1. Introduction
Taking a broad historical perspective, most countries have, to varying degrees, been influenced by the political, economic, social and cultural heritage of Europe. This influence has been the predominant force in shaping the present world and continues to this day. For example, the political ideals of democracy and nationhood; economic philosophies of capitalism, socialism and communism; concepts of human rights, including gender equality and freedom of speech; and technologies and styles of management are all influenced by Western thought. Thus, the lifestyles of most people in Asia and the Pacific have been affected. Often what is considered modern and progressive is European or, by extension, American in nature.

ACCESS TO ASIAN SERIALS IN AUSTRALIAN LIBRARIES
Andrew Gosling
Chief Librarian
Asian Collections
National Library of Australia
Paper
Introduction
Recent years have witnessed considerable achievements by Australian libraries in improving access to Asian serials. This has been largely the result of cooperation. However there remain a number of problems and issues for the future. Much effort has been made during the past decade to improve Asian collections and services nationally. Since the 1989 Ingleson Report which included a major examination of Australia's Asian library resources, there have been a range of meetings, surveys and projects on Asian topics. During the 1990s the National Library has organised a series of National Roundtables on Libraries and Asia and related meetings bringing together Asian studies academics and librarians to discuss important issues. These have been instrumental in successful funding bids in particular for the development of the National Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) Service; the South Asia : Renovating the National Collection project and for national surveys of Asian collections in 1992 and of users of Korean materials in 1997-98. This paper does not consider these developments in any detail apart from where serials are concerned. Cooperation on Asian materials in Australia has rarely been focused exclusively on serials. In fact surprisingly little has been written specifically on Asian serial collecting and access in Australia. However serials are at the heart of a number of recent developments.

Report of Workshop "Networking and Cooperation Between Asian and European Development NGOs and Social Movements"
Connecting Civil Society of Asia and Europe
    Barcelona, Spain, 18 June 2004
The workshop involved 30 participants from 17 countries. The majority of the participants came from development NGOs and policy-advocacy groups that have worked together in the past in activities connected with the Asia-Europe People's Forum (AEPF). These groups are involved in various forms of networks. Pietje Vervest (Transnational Institute) chaired the workshop and Dorothy Guerrero (Asienhaus) was the rapporteur. The Workshop opened with a short introduction by Pietje Vervest of the Asia-Europe People's Forum and this was folllowed by a short discussion about themes on networking and international solidarity by Dorothy Guerrero. Dorothy identified several themes like identity, complementarity/reciprocity, restitution and vision in international solidarity and networking, which served as ground questions for the discussion. An additional theme that she mentioned is the issue of changing power relations through international solidarity of critically committed social movements and development NGOs. The following notes reflect the concerns/ideas that were raised and discussed during the workshop by the participants.

Southeast Asian Studies Resources and Information Description of Library Collection Perkins Library holdings in Southeast Asian area studies are generally supportive of undergraduate level teaching and research. Subject areas covered are primarily history, culture, sociology, economics and literature. Vietnam War materials have been a recent, moderate strength; efforts have also been made of late to add to holdings concerning public policy, development and social issues. Additional collecting in art, religion and music is handled by the Lilly, Divinity and Music libraries. Language emphasis is on English materials, with some coverage of French (for the countries of the former French Indochina) and Spanish (especially the Philippines) and, to an even lesser degree, Dutch (Indonesia). There are few holdings in indigenous languages. [Back to the top] Databases Available to the Duke Community

Professor, Osaka University Graduate School of Letters Chapter 1: ARCHITECTURE ORNAMENTING NATURE, Learning from Athens “Aurora and Cephalus” by Pierre-Narcisse Guerin, first exhibited at the Salon in 1810, is now in the Louvre. Aurora is the Greek goddess of dawn who supposedly has “fingers of rosy color” (Homer). She fell in love with a beautiful young man, Cephalus. In this picture, she is raising a purple veil with her rosy fingers to see and perhaps hug Cephalus. Aurora is a sister of the Greek sun god, Helios, and in the role of guiding the start of his daily travel every morning. After her falling love with Cephalus, however, she neglected her morning duties, and the universe was thrown into confusion. Then, a Cupid or Amor (Eros in Greece ) made Cephalus’ love for Aurora awaken. She took him to the heavens in her chariot. Then, the universe returned to normal. This story was not originally in Greek mythology, but later made by an Italian dramatist in Baroque period, as Il rapimento di Cefalo . The painting of “Aurora and Cephalus” in the Louvre is a further reinterpretation of the Italian story by a French Neoclassicist painter. The perception and image of dawn in this painting is very Mediterranean, formed in
