DC School Asthma and Allergy Initiative
The DC School Asthma and Allergy Initiative is a partnership between SchoolAsthmaAllergy.com, a Web site funded by Schering Corporation, designed to support those caring for children with asthma and allergies, and prominent healthcare organizations in the Washington, DC area. Asthma is the third leading cause of preventable hospitalizations in the United States, with approximately 470,000 hospitalizations and more than 5,000 deaths a year. Nearly 5 million children have asthma. Asthma is a leading cause of missed school days, accounting for 10 million absences per year. Allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic disease in the United States, costing the healthcare system over 18 billion dollars annually. The prevalence of asthma and other allergic diseases continues to grow, probably reflecting both increased exposures and enhanced responses to allergens. Given the magnitude of the problem, the DC School Asthma and Allergy Initiative was created to offer specific, concrete, ongoing support to those caring for school-aged children with asthma and allergies.

Asthma (AZ-muh) is a chronic disease that affects your airways, which are the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). The inflammation (IN-fla-MAY-shun) makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things to which you are allergic or find irritating. When the airways react, they get narrower and less air flows through to your lung tissues. This causes symptoms like wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing.
Asthma cannot be cured, but for most patients it can be controlled so that you have only minimal and infrequent symptoms and you can live an active life. So, if you have asthma, taking care of it is an important part of your life. Controlling your asthma means staying away from things that bother your airways and taking medicines as directed by your doctor. By controlling your asthma every day, you can prevent serious symptoms and take part in all activities. If your asthma is not well controlled, you are likely to have symptoms that can make you miss school or work and keep you from doing things you enjoy. Asthma is one of the leading causes of children missing school.
When you experience a worsening of your asthma symptoms, it is called an asthma episode or attack. In an asthma attack, muscles around the airways tighten up, making the airway openings narrower so less air can flow through. Inflammation increases and the airways become more swollen and narrow. Cells in the airways also make more mucus than usual. This extra mucus also narrows the airways. These changes cause the symptoms of asthma and make it harder to breathe. Asthma attacks are not all the same-some are worse than others. In a severe asthma attack, the airways can close so much that not enough oxygen gets to vital organs. This condition is a medical emergency. People can die from severe asthma attacks.

Feature Story
Half the cases of early childhood asthma are due to secondhand cigarette smoke
About half of the cases of early childhood asthma, chronic bronchitis, and wheezing are due to exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke, according to a study by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. It shows that 38 percent of children aged 2 months to 5 years in a representative sample of the U.S. population (7,680) are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in the home, and 24 percent of these children were exposed by maternal smoking during pregnancy. The impact of secondhand smoke was seen at 20 or more cigarettes per day. Children 2 months to 2 years of age who were exposed to this level of household smoke were 2.5 times as likely to develop chronic bronchitis and nearly 3 times as likely to have had three or more episodes of wheezing. Children 2 months to 5 years of age were twice as apt to develop asthma. Children 2 months to 2 years of age exposed to maternal smoke in the womb were twice as apt to develop chronic bronchitis and twice as likely to have three or more episodes of wheezing. Those 2 months to 5 years of age with prenatal exposure were nearly twice (1.8) as apt to develop asthma. Peter J. Gergen, M.D., M.P.H., of AHCPR's Center for Primary Care Research, and his colleagues estimate that an extra 160,000 cases of asthma per year, 79,000 cases of bronchitis, and 172,000 cases of wheezing are due to ETS. However, in this study exposure to ETS was not significantly associated with the prevalence of upper respiratory infection, pneumonia, or cough.

Scientists using dust and housecleaning to fight asthma epidemic
CLARKSVILLE, Maryland (AP) Scientists came into little Daniel Weiss' sunny suburban home armed with a special vacuum cleaner: The 7-year-old's bed, stuffed animal collection, even under the refrigerator no place was spared in the hunt for dust. The dust holds clues to Daniel's asthma traces of substances that trigger allergic reactions that send him gasping to the emergency room. In a lab, researchers wash the finely grained dust with antibodies that stain those microscopic allergens bright green, to measure how much lurks in Daniel's home.

Study: Regular use of inhaled steroids can save lives
(AP) Asthma sufferers who regularly use steroid inhalers to ease their breathing problems also lower their risk of dying from the disease, a large new study concludes. Doctors have been uncertain until now whether treating asthma with inhaled steroids actually saves lives.
