com/news/ShuttleColumbia/main.asp

    • Born: 9 March 1934 Birthplace: Klushino, Russia Died: 27 March 1968 (airplane crash) Best Known As: The first human in space
Gagarin flew into orbit aboard the Soviet spacecraft Vostok I on 12 April 1961, becoming the first man in space. He orbited the Earth once (his capsule was controlled from the ground) before returning for a safe landing in the Soviet Union roughly 90 minutes later. The 1961 flight made him an international hero; he was awarded the Order of Lenin and made a deputy of the Soviet parliament, the Supreme Soviet. The flight was also considered a political victory for the Soviet Union; the United States didn't put a man into space until Alan Shepard 's sub-orbital flight on 5 May 1961. Gagarin had graduated from the Soviet air force academy in 1957 and joined the cosmonaut corps in 1960. After his famous flight he remained in the cosmonaut corps and was killed while piloting an airplane on a training flight in 1968. On his way to the launch pad in 1961, Gagarin stopped to empty his bladder. The act became a tradition with subsequent cosmonauts, who urinate on the back tire of the transport bus before their flights... Gagarin was preceded into space by a Russian dog
