Japanese Edo-period (1600-1868) painting, calligraphy and prints are the strength of Worcester's Asian collection. Its holdings include outstanding examples of Chinese painting, ceramics, bronzes, and Buddhist sculpture. Ceramics and calligraphy represent Korean art, a new collecting area for the Museum. The Indian and Southeast Asian collections consist primarily of Hindu and Buddhist monumental sculpture, Indian miniature painting of all schools, Indian decorative objects; and Thai and Vietnamese ceramics. Painting, textiles (including rugs), ceramics and some metalwork represent the art of Islam. Courtesan and Two Attendants Hu-Shaped Vase Krishna Disguised as a Musician Young Woman with a Purse ... diverse studies of the visual arts by including asian arts in their teaching, the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection of asian art,
http://www.askasia.org/AsianArt/
Art is of intrinsic importance to the educational process. The arts help young people learn by giving them the desire to learn. The arts are systems of signification that encode the values and ideologies of their time and place. When teachers embark on culturally diverse studies of the visual arts by including Asian arts in their teaching, students will gain a broader and deeper understanding of the world in which they live. Often this leads to students studying the arts of their own cultureal heritage, thereby gaining self-esteem. This resource for educators uses the Asia Society's permanent collection, the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection of Asian Art, as an accessible and tangible starting point for discussion about the history, geography and cultures of Asia. How do I use this resource

The collection includes approximately 16,000 works, some 6,000 of which are woodblock prints.

Chinese jar sets record for Asian art
By Souren Melikian International Herald Tribune TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2005 LONDON The successful bidder was the world's leading dealer in early Chinese art, Giuseppe Eskenazi, acting on behalf of a private buyer. The previous highest auction price ever for Chinese porcelain was paid on Sept. 16, 2003, at Doyle's, New York, when another blue and white vessel of the 14th century, a so-called pilgrim flask, was sold for $5.83 million. The figure reached Tuesday, after a prolonged duel pitching Eskenazi against a telephone bidder, multiplied by 10 Christie's very timid estimate, quoted verbally before the sale. It doubled what informed art professionals expected it to sell for. The extraordinary price in part reflects the extraordinary character of the object. The heavily potted jar belongs to a very small group of jars, vases and bowls produced under the Mongol dynasty of the Yuan (1279-1368) between the 1330s and 1370s.

GLOBAL: Documenta X is on. Here is the official site, and here is the discussion group put together by Universes in Universe . As they say
" Following the intentions of the artistic director of the dX, to reach a maximum of "liveliness and involvement, analysis and criticism, openness and scepticism..." during the 100 days, a topic of discussion in this Forum will be the ways in which the art from Africa, Asia and Latin America has been presented in her manifestation culturelle. It will be interesting to see if the dX can meet the challenge of becoming an interdisciplinary look into a future where traditional categories will no longer apply.

Reopened in its Civic Center home in March 2003, the Asian Art Museum is one of the Western world's largest museums devoted to Asian art. Its collection boasts more than 15,000 art objects, such as world-class sculptures, paintings, bronzes, ceramics, and jade items, spanning 6,000 years of history and regions of south Asia, west Asia, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, China, Korea, and Japan. Previously in Golden Gate Park, the museum's new home in the city's Beaux Arts-style central library was renovated under Italian architect Gae Aulenti and includes 40,000 square feet of gallery space showcasing 2,500 objects at any given time. Add temporary exhibitions, live demonstrations, learning activities, cafe Asia, and a store, and you've got one very good reason to head to the Civic Center.

Among the museum's most notable pieces are the Chinese terra-cotta funerary art, Chinese snuff bottles, and Japanese netsukes (belt decorations). One room is devoted to Japanese ceramics, while three rooms are devoted to Chinese ceramics. The central hall contains stone religious sculptures of South Asia (primarily India). Permanent Collection
: Asian Art Asian art has long had a place among the Carlos Museum's collections, but the pace of this collecting activity has accelerated greatly in recent years, highlighted in the gallery's first installation, The Arts of India and the Himalayas: Recent Acquisitions seated Buddha eighteen-armed Vishnu with numerous swaying attendants, a stunning example of the elegance and sophistication of Indian medieval sculpture. Some of the finest bronze sculptures ever created were produced by artisans working under the Chola Dynasty of South India between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. A 10th-century bronze Jain altar representing the Jina Rishabhanatha enshrined , a gift of Kellstadt Professor of Marketing Jagdish Sheth of Emory's Goizueta Business School and his wife Madhu, offers eloquent testimony of the third great religious tradition to originate in India.
