One in four Nevada high school seniors is in danger of not graduating because they failed a required math test. New York teachers are accused of cheating to raise their students’ test scores. M assachusetts students plan to boycott that state’s “unfair” assessment program. At the same time, Texas gains kudos for the “Texas Miracle” – annual increases in test scores. What’s going on? Are assessment tests ruining American education, as opponents claim, or setting new standards of excellence, as their advocates say? Unfortunately, there is no clear answer. Like the standards on which they are supposed to be based, state assessment tests to date have been subjected to little research on their intended benefits and unintended negative consequences. They are, however, popular, growing in importance and an increasing source of controversy. Critics of testing programs argue that the assessment tests in use today: Interfere with good teaching and learning by narrowing the curriculum and emphasizing rote memory Discriminate against minorities and poor students Increase the dropout rate Cost states and districts precious dollars more effectively spent in other ways

    Information about how to indentify possible dyslexia in a pupil: The criteria most commonly used in assessment is the disparity (difference) between a pupil's intelligence and their actual achievement. If a pupil you teach appears to speak and listen normally, yet they are unable to read and spell, then there may be more to check out. Some of the well-known symptoms of dyslexia are:
    • confusion over the direction letters face (b/d, p/9, p/q);
    • difficulties with left and right;
    • difficulties with keeping organized;
    • difficulties with spelling
    • difficulties with directions (e.g. east and west);
    • missing out words when reading.
    More information What causes dyslexia To be quite honest, nobody quite knows at the moment. There has been a real increase in the amount of information available through research, and a number of possibilities are beginning to emerge, but the waters are still fairly murky. The overall picture is that

    The Assessment is for Learning development programme has already made some progress in shifting the emphasis towards assessment to support learning. In Educating for Excellence , the response to the National Debate, clear commitments were given to move away from assessment which simply grades pupils at each stage to assessment which helps pupils understand how they can improve. These commitments were re-iterated in

    We are committed to ensuring that every young person receives the best education possible. The interests of the pupil will always come first and the developments proposed here, for assessment, testing and reporting policy for 3-14 year olds, reflect this. Since 2002, the Assessment is for Learning development programme has sought ways of developing practice in assessment. Good feedback is essential to inform improvement at all levels in the education system, and the programme is built upon this principle. The framework to support this has three linked parts: assessment FOR learning, which is concerned with day-to-day classroom interactions and feedback that are focused on the learner and sensitive to his or her individual needs; assessment AS learning, where pupils' participation in assessment and reflecting on their learning helps them to becomes better learners; and assessment OF learning, which is concerned with determining how much individuals or groups have learned, at what level, and how well. In order for a system to work, these aspects need to complement and support each other. Our proposed actions are designed to enable this to happen.

    Assessment and Testing English language arts professionals believe in the value of a rich and varied curriculum, but such a curriculum is threatened by the restrictive influence of standardized tests. Since the 1970s, NCTE has repeatedly warned that a preoccupation with large-scale standardized testing leads to the distortion and reduction of curriculum and to unwise expenditure of public funds that could be better spent on teaching programs. This is still NCTE's position today, and it's more relevant than ever. High-stakes tests often fail to accurately assess students' knowledge, understanding, and capability. Therefore, using any single test to make important decisionssuch as graduation, promotion, funding of schools, or employment and compensation of administrators and teachersis educationally unsound and unethical. NCTE believes that a wide variety of assessments, such as writing portfolios, oral presentations, and group projects, should be part of a student's school experience and these means of assessment should evaluate both the student and the curriculum.

    I will always remember the horror of receiving my chemistry result when I was thirteen years old. I knew it wasn't going to be high, but to come bottom of the class was very upsetting. It was all made worse by the fact that the chemistry teacher read the results to the whole class, from first to last place. My humiliation was complete. Students can have very negative reactions towards tests and it's no surprise when they too may have had experiences like this.
    Why testing doesn't work
    There are many arguments against using tests as a form of assessment:
    • Some students become so nervous that they can't perform and don't give a true account of their knowledge or ability Other students can do well with last minute cramming despite not having worked throughout the course Once the test has finished, students can just forget all that they had learned

    Testing and learning

    Testing is very common in the classroom. But what exactly is the purpose of a test? Are they designed to help students learn or to provide evidence of learning? Can tests in fact have a negative effect on learning? There is a related article on this topic which you may like to read before considering this point: Testing helps learning. Result s of voting

    Tests are important in determining the students' learning achievements in the classroom; at the same time they also help teachers to monitor his/her teaching methods in the classroom. One must be careful not to take a test just to evaluate a student and his/her academic learning achievements. In order to be cautious of this common tendency (to judge a student) schools should have some sort of test policies for all teachers to follow. I am thankful to the BBC for providing this valuable information network. I hope many teachers try to use the information provided here and use it in their schools or share with their colleagues.
