Let's see what we can do for your staff! The thorniest of educational issues, assessment conjures up images of wading through piles of research and best practices in measuring student performance. For some it is the key to ultimate education reform. For others it is the tail wagging the instructional dog. Yet formative or summative, standardized or authentic, assessment is an integral part of good instruction. Ideally it is the part of teaching that offers feedback to help us sharpen our instructional strategies. This weeks newsletter attempts to offer resources that will help you achieve this ideal in your classroom. Thanks to Jerry for his recommendations, as always. Enjoy!

Classroom Assessment of Teaching and Learning
What is a classroom assessment?
Classroom assessment is the process of collecting information from your students about their experience as learners in your class. There are many different ways of collecting information, depending on what you are teaching and what kind of information you need. However, all are based on the principle that the more clearly and specifically you understand how students are learning, the more effectively you can teach them.
Basic principles of classroom assessment
The purpose is to improve the quality of teaching and learning that takes place in your classroom.
  • It is collected in a systematic way so that all students contribute.
  • It is ungraded, so that students can provide useful information that won't be used to evaluate them.
  • It calls for a response from the instructor. (If you're not prepared to change, it may be better not to ask.)
  • Feedback collected once is helpful, but regular feedback on an ongoing basis tells you far more.
There are countless ways to assess learning and teaching. Here are two examples frequently used at UW:

63. Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning
the scholarship of teaching is not merely teaching our scholarship. If theintent is to disseminate what you learn through your assessment, yes.
http://depts.washington.edu/cidrweb/teachingscholar.html
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is the perspective that instructors can approach their teaching as a form of scholarly work. Eileen Bender and Donald Grey ( ) describe the scholarship of teaching in this way: "... the scholarship of teaching is not merely teaching our scholarship. Nor is it simply teaching well. .... The scholarship of teaching means that we invest in our teaching the intellectual powers we practice in our research. .... " (emphasis added) Pat Hutching and Lee Shulman ( ) also argue that the scholarship of teaching and learning is more than simply teaching well, and that it leads to particular kinds of outcomes: "... public, open to critique and evaluation, and in a form that others can build on ... in which faculty frame and systematically investigate questions related to student learning - the conditions under which it occurs, what it looks like, how to deepen it, and so forth - and do so with an eye not only to improving their own classroom but to advancing practice beyond it." ( emphasis added) The information and resources that follow have been assembled to assist UW instructors in their efforts to engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning in the classes that they teach.

focus questions project samples related projects Overview Given the importance of teacher quality for improving student achievement, teacher assessment has emerged as an important tool in improving education. In addition to measuring the quality of teacher practice, teacher assessment also serves to further the dialogue about what is considered good teaching practice. ASDS is involved in teacher assessment projects that are making use of new methodologies to document teacher knowledge and skill, both for formal certification and for teacher support and improvement. These include projects that address a specific need for a targeted group of teachers (e.g., certifying teachers to teach English language learners, helping beginning teachers improve their practice) as well as projects that are targeted at improving teacher quality in different academic areas (e.g., science and arts). Across all projects, ASDS attempts to support teachers during the assessment process, with the primary goal being improved teacher quality and student achievement. Focus Questions

Through hands-on projects, students develop critical-thinking, self-motivation, teamwork, and communication skills that will help them throughout their personal and work lives. Just as project-based learning fundamentally alters the curriculum, it also requires a more comprehensive form of assessment to evaluate student performance. Student portfolios, oral presentations, journals, and multimedia reports provide a clearer picture of student achievement. Performance assessment is "real-life" assessment the way adults are judged in society and in the workplace.

Teaching to the Test
By Lloyd Bond WHAT DO YOU THINK? Carnegie Conversations provides a public forum where you can engage publicly with the author and read and respond to what others have to say. Join the conversation A recurring criticism of tests used in high-stakes decision making is that they distort instruction and force teachers to "teach to the test." The criticism is not without merit. The public pressure on students, teachers, principals, and school superintendents to raise scores on high-stakes tests is tremendous, and the temptation to tailor and restrict instruction to only that which will be tested is almost irresistible. Although many view teaching to the test as an all or none issue, in practice it is actually a continuum. At one extreme, some teachers examine the achievement objectives as described in their state's curriculum and then design instructional activities around those objectives. This is done without regard to a particular test. At the other extreme is the unsavory and simply dishonest practice of drilling students on the actual items that will appear on the tests.

