ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials print this ... email this Overview Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs and airways that affects an estimated 14 million to 17 million people in the United States. Severe asthma is a serious health concern that can lead to respiratory failure and death. Asthma kills an estimated 5000 people a year in the United States and as many as 470,000 seek hospital treatment for asthma symptoms. Despite its prevalence, experts differ in the definition of the disease. Clinical authorities typically favor a broad, comprehensive definition. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute , for example, defines asthma as:
"a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways (which)…causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing, particularly at night or in the early morning…usually associated with widespread but variable airflow obstruction that is often reversible, either spontaneously or with treatment."
Organizations geared primarily toward the informational needs of patients usually promote, simpler, more "user-friendly" definitions. The

Asthma: A Concern for Minority Populations Overview Asthma is a growing concern in this country, particularly in inner-city African-American and Latino populations. Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by episodes of airflow obstruction. Symptoms of an asthma attack include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Asthma occurs in people who are predisposed to develop asthma because of genetic and environmental factors that determine susceptibility. A variety of "triggers" may initiate or worsen an asthma attack, including viral respiratory infections, exercise, and exposure to allergens or to airway irritants such as tobacco smoke and certain environmental pollutants. Once asthma sufferers learn what conditions prompt their attacks, they can take steps to control their environment and avoid these triggers. However, medical treatment with anti-inflammatory agents (especially inhaled steroids) and bronchodilators is usually necessary to prevent and control attacks. With optimal management, control of asthma is usually an attainable goal.

KidsHealth Kids Asthma Basics What's Asthma?
Asthma (say: az -muh) is a condition that affects a person's airways, which are also called breathing tubes or bronchial (say: brong -kee-ul) tubes. These tubes lead from the windpipe, or trachea (say: tray -kee-uh), into the lungs. For most kids, breathing is simple: They breathe in through their noses or mouths and the air goes into the windpipe. From there, it travels through the airways and into the lungs. But for kids with asthma, breathing can be a lot more difficult because their airways are very sensitive. An asthma flare-up, which some people call an asthma attack, happens when a person's airways get narrower and it becomes a lot harder for air to get in and out of the lungs. Sometimes the swollen airways produce extra mucus, which makes things pretty sticky, so it's easy to see why it's hard to breathe. In between flare-ups, a kid's breathing can be totally normal or seem that way. But during a flare-up, it can feel like the person is breathing through a straw. A kid with asthma may wheeze (a whistling sound when he or she breathes), cough, and feel tightness in the chest. An asthma flare-up can get worse and worse if a kid doesn't use asthma medicine. After an asthma flare-up, the airways almost always return to the way they were before, although it can take several days. Who Gets Asthma?

It is also for those who may be thinking of becoming a Breathing Therapist themselves. Hello my name is Michael A Clark, welcome to my site. I am a qualified Buteyko Therapist I also hold qualifications in Stress Management, counselling and Reiki. The Brisbane Medical Trials of 1996 compared two study groups. The group treated with Buteyko reported an astonishing 92% reduction in the use of Bronchodilators (Ventolins)! This compared to the other group who were treated with conventional treatment which showed no improvement. I was hooked! As quickly as possible I did the Butyeyko Course, passed my exam and completed the necessary case studies. In no time I was practising and found that by incorporating my Stress Consultancy experience I could in fact gain even better results.

Asthma Research Unit
The aim of the Unit is to produce high quality research in the treatment and management of patients with asthma. Until such a time as the laboratories produce a "cure" for asthma, we believe it is work such as ours that can best benefit the patient. By educating medical staff through dissemination of our findings we can help ensure that all patients with asthma receive the best possible care.
The Unit is supported by colleagues from different University departments including the Department of Applied Computing Department of Child Health at Ninewells Department of Mathematics , Department of Respiratory Medicine and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health
The Unit carries out work on behalf of the General Practitioners Airways Group , a network of GP's from throughout Britain with a special interest in the care of patients with asthma, and is funded through grants awarded by charitable, government organisations and industrial sponsors.

http://www.acrn.org/

History
The Asthma Clinical Research Network (ACRN) was established in 1993 by the Division of Lung Diseases (DLD), National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). The objectives of this multi-center program are to conduct multiple well designed clinical trials for rapid evaluation of new and existing therapeutic approaches to asthma and to disseminate laboratory and clinical findings to the health care community. From 1993 to 2003, ACRN consisted of six Clinical Centers and one Data Coordinating Center (DCC). In September 2003, after a national competition, NHLBI re-awarded ACRN for another 5 years with eight Clinical Centers and one DCC to continue pursuit of the same objectives.
Organization
Administratively, the main governing body of the ACRN is its Steering Committee. The Steering Committee consists of the Principal Investigator from each Clinical Center, the Principal Investigator from the DCC, a Chairman who is not an Investigator, and a Project Scientist from the NHLBI. The following figure displays the locations of the ACRN participants. Responsibilities of the Steering Committee include the following:
  • identifying important research questions selecting topics for investigation designing and developing protocols facilitating the conduct and monitoring of protocols participating in the analysis and interpretation of data preparing manuscripts assuring timely reporting of study results to the scientific community
  • Prior to implementation, an ACRN protocol must be approved by its Protocol Review Committee (PRC). The PRC consists of clinical scientists, basic scientists, and biostatisticians who are not associated with any other ACRN activity. After a protocol has been approved, patients are recruited, enrolled, and monitored at the eight Clinical Centers. The DCC provides overall scientific, data management, and administrative coordination during the progress of the trial. The Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) is another independent committee whose function is to oversee ongoing trials. The DSMB is empowered to stop an ACRN trial for any reason concerning safety and/or efficacy, and it also reviews the final outcomes of the study.
