Astronomy Basics UNIVERSE – ORIGIN Astronomy: It is built on Greek root astron = star and nomos = arrangement, order or law. Astronomy, therefore, is the study of arrangement of stars. It is the branch of Physics that studies celestial bodies and the Universe as a whole. ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE: The Big Bang, that gigantic explosion occurred some 15 billion years ago, is not only the beginning of our own Universe, space, matter and time, but also the generator of all mass. This mass of interstellar cloud of dust and gas (solar nebula) collapsed under its own gravity. The result is, this collapse of molecular clouds vaporized the dusts and the fireball expanded, cooled and compressed in the middle and developed into a Protostar, leaving the rest of the gas to rotate around it. This cooling effect generated the most basic elements, hydrogen and helium. In due course most of the gases orbiting the forming star flowed inwards towards the star and became part and parcel of it. However, the gases are rotating and therefore due to centrifugal force some of the gases stayed away from the forming star and formed a disc capable of building itself naturally around the forming star. This disc gives away its energy through radiation and cools off into metals, rocks and ice. The dust particles collide and generate bigger particles and this process goes on till the particle builds into the size of a small rocky boulder known as asteroids. Once the bigger of these particles become really large enough to have its own gravity, the growth zooms! Because of gravity, they absorb smaller particles in their orbit and grow substantially. This process, after millions of years got us 10 or more planets in regular habits forming the solar system.

I. INTRODUCTION (WHAT IS BIOGEOPLANETOLOGY?)
This curriculum unit presents an interdisciplinary approach to the study of science, bringing together information from astronomy, earth science and ecology. The unit, written as part of the seminar “Outstanding Problems in Contemporary Astronomy and Cosmology,” addresses the question, “how is and how has life on Earth been influenced by events occurring in our Solar System?” More specifically, I present information on the relation between asteroids, comets and meteorites and life on Earth. I review current scientific thinking about how our Solar System’s asteroids and comets interacted with a young Earth to create the necessary conditions for the origin of life, and how meteoritic impacts have altered the evolution of life through Earth history. Sample teaching strategies are presented to suggest ways of presenting the subject matter to students. In developing this topic, I have drawn on my deep interest in ecology and an interest in earth science, including the fields of paleontology and mass extinction theory. The Teachers Institute seminar has been an excellent vehicle for learning more about astronomy and cosmology, especially solar system astronomy and planetary science. It has given me an opportunity to read and talk about issues in astronomy and to combine pertinent information from the fields of astronomy, earth science, and ecology.

Description
Asteroids was inspired, in a roundabout way, by the seminal Spacewar , the first computer-based video game. In the early a stand-up arcade game version was produced as Space Wars , which included a number of optional versions and added a floating asteroid as a visual device. Asteroids is essentially a one-player version of Spacewar, featuring the "wedge" ship from the original and promoting the asteroids to be the main opponent.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An asteroid is a small, solid object in our Solar System , orbiting the Sun . An asteroid is an example of a minor planet (or planetoid ), which are much smaller than planets . Most asteroids are believed to be remnants of the protoplanetary disc which were not incorporated into planets during the system's formation. Some asteroids have moons . The vast majority of the asteroids are within the main asteroid belt , with elliptical orbits between those of Mars and Jupiter This picture of 433 Eros shows the view looking from one end of the asteroid across the gouge on its underside and toward the opposite end. Features as small as 35 m across can be seen.

  • Definition Asteroids in Earth's Solar System Asteroid classification edit
    Definition
The term "asteroid", meaning star-like (from the Greek asteroeides aster "star" + -eidos "form, shape"), was coined in by Sir William Herschel shortly after Olbers discovered the second one, 2 Pallas , in late March of the same year, to describe their star-like appearance; the other then-known planets all show discs, by comparison. He also applied that term to the small moons of the giant planets . The first scientific paper to use the word in its title was published in by Erman The exact definition of an asteroid is unsettled. The term "minor planet" (or "planetoid") carries no strong suggestion about the composition of the object or its general location in the solar system, and some argue that not every minor planet should be called an "asteroid".

Our solar system is an oasis of light, heat, and life in the cold reaches of the Milky Way Galaxy. It consists of a central star the Sun and its family of nine planets, more than 100 moons, millions of rocky asteroids, and billions of icy comets Recent discoveries prove that our solar system is not alone. Astronomers have discovered planets orbiting several other stars. But current technology cannot reveal Earth-like planets the planets that are most likely to harbor life . As far as we know, then, Earth is the galaxy's only inhabited planet. Sun

    Is the Sky Falling?
A scientific consensus agrees that cosmic impacts have played a major role in Earth history and that they continue to pose a significant threat today. But there is a tremendous difference in the estimated dangers, stretching up to, or even over, the line that separates legitimate science from pseudoscience. Ten recent trade books are reviewed that span a broad range in interpretations. David Morrison As the millennium approaches, the media are playing up asteroid and comet impacts. Ten popular-level books were published in 1995 and 1996 dealing with the dangers of cosmic impacts, and now we are seeing a spate of television and movie productions, both factual and fictional, that describe the impact threat. It is easy to dismiss all this as media hype and millennial madness, but it would be a mistake to do so. While some books and films may be motivated by a desire to milk public credulity for a quick buck, most are serious efforts to inform the public about a real danger that is recognized by the scientific community. In this article, I summarize the background for the recent interest in impact catastrophes and then provide a comparative review of the current trade books that deal with this topic.

  • About Asteroids - Asteroid Belt
  • Asteroids in the News
  • Asteroid Prophecy Asteroids are material left over from the formation of the solar system. One theory suggests that they are the remains of a planet that was destroyed in a massive collision long ago. More likely, asteroids are material that never coalesced into a planet. In fact, if the estimated total mass of all the asteroids was gathered into a single object, the object would be less than 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) across - less than half the diameter of the Moon. Thousands of asteroids have been identified from Earth. It is estimated that 100,000 are bright enough to eventually be photographed through Earth based telescopes. Much of our understanding about asteroids comes from examining pieces of space debris that fall to the surface of Earth. Asteroids that are on a collision course with Earth are called meteoroids. When a meteoroid strikes our atmosphere at high velocity, friction causes this chunk of space matter to incinerate in a streak of light known as a meteor. If the meteoroid does not burn up completely, what's left strikes Earth's surface and is called a meteorite. One of the best places to look for meteorites is the ice cap of Antarctica. Of all the meteorites examined, 92.8 percent are composed of silicate (stone), and 5.7 percent are composed of iron and nickel; the rest are a mixture of the three materials. Stony meteorites are the hardest to identify since they look very much like terrestrial rocks.
