The story of the discovery of the impact crater that doomed the dinosaurs. Nice description of how science works in the real world. A meteor is a bright streak of light in the sky (a "shooting star" or a "falling star") produced by the entry of a small meteoroid into the Earth's atmosphere. If you have a dark clear sky you will probably see a few per hour on an average night; during one of the annual meteor showers you may see as many as 100/hour. Very bright meteors are known as fireballs; if you see one please report it Meteor showers can be very impressive. Samuel Taylor Coleridge 's famous lines from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
The upper air burst into life!
    And a hundred fire-flags sheen,
To and fro they were hurried about!
And to and fro, and in and out,
The wan stars danced between And the coming wind did roar more loud

: Big news (kinda). I´m pretty sure most of you have noticed OU hasn´t been updated for a long long time. We´ve decided not to waste time and focus our effort in helping Chris Laurel out. He´s doing an amazing job with Celestia and we´ll try to contribute as much as we can. I´m not saying OU is dead but it´s very unlikely you´ll see any update soon. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GO DOWNLOAD CELESTIA Sep 12, 2001 : Hello, as Slashdot has put it before: Normally we don't post this. But in this case... We (all of us behind OU) state our solidarity, support and respect to the people in the United States, New York and Washington. Our thoughts are with the killed, the injured and the shocked. This is the time for the civilized world to stand together. In these hours we are all americans. Axel Jul 24, 2001 : Hi folks! This is another incredible thing for Raul and me. We reached 150.000 pageviews (= visitors in our case) until we started OpenUniverse. We'd like to thank you. Axel Jun 29, 2001

O n the first day of January 1801, Giuseppe Piazzi discovered an object which he first thought was a new comet. But after its orbit was better determined it was clear that it was not a comet but more like a small planet. Piazzi named it Ceres, after the Sicilian goddess of grain. Three other small bodies were discovered in the next few years (Pallas, Vesta, and Juno). By the end of the 19th century there were several hundred. M ore than 7000 asteroids have been discovered. Several hundred more are discovered each year. There are undoubtedly hundreds of thousands more that are too small to be seen from the Earth . There are 26 known asteroids larger than 200 km in diameter. Our census of the largest ones is now fairly complete: we probably know 99% of the asteroids larger than 100 km in diameter. Of those in the 10 to 100 km range we have cataloged about half. But we know very few of the smaller ones; perhaps as many as a million 1 km sized asteroids may exist. T he total mass of all the asteroids is less than that of the Moon Ida and 951 Gaspra were photographed by the Galileo spacecraft on its way to Jupiter. The
