Flashteroids Version 1.2
. This is the second fully featured release, complete with "arcade" mode and an online hall of fame. Once in the game, you'll find a feedback page, so please send any comments or ideas you have for future versions.
Inspiration - Many thanks to James Shaughnessy, creator of Gravitation (Playstation) for the inspiration behind this game.
How to play
You control your ship using the arrow keys on your keyboard. Use up or down to thrust, left to rotate anti-clockwise and right to rotate clockwise. Press control to fire. The objective of each level is to hit seven targets that appear in sequence, without colliding with any of the scenery, in as little time possible. The hard levels feature anti-aircraft guns and missile launchers just to make it a bit more taxing. If you run low on fuel, you can land back at your base to re-fuel. Whilst on the base you have a shield to protect you from any incoming fire.
System Requirements and Troubleshooting
To play Flashteroids , you need macromedia flash player (version 5 or later) installed in your web browser. This comes pre-installed on many computers so it's likely that you already have it. Flashteroids will tell you if you don't. If you need to install flash player

Recreated for your retrospective pleasure, these classic arcade games should stir up a few memories of twiddling with joysticks as a kid. Play the Flash games online or download the free source code. Space Invaders The grandaddy retro game. Wobbling aliens, ray guns and groovy sound effects a-plenty.
* featuring high scores. Pac-Man The one and only classic arcade game starring a pill-popping yellow blob with a mouth.
* featuring high scores. Tic-Tac-Toe AKA Noughts and Crosses, but made in the old skool stylee, like something out of the '80s film WarGames Hexxagon Like a radioactive and slighlty wonky version of Othello. And no, Shakespeare has nothing to do with it. Tetris Flex your tessellation muscle and get those falling blocks into place sharpish. Very addictive yet totally futile.
* featuring high scores. Snake You've wasted your mobile phone batteries playing this game, so play it on-line instead!
* featuring high scores. Simon This one will test your memory to the limit, if not your sanity. Green, two yellows, blue, three reds and... errr...

Coming soon the ultimate extinction machines?
4 NOV 1998 Credit the blasted-from-space movies Deep Impact and Armageddon. Or blame the one-day scare from March, 1998, when headlines warned that a beefy asteroid could zoom within 30,000 kilometers of Earth or even sledgehammer our tender green planet in 2028. Within a day, egg-bespattered astronomers used 1990 data to issue a revised estimate. It's safe to say that the asteroid will miss us by a good 600,000 kilometers about twice the distance of the moon. Still, the confluence of events has put The Why Files in an asteroidal frame of mind. Nobody knows the destruction that would result from a collision with one of these sub-planetary objects, but the evidence points to sudden, catastrophic and global damage. You could say it's pretty amazing that 1998 turned out to be a boom year for asteroids. Unlike planets, these misshapen agglomerations of rock and debris are not named for ancient gods. Instead they must answer to clunky handles like "1997 YF11" or "1998 ML14"). Asteroids are also far punier than planets: Ceres, the largest, is about 1,000 kilometers in diameter, but most are under a kilometer across. Most asteroids orbit between Mars and Jupiter, crashing into each other in a silent version of 3-D bumper cars that slowly grinds them to bits.

ASTEROIDS
Introduction
Near-Earth Asteroids
(NEA)
Asteroids and Dinosaurs ... Web Links Asteroids ASTEROIDS Asteroid 253 Mathilde, a Near-Earth Asteroid photographed by NASA's NEAR (Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous) mission in June 1997. Mathilde is about 60 km in diameter and orbits in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids are rocky or metallic objects, most of which orbit the Sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter . A few asteroids approach the Sun more closely. None of the asteroids have atmospheres. Asteroids are also known as planetoids or minor planets. THE ASTEROID BELT The asteroid belt is a doughnut-shaped concentration of asteroids orbiting the Sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, closer to the orbit of Mars. Most asteroids orbit from between 186 million to 370 million miles (300 million to 600 million km or 2 to 4 AU) from the Sun. The asteroids in the asteroid belt have a slightly elliptical orbit. The time for one revolution around the Sun varies from about three to six Earth years. The strong gravitational force of the planet Jupiter shepherds the asteroid belt, pulling the asteroids away from the Sun, keeping them from careening into the inner planets.

How Asteroids Work

Table of Contents Introduction to How Asteroids Work What is an Asteroid? Project NEAR NEAR Lands on Eros Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Credit NASA with another milestone in space exploration: On February 12, 2001, a spacecraft landed on the surface of an asteroid for the first time in history. After a year spent orbiting the asteroid 433 Eros, the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft made a controlled descent to the surface. But what exactly is an asteroid? And what was the NEAR Shoemaker mission about? Photo courtesy NASA/JHUAPL NEAR descends to the surface of 433 Eros. In this edition of HowStuffWorks , we will examine these tiny bodies of our solar system and the successful mission to study them.
