Astrogeology Program Maps Planets
The U.S. Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program has a rich history of participation in space exploration efforts and planetary mapping, starting in 1963 when the Flagstaff, Arizona, Field Center was founded as a research site for the new science of planetary geology. In Flagstaff, a team of more than 80 research scientists, cartographers, computer scientists, administrative staff, students, contractors, and volunteers work to support the space exploration program's efforts to explore, map, and understand our solar system. The program has participated in processing and analyzing data from various missions to the planetary bodies in our solar system, assisting in finding potential landing sites for exploration vehicles, mapping our neighboring planets and their moons, and conducting research to better understand the origins, evolutions, and geologic processes operating on these bodies. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Office of Solar System Exploration is the main support source for the Astrogeology Research Program.

With the successful landing of the two Mars exploration rovers, Spirit and Opportunity , Mars has once again commanded the attention of cartographers around the world. As of May 2004, both rovers have met their 100 percent “mission success” goals. With both rovers working at full capacity, the project was extended into September 2004. These two figures display the landing site locations of the two rovers using remotely sensed data. Two National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) satellites circling Mars

NASA's Mars Orbiter Makes Successful Course Correction
The spacecraft fired all six main thrusters for 15 seconds on Saturday, Aug. 27. The engine burn followed a 30-second burn of six smaller thrusters, which settled propellant in the craft's fuel tank for smoother flow. The spacecraft's orientation was adjusted prior to the burns to point the engines in the proper direction for the maneuver. The spacecraft returned to the regular cruise-phase attitude after the trajectory adjustment." Read more

Astrogeology 03 Home Page Last Update 07 May 2005 Dear Astrogeology 03 Students - Course materials can be downloaded using the links below. One of the ways we try to help students relieve the stress of taking an exam is to allow them to work on sample questions, many of which you will see on the actual exam. Face it, this is a science and we're not going to ask your opinion on the meaning of the term Oort Cloud - we're going to ask you what it is ! The following links allow you to download sample question files in .html format so that you can download the files and prepare for exams in our Geology 03 course. You might notice that the sly Professor has not given you the answers! No, instead I expect you to go to the bookstore, buy the textbook, and read it - then answer the questions (a sneaky ploy to get you to appreciate scholarship - remember, We Teach Success"). The first exam covers the Solar System, Geological Time, the Earth, Plate Tectonics, Minerals and Rocks, Igneous Processes, Asteroids, Meteorites, and Cratering Processes (Consult Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 13 and use the index and glossary at the back of the textbook to focus your study for questions). The second exam will cover the details of the Terrestrial Planets including the Earth's Moon (Consult Chapters 5, 6, 7, and 8). The
