Much like the Nazis in Casablanca, John Ashcroft enjoys a good song as long as people remember their place. Even before September 11 , Attorney General John Ashcroft was a disaster waiting to happen. An evangelical fanatic with an agenda, Ashcroft was a man with a dream, or perhaps we should call it a vision, or perhaps it would be more accurately described as an undeniable mandate from God. After sitting Senator Ashcroft lost his seat to a dead man, Mel Carnahan the first time in history this has ever happened President George W Bush decided to elevate Ashcroft from his indignity. The collective cringe could be heard all across America, from women, gays, blacks, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, supporters of civil rights, doctors, people who enjoy having sex, Methodists... And if there's anything worse than an attorney general with an apocalyptic messiah complex, it's an attorney general with an apocalyptic messiah complex at a time when infidels have declared a holy war on America.

"ASSEMBLIES OF GOD" AND OTHER "LATTER RAIN" SECTS
by Paul Stenhouse, M.S.C., Ph.D
The recent announcement by Sydney jockey Darren Beadman that he was giving up his promising racing career to become a minister in the Christian Life Centre (run by the Assemblies of God Pentecostal Church), provoked some predictable regret in the industry and some scoffing in the media. When genuinely sympathetic people find the 'speaking in tongues,' shouting, visions, trances, jerking, dancing, 'ecstatic utterances,' 'gifts of prophecy' and 'interpretation of tongues' associated with Charismatic 'religion' too irrational and hysterical to be credible, is it surprising that the unbelievers scoff?
Pentecostal sects and the 'Holiness' movement The 'Pentecostalists' are part of the 'Holiness' millenarian movement that started in the 1880s in southern California, and for which the 'charismatic' element was dominant. All members are believed to be filled with, and led by, the Spirit and therefore 'perfect. They practice what they claim to be miraculous healing, and boast of receiving the 'baptism of the Spirit,' and the gifts of the Spirit.' They exhibit an emotionalism that is regarded as characteristic of the extreme Charismatic sects.

They were motivated in no small measure by the fact that state-enforced religion, far from fostering civilized relations, had provided the ideological grounds over the previous centuries for devastating wars and persecutions. Kings, princes and popes had sent millions to their deaths, from the Crusades to the Thirty Year War, on the basis of biblical citations. The influence of the Enlightenment helped foster a more tolerant attitude toward divergent religious viewpoints. By the mid-1700s, religious freedom had become a major issue. The Americanization of the Common Law , William E. Nelson, University of Georgia Press, 1994, p. 115). In its place developed the view that the discovery of truth was a complex process involving the open clash of opposing ideas. Thus, society had no business attempting to impose one set of beliefs, religious or political, that all had to accept. In the period following the American Revolution the prosecution of individuals for violations of a purely moral character declined. The principle that personal beliefs and personal ethics, so long as they did not harm others, were not to be dictated by the state, but reserved for the individual, became embedded in popular consciousness, marking a major advance in democratic rights.

    Overview of the Church
The Family is a high-demand faith group that requires great personal sacrifice on the part of its members. They emphasize Jesus' teachings against loyalties to one's family-of-origin. They stress Jesus' preaching in favor of poverty and a simple life. The group merges traditional Evangelical Christian beliefs and practices with the belief in universal salvation , contacts with spirits, communal living, and free love among adults within the group. They are a favorite target of the counter-cult movement who attack its unorthodox theological beliefs. They are also attacked by the anti-cult movement who accuse it of mind control and criminal sexual practices. The latter accusations appear to be unfounded. They are a popular subject for study by academics who are interested in new religious movements. All studies that we have found have given The Family a clean bill of health in recent years.
    History of the Church
The roots of The Family can be traced back to the counter-culture movement of the late 1960's. Many young adults, called flower children, or hippies, left the middle-class life of their families of origin and sought a simpler lifestyle in the form of communal life in southern California. Out of this hippie movement came a loosely connected group of Evangelical Christian organizations collectively known as

    Americans like a stouter brand.
By Dave Shiflett A new poll tells an old story: Americans are deeply religious, especially compared to Europeans. “Religious devotion sets the United States apart from some of its closest allies,” according to an AP-Ipsos survey . “Nearly all U.S. respondents said faith is important to them and only 2 percent said they do not believe in God.” Western Europeans are the “least devout” among the people surveyed (countries include the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, and Spain).
I certainly found this to be true while working on my new book, Exodus: Why Americans are Fleeing Liberal Churches for Conservative Christianity . In interviews with believers a consistent theme emerged. They believers rejected the God-lite of progressive Christianity. They desire the absolute God of tradition.
Writer Andy Ferguson encountered the lesser god while taking a class at a West Coast Episcopal seminary. Andy sometimes argued basic Christian beliefs with a professor. After one such discussion he repaired to the lunchroom, where he was approached by a fellow student. “We have finally figured out what your problem is,” the classmate said. “You are the only one here who believes in God.” Andy thought it over and concluded: This guy is right. Thus began a journey that recently took him into Catholicism. In economic terms he had switched brands. It’s highly unlikely he’ll be switching back.

Pope's visit comes during religious revival
    01/15/98- Updated 11:57 PM ET
By Jack Kelley, USA TODAY H AVANA, Cuba - Roman Catholic nuns are teaching hundreds of new converts the words to Jesus Loves Me. Baptist church members are going door to door handing out religious tracts titled Cuba Belongs to Christ. And Assemblies of God pastors are holding up to 20 services a day to accommodate the church's new members. "There's an incredible spiritual awakening happening in Cuba," says the Rev. Jaime Rodriguez, 60, pastor of the Fountain of Life Assemblies of God Church. "It's powerful. You can feel it. Cuba's people are starting to wake up." They're doing so, to be sure, only because they have the blessing of Fidel Castro's government. Last month, he allowed the island's Christians to celebrate Christmas for the first time since 1969. This week, the prelate of Cuba's Roman Catholic Church delivered a 30-minute, prime-time sermon on state-controlled TV. And Wednesday, Pope John Paul II arrives here for what is clearly the most important visit the pope has paid to a communist state since he first went to his native Poland in 1979. The first pope to set foot on Cuban soil, he'll find a genuine religious revival in a country that for decades offered Marxism as a substitute for religion and expelled priests. Tens of thousands of Cubans, ranging from powerful government officials to poor sugar cane workers, are flocking to churches. Even Granma, the island's communist newspaper, recently acknowledged the revival, calling it "big . . . and interesting."
