Introduction
With large numbers of student assessments to be managed there are advantages for lecturers to use computer managed learning (CML) systems for assessment and student tracking. If lecturers are to use CML as one part of their assessment program, it is important that they use effectively all of the information available. Computer managed learning systems are software packages with several common features, including the ability to generate tests from banks of questions, marking of tests generated, statistical analysis of the results, keeping records of students' marks and progress. Feedback to students on their responses is common. CML systems usually have the ability to hold many banks of questions, each of which can be categorized into smaller components, such as topics, learning outcomes or objectives. Often questions can also be coded on a variety of characteristics, for example, degree of difficulty and cognitive content. The key function of a CML system is to generate tests. It has a template or a coursemap where the parameters used to generate any test are stored. Options for the generation of any test can vary. Tests may be generated using the same questions for all students, others may be set to select questions randomly but take them from specific parts of the bank of questions. In this case, students are more likely to have unique tests, depending on the number of questions available for selection.

About Undergraduate Assessment
The quality of education is a national concern. For more than ten years, parents, the public at large, and legislators have debated the effectiveness of the American educational system. They are all concerned about the answers to questions like these: 1. What do students need to learn to be productive members of society? 2. Are students developing the skills needed to achieve their personal goals? 3. Is the educational system providing a program of studies relevant to life in the next century? As an integral part of the Center for Teaching and Learning, assessment at UIS is designed to fit the specific educational needs and interests of students and faculty. Assessment staff administer the entrance and exit assessment tests, forward test results to students and their advisers, and work closely with faculty in evaluating student writing samples. The purpose is to evaluate specific learning skills, track student progress through the educational experience at UIS, and provide meaningful feedback to students, faculty, and programs. Besides giving students information on their academic strengths and weaknesses, the information gained in the process helps programs review their curricula and evaluate their effectiveness. Through these activities, assessment can help UIS find answers to the questions posed above.

Abstracts
Online assessment in practice: Manolis Mavrikis (Edinburgh) WALLIS is a web-based Interactive Learning Environment that is being developed in the School of Mathematics at Edinburgh University and is currently used to support mainstream teaching of first year students. WALLIS contains interactive activities, self testing material as well as summative assessment, using MAPLE to validate students' answers. Its core engine has a design inspired by research in the AIED (Artificial Intelligence in Education) field and provides lively feedback that targets students' actions and answers. Following a brief description of the system, the talk will focus on aspects of students' interactions as well as the results of a carefully designed pilot where the software is used to replace standard teaching and assessment.

Increasing Assessment Accuracy and Accessibility through UDL
We have outlined numerous shortcomings inherent in traditional assessments. How can new media and the UDL framework support teachers' ability to improve the evaluation process? Our knowledge of the three brain networks helps us understand the kinds of flexibility needed for the most accurate and most informative ongoing assessments.
Flexibility in Presentation
Technology enables teachers to provide multiple representations of content in the context of ongoing assessment. Varying the media within the representation is one of the most useful options. For example, Mr. Costa can provide text-to-speech support for Sophia during a history or science test so that her visual recognition deficits will not confound the results. But the concept of multiple representations goes well beyond the idea of offering varied media. Different representations can incorporate different supports, such as links to important background information, context-sensitive vocabulary supports, or glossary items. They can also be displayed in different formats—such as a visual concept map, a set of key points, a timeline, or a diagram—to make the content more accessible to certain students.

var loc = "../../../"; What are the uses and misuses of tests? Do higher test scores mean better schools? How does the intense pressure to raise test scores affect the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom? These are some of the questions FRONTLINE set out to explore in interviews with educators, policymakers, and educational testing experts across the country. What we found is that although standards-based reform has widespread support, experts see a danger in our reliance on standardized tests as the primary measure of school quality. Without the right kinds of tests, they say, and without an understanding of their proper uses, we may do more harm than good to public education in America.
In the course of making "Testing Our Schools," correspondent John Merrow and producer John Tulenko interviewed teachers and school administrators who are grappling with the realities of increased testing and its effects for better and worse on the quality of teaching and learning. Here are excerpts from selected interviews with educators in two states, Virginia and California, where testing has already transformed what goes on in the classroom.
"Today we are rushing headlong in search of the 'Holy Grail' of rising test scores," writes John Merrow. "Many unfortunate decisions are being made as pressure for 'accountability' overwhelms common sense." This excerpt from Merrow's new book

    Teaching to the Test
By Lloyd Bond WHAT DO YOU THINK? Carnegie Conversations provides a public forum where you can engage publicly with the author and read and respond to what others have to say. Join the conversation A recurring criticism of tests used in high-stakes decision making is that they distort instruction and force teachers to "teach to the test." The criticism is not without merit. The public pressure on students, teachers, principals, and school superintendents to raise scores on high-stakes tests is tremendous, and the temptation to tailor and restrict instruction to only that which will be tested is almost irresistible. Although many view teaching to the test as an all or none issue, in practice it is actually a continuum. At one extreme, some teachers examine the achievement objectives as described in their state's curriculum and then design instructional activities around those objectives. This is done without regard to a particular test. At the other extreme is the unsavory and simply dishonest practice of drilling students on the actual items that will appear on the tests.
