By John Hutchinson
London and Birmingham have just seen the biggest celebration of Asian and Far Eastern art, culture and commerce ever organised in the United Kingdom.
At Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre (NEC) the recent Mega Mela Festival offered five pavilions of fashion, "Bollywood" stars and advice on health, beauty, food and business management.
It attracted over 40,000 visitors from the Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan communities resident in the Midlands and North of England. In 1998 they spent 1.85 million pounds sterling and the 1999 event was much larger.
Drawing attention to the dynamic interaction of two great civilisations - the spiritual East and the scientific West - and their influence on one another down the centuries, both events confidentially acknowledged the artistic and commercial ties that still bind them together.
The London occasion was organised by 50 art dealers, three of the capital's leading auction houses and major art galleries. Asian Art made its point effectively with fashion shows, lectures, seminars and social gatherings on an unprecedented scale demonstrating the extraordinary alliance between academia and commercial concerns unequalled in British contemporary history.

INTRODUCTION
Asia, more than any other region in the world, has become the focus of extensive international business, political relationships, and cultural exchange. Millions of people of Asian descent have become an integral part of American society. Indeed, California, more than any other place in the United States, is the residence of immigrants from throughout Asia. In order to keep pace with current developments in this extremely important part of the world, students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to minor in Asian Studies. The faculty for the Asian Studies Minor is drawn from several departments. What they have in common is that they teach and do research on Asia. The interdisciplinary nature of the Minor allows students the unique opportunity to learn about Asia from broad and differing perspectives.

Professors : Paul H. Noguchi, Mary Evelyn Tucker Associate Professors : James J. Orr (Chair), James R. Pusey Assistant Professors : Elizabeth L. Armstrong (adjunct), Erik R. Lofgren, Anne Wang Pusey (adjunct) The civilizations of East Asia offer a wealth of human experience of invaluable import to every academic discipline. Unbroken cultural lines of great antiquity lead to modern East Asian cultures of ever growing global significance. Whether we look first to the past, the present, or the future, in studying East Asia we study ourselves and our world. A traditional liberal education, limited to the study of "Western" civilization, is no longer a liberal education. The department of East Asian studies, therefore, offers courses for all Bucknell students, as well as for the special interests of students choosing either the East Asian studies major or one of the department’s three minors: in East Asian studies, Chinese, or Japanese. A secondary concentration can be pursued in all languages offered. Application for a secondary concentration should be made to the chair of the department. A secondary concentration requires a minimum of seven courses in the given language (or six courses and a designated Short Term unit). At least one of the seven courses must involve a study of literature or culture (taught either in the language or in translation), but only one course in translation may be counted toward the concentration. A student may petition to have up to three comparable courses, completed at other institutions either in the United States or abroad, apply toward the secondary concentration. Advanced Placement courses may not be applied toward the secondary concentration.
All students, and especially majors, are strongly encouraged to spend an extended period of time abroad prior to graduation. Opportunities to do so include participation in the Bates Fall Semester Abroad programs in Austria, China, Japan, Germany, and Russia; junior year or junior semester abroad programs; summer sessions; and the various off-campus Short Term units sponsored by the department.
Entering students are assigned to the appropriate level in language courses according to the following criteria: their performance on a SAT II or Advanced Placement Test of the College Entrance Examination Board taken in secondary school, relative proficiency based on length of previous study, and/or after consultation with an appropriate member of the department.
