Asian Art at the Venice Bienalle
FOR THE FIRST TIME AT VENICE, it was not just individual Chinese artists that were present - the People's Republic of China was this year represented with its own space. China's first official pavilion was opened in a temporary section of the Arsenale, but the intention is to create a permanent venue for China's future art and architecture exhibitions in Venice by 2007. This is indeed an important turning point for contemporary Chinese art...

The 14 Dalai Lamas: Tibetan Reincarnations of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara
World Museum Liverpool

Volume 36 - Number 6 - September 2005
The world first learned of Tibet and the Dalai Lama through diplomats and adventurers who were privileged or brave enough to journey there. With the tumultuous events of the mid-20th century, this exotic view has been transformed. Although the Dalai Lama has become one of the potent symbols of our time, little is known about the institution that he represents and the lineage he belongs to. `The 14 Dalai Lamas: Tibetan Reincarnations of Bodhisattva' re-presents the first significant study of these topics. Urs Haller and curator Martin Brauen introduce this Zurich exhibition. Per S rensen explains how the Dalai Lama's lineage was established and Kimiaki Tanaka discusses how it was represented in thangkas . Michael Henss traces the process in which photography transformed visual representations of the Dalai Lama from an icon to a `real' person.
Material amassed by early travellers to Tibet forms an important part of the Asian holdings at World Museum Liverpool. Emma Martin describes new displays which show such holdings to their best advantage. Eldon Worrall sheds light on the importance of the China Trade to Liverpool.

Asian Art Although the Nelson-Atkins has prestigious collections of European and American art, it is known above all for its magnificent collection of Asian art. The collection is considered one of the finest in the Western world for its scope, depth and consistently high quality. It includes art from China, Japan, Iran, Indonesia, Korea, India and other countries.
The Chinese collection comprises masterpieces from every phase of Chinese art. The bronze age (1200 B.C. to 500 B.C.) is especially well represented in a series of ceremonial vessels and weapons.
Fisherman's Evening Song , the greatest Northern Song landscape handscroll to have survived.

Museum of Asian Art
T he Museum of Asian Art (the only one in Greece) was founded in 1927 after the donation of 10.500 items by Gregorios Manos. Until 1974 it was a Chinese and Japanese Art museum, but later it was enriched with other private collections of items from central Asia, so it became an Asian Art museum. I t is housed in a building of the British Protectorate, designed by the British architect George Whitmore. It was initially used as the Residence of the Lord High Commisioner and as the headquarters of the Knights of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. After the unity of the Ionian Islands with Greece, it was given over by the British to the Greek state and for a while served as the summer residence of the Greek royal family.
T he museum contains collections donated by:
  • Gregorios Manos (ca. 10.500 items)
  • Nicolaos Chadjivassileiou (450 items)
  • Charilaos Chiotakis (341 items)
  • Petros Almanachos
  • Iordanis Siniosoglou and Yiannis Kollas
T he most important items of the exhibition are: Statuettes from China, dated to the T'ang dynasty (7th-8th centuries A.D.).

Asian art Japan, Kamakura period
'Prince Shotoku praying to the Buddha' c.1300 Works of Asian art in the national collection range from Neolithic and early Metal Age ceramics from Iran, Japan, Thailand and China, to installations created in the last decade by Thailand's Montien Boonma, Wenda Gu, a Chinese artist based in New York, and Yukinori Yanagi from Japan. One of the strengths of the collection is Hindu and Buddhist sculpture, which includes Japanese lacquered wooden and plaster images, stone works from south Asia, and lost-wax cast bronzes of India and Southeast Asia. Significant Hindu sculpture is also a feature and includes the great stone Vishnu from the Pala dynasty of Bangladesh, the charming bronze elephant-headed god, Ganesha, and the dynamic dancing figure of the god Shiva from the great bronze artists of the southern Indian Chola dynasty. Other features of the Asian art collection are: a spectacular array of Southeast Asian textiles; a range of miniature paintings from India originally intended as illustrations for albums and manuscripts; a significant collection of ukiyo-e prints from the Edo and early Meiji periods of Japan; and a rare collection of 20th century Chinese woodcuts. The TT Tsui Collection of Chinese Ceramics
The majority of Chinese works in the Asian collection are funerary goods: earthenware sculptural pottery in a variety of forms created for burial in the tombs of great noble rulers. They comprise the core of the gift from Hong Kong based entrepreneur TT Tsui.

The Asian Art Museum, San Francisco
In 1959, Chicago millionaire Avery Brundage and his wife, Elizabeth, agreed to donate the first part of his vast collection of Asian art to San Francisco on the condition that the City build a new museum wing. Known as the Avery Brundage Collection, it represents 95% of the holdings of the Asian Art Museum and it consists of almost 10,000 pieces of priceless Asian art.
In 1960, to meet the Brundage challenge, a $2,725,000 bond issue was passed by the voters of San Francisco to build the Asian Art Museum. Completed in 1966, the new museum opened June 10 1966 in space constructed as a wing of the deYoung Museum. The plan then was to leave the administrative responsibility in the hands of the Board of Trustees of the deYoung Museum. At the dedication, Avery Brundage said, "In presenting this collection to San Francisco my hope is that, together with the facilities of the region's great universities, it will help San Francisco and the Bay Area become one of the world's greatest centres of Oriental culture."
Avery Brundage continued to collect until his death in 1975. He bequeathed his remaining Asian art to the museum, making the collection by far the greatest in America. The Asian Art Museum is the first one in the United States devoted exclusively to arts of Asia.
