The criteria for determining who has achieved human spaceflight vary (see edge of space ). In the United States , people who travel above an altitude of 50 miles (approximately 80 kilometers) are designated as astronauts. The FAI defines spaceflight as over 100 km (approximately 62 miles). As of July 26 , a total of 445 humans had spent a total of over 28,000 crew-days (or a cumulative total of 76.7 years in space) in space including over 100 crew-days of spacewalks. 439 people qualify under the FAI definition. Those who have achieved this are said to hold astronaut wings . Astronauts from at least 34 countries have gone into space.

Crew training - General description
The contemporary world opinion, while welcoming the efforts of different states aimed at realization of manned space flights, still considers these efforts insufficient, over-bureaucratized and too slow.
At the same time, the decisive accelerator in this area is the attraction of private capital. Large private companies could closely cooperate with the state-owned space agencies in the area of space exploration. This first of all refers to companies specializing in the high technology and communication systems business. In own view, the future of manned space flights will only become brighter if they will be additionally financed by people and organizations willing to rationalize the expenses and to take risks that cannot be acceptable in state projects.
Thus, private scientific and experimental commercial flights of the man into the space are going to become an issue in the future that will arrive at the nearest time.
The market of non-governmental manned astronautics is very young yet. The more up-to-date is the basic training program for a cosmonaut/astronaut or a manned space flight participant (hereinafter referred to as the student) that is being offered to your interested attention.

But, which particular autographs do most of us collect? From my observations through the years, including watching eBay and various space auctions, I feel that most of us mainly concentrate on autographs of the early American astronauts, those who flew in space on Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz.

Unlike their colleages, active cosmonauts do not spend all their time at Star City, but remain working in production sites, laboratories, etc., keeping a mailbox at Star City. Delays, therefore, are considerably longer than known with Western astronauts. However, they have decreased remarkably compared to experiences in the 60s and 70s. Reply times of more than a year are exceptional as they are with western space participants. Retired cosmonauts particularly still take their time since requests are forwarded to them and then return to Star City where handling still takes some time.

How many astronauts have died exploring space? Have any Russians ever been killed in space?
    - Marie Ortega
The NASA Astronaut Memorial Wall includes the names of 24 astronauts who have given their lives in service of the space program. Of these, 17 were lost in space-related accidents and the remaining seven died in aircraft accidents. An additional eight cosmonauts have also perished during the Soviet/Russian space program. A brief biography of each of these lost pioneers is provided below. Valentin V. Bondarenko (Soviet Air Force) , training accident Bondarenko was an Air Force pilot selected for cosmonaut training in 1960. He was killed on 23 March 1961 while training in a ground-based spacecraft simulator. Fire broke out in the capsule, which was filled with a pure oxygen atmosphere, and he was unable to escape. CAPT Theodore C. Freeman (USAF) , aircraft accident CAPT Freeman had been an instructor training test pilots at the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. He had over 3,000 hours of flight time and was selected for the astronaut program in October 1963. He was to be trained to pilot an Apollo mission. Freeman died on 31 October 1964 during a routine flight aboard one of NASA's T-38 jet trainers. He was preparing to land near Houston when a snow goose struck the left side of the cockpit canopy. Shattered plexiglass entered both engines forcing Freeman to eject. However, his altitude was too low and the parachute had insufficient time to fully open. Freeman was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
