Project NEAR NEAR Lands on Eros Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Credit NASA with another milestone in space exploration: On February 12, 2001, a spacecraft landed on the surface of an asteroid for the first time in history. After a year spent orbiting the asteroid 433 Eros, the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft made a controlled descent to the surface. But what exactly is an asteroid? And what was the NEAR Shoemaker mission about? Photo courtesy NASA/JHUAPL NEAR descends to the surface of 433 Eros. In this edition of HowStuffWorks , we will examine these tiny bodies of our solar system and the successful mission to study them.

Current Map Of The Solar System
The image below is an up to date map of the solar system displaying the orbits of the terrestrial planets and the estimated position of thousands of known asteroids. This diagram is missing comets, space probes and, of course, the undiscovered asteroids. Even conservative estimates would suggest that for every asteroid on a dangerous Earth-Approaching orbit there are hundreds more which have yet to be discovered. There are over 300 known objects on Earth-crossing orbits, the majority of which are potentially capable of causing death and destruction on a scale unheard of in human history. The terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) are shown on the diagram by Cyan or White squares, and their orbits are represented by the blue ellipses around the Sun (the yellow dot at the centre). The Earth is highlighted because of its special importance to us. Small green points mark the location of asteroids which do not approach close to the Earth right now. This does not exclude the possibility that they will do so in the future but generally we can consider the Earth to be safe from these for the near future. Yellow objects (with the exception of the one in the middle which we astronomers call the Sun ;-) are Earth approaching asteroids which are called Amors after the first one discovered. Amors have orbits which come close to the Earth but they don't cross the Earth's orbit. However, their orbits are close enough to the Earth that they could potentially be perturbed by the influence of the planets and begin to cross the Earth's orbit in a short time. There are over 300 known objects on such orbits.

Gravitator
About Gravitator is an interactive realtime gravity simulator designed to simulate large quantities of objects. It allows you to simulate galaxies, asteroid rings etc. This is possible by having 2 kinds of objects, light and heavy. Light objects don't attract any other object, while the heavy objects attract other objects. Gravitator comes with an interactive editor of the world. It can calculate stable orbit for given objects and generate complex objects such as spiral galaxies. You can also download gravitator_daemon, a non-interactive program used to simulate gravity and store the results in a file. This file can be later replayed with gravitator. Introduction
You're in space.
You want to get home.
There are asteroids.
You don't want to hit them. Input Input to this problem will consist of a (non-empty) series of up to 100 data sets. Each data set will be formatted according to the following description, and there will be no blank lines separating data sets. A single data set has 5 components:
  • Start line - A single line, " START N ", where 1 <= N
  • Slice list - A series of N slices. Each slice is an N x N matrix representing a horizontal slice through the asteroid field. Each position in the matrix will be one of two values:
O ' - (the letter "oh") Empty space
      X ' - (upper-case) Asteroid present
  • Starting Position - A single line, " A B C ", denoting the <A,B,C> coordinates of your craft's starting position. The coordinate values will be integers separated by individual spaces.
  • Target Position - A single line, " D E F ", denoting the <D,E,F> coordinates of your target's position. The coordinate values will be integers separated by individual spaces.

Is it worth more than a few quarters
Recently it seems that more games has been trying to jump on the classic-game-conversion bandwagon, a fad that started around the time that Hasbro made some big bucks with their Frogger conversion. Some conversions, like Activision's Battlezone , took a few "creative liberties" and added a whole slew of new technology available in this day and age, while others, like Hasbro's Frogger or Centipede stayed relatively close to their predecessors. Asteroids , Activision's latest classic conversion, leans more towards the latter - there are the obvious improvements in graphics, and sound, but the game's basic gameplay stays relatively the same. Now, if you aren't aware of how Asteroids is played, well, I represent the entire gaming community when I hang my head in despair.

    1. Introduction
Typical Hilda asteroids are captured in the 3/2 resonance of mean motion with respect to that of Jupiter. In numerical studies on the long-period evolution of Hilda-type orbits Schubart (1982, 1991) has introduced three parameters that appear to characterize an orbit during very long intervals of time, in analogy to the proper elements of orbits of non-resonant asteroids. The following sections present values of such parameters for recently numbered or corrected Hilda orbits. Some of these orbits correspond to cases of special interest. Here the abbreviations for the 3 characteristic parameters of Schubart(1982) are:
    Epm, Ip, and Ampl.

More Moons Around Earth? Its Not So Loony
    By Robin Lloyd

    Senior Science Writer
    posted: 11:42 am ET
    29 October 1999
Earth has a second moon, of sorts, and could have many others, according to three astronomers who did calculations to describe orbital motions at gravitational balance points in space that temporarily pull asteroids into bizarre orbits near our planet. The 3-mile-wide (5-km) satellite, which takes 770 years to complete a horseshoe-shaped orbit around Earth, is called Cruithne and will remain in a suspended state around Earth for at least 5,000 years. Cruithne, discovered in 1986, and then found in 1997 to have a highly eccentric orbit, cannot be seen by the naked eye, but scientists working at Queen Mary and Westfield College in London were intrigued enough with its peregrinations to come up with mathematical models to describe its path. That led them to theorize that the model could explain the movement of other objects captured at the gravitational balance points that exist between all planets and the sun.

    Threat of killer asteroids downgraded
Hits that could destroy cities predicted every 1,000 years
    By Richard Stenger

Artist's concept of a killer asteroid strike Story Tools
RELATED Nature University of Western Ontario University of Arizona (CNN) Space boulders big enough to wipe out a major city slam into the Earth about once every 1,000 years, much less frequently than previously thought, scientists said Wednesday. The revised calculations come from an unprecedented examination of years of data from U.S. Defense Department satellites that scour the ground for nuclear explosions. Previous ground-based observations had suggested that asteroids or comets of comparable size pound the planet once every two or three centuries. "This new method of obtaining information redefines our range of knowledge about how and when asteroids may hit the Earth," said University of Western Ontario astronomer Peter Brown, lead author of a report in the November 21 edition of the journal Nature. During the past 8.5 years, the military orbiters spotted almost 300 light bursts high in the atmosphere caused by the explosions of meteors between one and 10 meters (3.3 and 33 feet) in diameter.

High flyers look for fabled asteroids near sun
    By Richard Stenger (CNN)
Artistic rendering of a vulcanoid Story Tools
(CNN) Taking high-altitude spins in a fighter jet in the days leading up to the September equinox, scientists looked for a legendary group of asteroids that might circle the sun closer than Mercury. The innermost region of the solar system has been the subject of considerable debate since the late 19th Century, when many astronomers concluded that perturbations in Mercury's orbit must be caused by a hidden planet, dubbed "Vulcan" after the Roman god of fire and metallurgy. Within decades, Einstein's theory of relativity explained away the gravitational glitches, but theoretical models still indicated that perhaps hundreds of space boulders up to about 20 miles (30 kilometers) in diameter could survive between Mercury and the sun. The possibility tantalized Alan Stern and Dan Durda of the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in Boulder, Colorado, who last week soared to nearly 50,000 feet (15,000 meters), snapping pictures of promising space regions to find the fabled space rocks.
