Abstract The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how assistive technology can be incorporated into computer science as a valid method of demonstrating basic computer science principles, human-computer interaction methods, and social, legal, and ethical issues in computing. 1.0 Introduction One of the earliest depictions of “high-tech” assistive technology in popular entertainment is from the original pilot show for the TV series Star Trek (later incorporated into the episode “The Menagerie”). [18] In it the first captain of the Enterprise, Christopher Pike, has suffered an injury so crippling that he has no control of his body whatsoever, although his cognitive abilities are entirely intact. He can communicate solely through a combination light and tone signal, which he can flash on briefly.

What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology is any tool that aids a person with a disability in completing their live's daily activities. Tools can be as simple as spell check for a poor speller to an adjustable keyboard for a person with fine motor problems. BVSD's Assistive Technology team is designed to assist students in school with their academic pursuits.
What is the Assistive Technology Team?
State Level - The Colorado Department of Education developed State Wide Assistive, Augmentative, Alternative Communication (SWAAAC) Teams. These teams are designed to assist students with disabilities in public schools with their academic pursuits. Local Level - The BVSD Assistive Tech. Team (formerly known as the BVSD SWAAAC Team) is comprised of an occupational therapist, speech language therapist, and special education teacher. We are available to visit schools to talk with teachers and parents about students in special education programs. We offer ideas, both low and high tech., to help students with the learning process. We assist with computer and environmental access, alternative communication, and specialized software for students from those with learning disabilities to those with significant cognitive and/or physical disabilities. We will lend tools from our library to specific students for an evaluation period (or longer if needed) or set up trial periods with various manufacturers. If a tool is found academically helpful, sources of funding will be pursued.

Assistive Technology Devices and Services
People who use a wheelchair often have needs for other kinds of assistive technology devices in addition to their manual and power wheelchair. Many of those kinds of devices as categorized as Assistive Devices or Adaptive Equipment for the Activities of Daily Living. On WheelchairNet an extensive listing of these kinds of devices can be found within Products and Services as ADL Products. A related category of devices are referred to as Assistive Technology Devices. These devices use electronics or microprocessors and are able to accomplish more sophisticated daily living tasks. In some cases they compensate for an impairment such as loss of speech in other cases they modify how another kind of technology such as a personal computer is used. These products are also listed in Products and Services as Other Assistive Technology The following resources on this page are intended to help consumers, parents, therapists, teachers and others find the resources they might need. These resources can help with understanding the function of assistive technology devices and how they can contribute to increased choice and control of the activities of every day life.

Needs, Knowledge, Barriers and Uses of Assistive Technology by Persons with Cognitive Disabilities is designed to provide a broad-scale overview of how persons with cognitive disabilities and their caregivers respond to assistive technologies, including those in current use, abandoned technologies, and characteristics and features of future technologies. This study will provide critical qualitative and quantitative information for the development teams, with emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease (AD), developmental disabilities (DD), and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Development Activities
D1. Design, Implementation and Deployment of Context Aware Technologies for Persons with Cognitive Disabilities Residing in Community Living Environments
The goal of this project is successful deployment of a socio-technical system that supports and documents the activities of residents and caregivers in one of the community living homes of Imagine! Colorado while making appropriate documentation available to staff. The University of Colorado's Computer Science and Engineering Laboratory will be tasked with designing the system so specific usage can be monitored. Depending on advice from our partners, specific safeguards may be built into the system. Although the specific development efforts to be undertaken will depend on the outcomes of the needs assessment R5, we expect to leverage and build upon an existing foundation of basic research and prototypes. We will develop a three-tiered context aware support and information system to be deployed in community living homes. The three tiers will be:
  • Tier 1 - Resident-centered technologies. Develop personal devices and other technologies (e.g., kiosks) that provide task support to group home residents.

The SANDEE acronym stands for a S ystem for A ssisted N avigation in D ynamic and compl E x E nvrironments. The objective of a SANDEE is to enable the visually impaired to navigate dynamic and complex indoor and outdoor environments with comfort and ease. We are developing SANDEEs to address the limitations of the existing assisted navigation technologies, such as dependency on one sensor type, inability to do sensor fusion, insufficient context sensitivity, limited communication capabilities, and the failure to reduce the user's navigation-related cognitive load. We emphasize the feasibility of robot-assisted navigation. In fact, robot-assisted navigation is one of the assisted navigation modes that we are actively investigating.
