Korean stocks are off after tech weakness in New York, but Hynix is higher as its deal with Micron seems dead HONG KONG, China Asian markets are moving higher on Friday morning, with Australian stocks shaking off conflicting signals from Wall Street overnight. The exception is Seoul, where the Kospi is sharply lower. It's down 2.3 percent at 840.22 in mid-morning trade. Hynix moving ahead after Micron walks
Hynix stock is sharply higher, up 3.7 percent at 845 won. But the Korean government and analysts have said they are not sure what will become of the company if it is left to fend for itself. Markets are closed for a holiday in Tokyo and will reopen on Tuesday Rival Samsung Electronics is down 3.2 percent at 364,500 won. Tech shares are generally lower in Asia after Nasdaq's 1.95 percent fall overnight on Wall Street, to 1,644.82.

Asian stocks off to flying start
The bulls have had their head in South Korean stocks so far in 2002, with Hynix driving the gains from the start By staff and wire reports HONG KONG, China Asian markets set off to another good start on Thursday. South Korean stocks are again the focus, with tech gains there spilling over to the rest of the region. They are up 1.14 percent in early trade, leaving the Kospi index at 733.19. Hynix Semiconductor is again the main mover, after a rally in U.S. chip stocks overnight. Hynix rose 3.2 percent to 2,860 won. Officials say a deal with Micron Technology is due this month. Hynix has also fueled a rally in Asian chipmakers by raising prices on its contract chips. That gave Taiwan's market another lift. The Taiex is up 1.09 percent in early trade, at 5,660.82.

Asian markets soar, Nikkei up 5%
HONG KONG, China Asian markets surged by midday Monday, boosted by an impressive Wall Street performance which saw the Dow Jones index close at a six-month high last Friday. Asian economy: Five years after the crisis
The Thai baht plunge in '97 triggered stock market crashes all over Asia From Lisa Barron CNN Correspondent HONG KONG, China (CNN) On July 2, 1997 the Thai baht collapsed, unleashing a wave of currency devaluations and stock market crashes across Asia. It was the day that seven years of easy credit, excessive borrowing, and inflated asset prices ended in crisis. Five years later, how is Asia faring, and how much has it changed? There are as many different answers as there are countries, analysts say. Just look at the three nations that received bailouts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia. "My view is that the jury is still out on the IMF's form of intervention," says Anthony Norman, partner at Sydney-based Ferrier Hodgson. "I'm not sure the one size fits all style of IMF solutions imposed on economies that need emergency loans is necessarily the right formula."

Asian techs feel the job cut sting
By CNN's Kristie Lu Stout HONG KONG, China (CNN) More than 200,000 job cuts have been announced in the last few months, and Asia's millions of tech workers are beginning to feel the sting. Asia, a major center of manufacturing for the technology sector, is wrestling with slowing growth and plunging demand. To fight off the global downturn, tech heavyweights from Tokyo to Taipei are swinging the axe. "It's getting bad and it's going to get worse," says Hong Kong-based executive search consultant Paul McGrory at EL Consulting.
    Knock-on effect
"In Asia specifically, there is a latency effect, a knock-on effect," McGrory adds. "What happens in the U.S. typically comes two years later. This is a negative effect and it's coming very quick." Japanese electronics giant NEC plans to lay off 4,000 workers. IT mammoth Fujitsu is launching a massive early retirement scheme. And in Taiwan, notebook maker Acer sacked almost 1,000 employees.

Asian stocks end up on choppy day
Car stocks rose on Friday in Korea, in a week where they posted strong sales and bankrupt Daewoo unveiled its new Kalos HONG KONG, China (CNN) On a choppy day of trade, most Asian markets made it into the black by the close Friday. South Korean stocks spent most of the day trying to work their way back from chip-induced losses. Seoul's main index, the Kospi, ended down 0.37 percent at 856.72. But the Kosdaq, with its emphasis on smaller shares, climbed into positive territory, ending up 0.22 percent at 76.48. Many markets lacked strong direction, with Japan closed for a holiday. That sense of directionless for Asia was compounded by a mixed day on Wall Street on Thursday, when Nasdaq dropped sharply but the Dow Jones industrial average rose.

Asian anger grows over U.S. steel tariffs
US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick said the steel tariffs were a temporary safeguard to help the U.S. industry CNN's Geoff Hiscock and wires SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) Outrage over the U.S. decision to impose tariffs on steel imports is building among Asian producers with Japan, Korea and Australia saying they will likely seek action over the move from the World Trade Organization. The European Union has already said it will seek WTO intervention. But U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick told a Washington press briefing that the EU did not come to the steel issue "with clean hands". U.S. President George W. Bush announced the tariffs of up to 30 percent late Tuesday. They will take effect from March 20 and last for three years. The key steel producers affected include Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Russia, Ukraine, Germany and Brazil, plus smaller makers like Sweden and Australia.
