Asteroids - The Classic Video Game of the '70's
Here is an old time favorite that was loved by many, and still is judging by the high volume of visitors! Only problem was, me being a kid back then, I couldn't afford to pay a quarter a game. Fortunately for you, this one is free so you can play to your hearts content. Although this isn't the most educational game on this site it isn't completely devoid of educational value. You must be able to prioritize and track multiple targets, forcing your brain into "hyperthink" mode. You also must learn to lead your target. And if the planet Earth is ever attacked by a swarm of alien guided projectiles, your services will be in instant demand. Wait for the applet and sounds to finish loading, this may take a minute or two. The Asteroids game screen will show "Game Over - 'S' to Start" once everything is ready. In the meantime you can review the instructions below. Note: If Asteroids doesn't seem to be responding to key presses, click your mouse pointer in the game area. Sometimes you might have to press your shift button while clicking on your "Reload" button. That will force this page to reload completely. Playing the Game Use the keyboard controls described below to maneuver your ship, destroying as many asteroids as you can while avoiding collision with them. Also watch for the flying saucers armed with guided missiles.

Play this game with extreme caution! Can be very habit-forming! Use the keyboard controls described below to maneuver your ship, destroying as many asteroids as you can while avoiding collision with them. Also watch for the flying saucers armed with guided missles. If you warp into hyperspace, your ship will momentarily disappear then reappear on another part of the screen, gradually fading in. During this time the ship is invunerable. Likewise, when your ship is destroyed, a new one will appear in the center of the screen. You can still maneuver and fire during this time so if you are in imminent danger, you have a couple of seconds to get out of it. How To Use

    Asteroids
Asteroids are small, rocky objects which orbit the Sun along with all the other planets. They are also commonly called minor planets (and rarely as planetoids ) because they are considerably smaller than ordinary planets. Astronomers estimate that there are more than 100,000 asteroids in our solar system although only about 8000 have been cataloged as of mid-1997.

    • This image of (951) Gaspra was taken by the Galileo spacecraft in October, 1991.
The very first asteroid, called (1) Ceres , was discovered by accident in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi. While making a map of faint stars, Piazzi noticed one object whose position moved over the course of several nights. Careful mathematical analysis later revealed that this faint object orbits the Sun at an average distance of 2.77 Astronomical Units with a period of 4.6 years. Piazzi named it Ceres (pronounced SEE-reez) after the Roman goddess of agriculture. Since this first discovery, many such asteroids have been found in a similar manner by searching for faint objects which move relative to the background stars. Newly discovered asteroids are initially given a designation by date, and are only officially named and numbered (in order of discovery) after their orbital properties have been accurately determined. Nearly every conceivable human name is now associated with an asteroid, check here to see if you share your name with a minor planet!

Imagine living out in space, perhaps on another planet or a spaceship. You would be able to meet different creatures that were previously unheard of and see colors that are unknown to mankind. Whether or not we’d actually be able to live in space, humans will definitely try to find a way to live on some kind of spacecraft outside the solar system. Astronomy is defined as the study of space beyond Earth. There are many different types of objects in the universe, many of which we haven’t discovered or have yet to understand. Our own solar system is composed of the planets and their satellites also known as moons, comets, meteors, asteroids, and, most importantly, the sun. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun in our solar system. At first, scientists thought that the planet was very similar to the moon, but it is hard for them to observe Mercury because it is so close to the sun. When the first pictures of Mercury were taken on March 29, 1974, astronomers did in fact find features similar to the moon. Scientists were surprised at how many craters the planet has, which are similar to the other ones on all the planets and moons in the inner solar system. The scientists also found cliffs on Mercury. The planet is 4878 kilometers in diameter and takes 88 days to completely orbit the sun.

August 11, 2005 Beginning in early September 2005, the Japanese Hayabusa spacecraft will rendezv ous with near-Earth asteroid (25143) Itokawa . Itokawa, a 600 meter sized, potato-shaped asteroid, is named after Hideo Itokawa, a Japanese rocket pioneer. Although the primary objectives of the Hayabusa mission are to test new technologies, the mission will also provide a wealth of scientific returns. For the three month period from September through November 2005, the science instruments on board the Hayabusa spacecraft will undertake an intensive study of near-Earth asteroid Itokawa. After closely observing the asteroid for several weeks, a few pellets will be fired from the spacecraft at close range into the asteroid's surface and about a gram of the pellet's impact ejecta will be collected into a sample capsule. This capsule will then be brought back to Earth and parachuted into the Australia outback in June 2007 so that some of the asteroid's surface minerals can be studied in Earth-based laboratories. This will be the first asteroid sample return mission. FULL STORY

NASA to coordinate detection, tracking of asteroids and comets
    July 15, 1998
Web posted at: 11:09 AM EDT (1109 GMT) PASADENA, Calif. (AP) It will be up to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to detect, track and study asteroids and comets that could strike Earth. NASA's new Near-Earth Object Program Office will follow at least 90 percent of the 2,000 estimated Earth-approaching asteroids and comets that are at least two-thirds of a mile wide, the space agency announced Tuesday. Donald Yeomans, a JPL expert in computing asteroid orbits, will head the new office. "These are objects that are difficult to detect because of their relatively small size, but are large enough to cause global effects if one hit Earth," he said. In March, Yeomans and colleague Paul Chodas debunked a report from the International Astronomical Union that an asteroid was headed to within 30,000 miles of Earth's center and could hit in October 2028.

Valles Marineris, called the Grand Canyon of Mars, dominates the planet's southern highlands. Story Tools
RELATED Science magazine Mars exploration (NASA) BIG DITCH Valles Marineris is more than four times longer and deeper than the Grand Canyon. The red planet trench is 2,500 miles long and up to four miles deep. (CNN) The authors of a new study say that while enormous surges of water carved out sprawling networks of valleys on Mars eons ago, the young red planet was hardly a steamy greenhouse with long-lasting oceans, as some scientists have theorized. Researchers with NASA and the University of Colorado say the canyons most likely were formed during brief bouts of torrential rains, when asteroid and comet chunks collided with Mars and unleashed frozen water. They propose that the flurry of impacts produced periodic layers of hot debris that blanketed the surface, warming it above the freezing point of water for decades or centuries at a stretch.

    Orbits
Origin Threat of impact Quick quiz: How many planets orbit our Sun? If you said nine, you're shy by several thousand. Scientists consider asteroids to be minor planets - some are hundreds of miles wide (and seldom round). Orbits Most, but not all, orbit the sun in an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The huge gravitational pull of Jupiter accelerated these asteroids to more than three miles per second too fast to prevent violent collisions. Otherwise, they might have joined up to form "real" planets. When asteroids collide, fragments sometimes are sent on a collision course with Earth and become meteors.
Size and makeup The vast majority of asteroids are small, compared with a large one like Ida, this 32-mile-long chunk of stone and iron that was photographed in 1993 by the Galileo spacecraft. Though we normally think of asteroids as crater-makers, they are typically pockmarked with their own impact craters. Scientists divide asteroids into two groups, based on how they appear in infrared images: light and dark. The lightest-looking asteroids are rocky bodies with lots of iron and nickel, and they resemble lunar rocks. The darkest asteroids have high quantities of hydrated minerals and carbon.