Historical Perspectives
The Louisiana Teacher Assessment Program has been operational since August 1, 1994. In the early years of the program (1994-1998), the program consisted of a support semester and an assessment semester. During the support semester, the three-person assessor team (principal, experienced teacher, and external assessor) each visited the new teacher one time. During these visits, the assessors conducted "practice" observations and interviews, shared results with the teacher, and assisted him/her in creating a professional development plan targeting strategies to improve weaker areas in the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching, the basis for the assessment. Many assessors provided additional assistance to the new teacher as opportunity and time allowed.

Developing course learning goals and graduate attributes
Definition
The learning goals for a course are statements of what students should be able to do on successfully completing the course.
Writing learning goals for a course
Learning goals set out in more detail what it will mean for students to have achieved the course's purpose For a typical university course about five to ten goals should suffice. If there are fewer goals then they may become too vague or too general to be of use either to students in guiding their learning or to you in assessing students' work. If there are many more goals then they tend to become too detailed for students to be able to see the pattern behind them.
Key points to remember when writing learning goals
  • Each goal should be concise, and it should be possible to observe the results of achieving it.

The PEP-R is a nice assessment and program planning tool for preschool and gradeschool-aged children with autism. The test covers a variety of key developmental areas and can help the give one a better picture of the, sometimes sporadic, developmental patterns of children with autism. The test items are presented with simple, concrete instructions, and most of the expected responses are nonverbal. The PEP-R is the first part of a four volume set, Individualized Assessment and Treatment for Autistic and Developmentally Disabled Children . The third volume of this set, Teaching Activities for Autistic Children meshes well with the PEP-R assessment, providing ideas for teaching skills and behaviors in those areas where a child may exhibit some deficit. A description from volume one of the PEP-R: The PEP-R is an inventory of behaviors and skills designed to identify uneven and idiosyncratic learning patterns. The test is most appropriately used with children functioning at of below the preschool range and within the chronological age range of 6 months to 7 years. If a child is older than 7 but younger than 12 years, the PEP-R can provide useful information when at least some developmental skills are at or below the first-grade level. After 12 years of age, a prevocational evaluation using the

National Board Certified Teachers ... Ethics
This page provides information for an individual considering becoming a candidate for National Board Certification. What is National Board Certification? Are there other roles for teachers who are not ready to seek National Board Certification? National Board Certification is a demonstration of a candidate's teaching practice as measured against high and rigorous standards. It is a symbol of commitment to excellence in teaching. When a teacher achieves a National Board certificate, it's a credential attesting to the fact that teacher has been assessed by his or her peers as one who is accomplished, makes sound professional judgments about student learning, and acts effectively with those judgments.
The advanced system of National Board Certification is voluntary and complements, but does not replace, state licensing. It is a professional certification increasingly used by states as an option for advanced licensing status.
Equally important, National Board Certification is a means to professional growth and improvement. Candidates describe the process as a way to deepen subject matter knowledge and become more skillful in daily classroom instruction and student assessment.

Research No Child Left Behind requires that educators use “scientifically-based research” to guide decisions on programs and resources to use in the classroom. To help educators sort practices backed by rigorous evidence from those that are not, the U.S. Department of Education has provided the resource, “Identifying and Implementing Educational Practices Supported By Rigorous Evidence: A User Friendly Guide” . This Guide explains that in order to identify “strong evidence of effectiveness,” well-designed and implemented randomized controlled trials are needed; type of research has not been very common in education. Until randomized controlled trials are more widespread, existing research studies can be mined for “possible evidence of effectiveness." See the Guide referenced above for a checklist on things to consider when evaluating research evidence. That said, we submit for your review some recent educational technology research available online, organized in the following categories: Access and Digital Divide Computer and Internet Use by Adolescents in 2001

I will always remember the horror of receiving my chemistry result when I was thirteen years old. I knew it wasn't going to be high, but to come bottom of the class was very upsetting. It was all made worse by the fact that the chemistry teacher read the results to the whole class, from first to last place. My humiliation was complete. Students can have very negative reactions towards tests and it's no surprise when they too may have had experiences like this.
Why testing doesn't work
There are many arguments against using tests as a form of assessment:
  • Some students become so nervous that they can't perform and don't give a true account of their knowledge or ability Other students can do well with last minute cramming despite not having worked throughout the course Once the test has finished, students can just forget all that they had learned
