Southeast Asian Archaeology We offer classroom training at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Southeast Asian and Asian archaeology, and research opportunities in Southeast Asian archaeology and physical anthropology. Students have opportunities to gain analytical experience with our archaeological and skeletal collections from Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Ongoing fieldwork in southern Cambodia, through the Lower Mekong Archaeological Project (project co-director Miriam Stark), provide one of many fieldwork possibilities for the interested student. We also work actively with our colleagues from Southeast Asia and elsewhere to facilitate fieldwork opportunities for our students. A website to facilitate scholarly exchange in the field of Southeast Asian archaeology and anthropology has been created by Christopher King, University of Hawai`i, in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania Museum, Ban Chiang Project. The website came online July 9, 2001 and begins with a searchable bibliography with an initial database of over 3500 references. Users can search for references in various ways, mark the ones they need, then automatically display them in one of a dozen different journal styles pertinent to archaeologists and physical anthropologists. Users can also export the references into their personal bibliography database programs. The URL is

South Asian Archaeology 1999
From 5 to 9 July 1999, the International Institute for Asian Studies hosted South Asian Archaeology 1999 (SAA'99), the fifteenth in a series of biennial meetings which started in Cambridge back in 1967 as a rather informal get-together of European archaeologists working on South Asia. Gradually this conference has become one of the most important platforms outside South Asia for the exchange of new ideas and latest results of excavation and research by archaeologists and art historians working on South Asia and the Silk Road region.
The meeting was held in the heart of the old city of Leiden, where nearly 200 participants from Europe, the Unites States, South Asian countries, Japan, and Australia assembled at the premises of the Faculty of Arts. Convenor was Prof. Karel van Kooij who holds the special chair of South Asian art history at the Kern Institute of Leiden University. The other two members of the Organizing Committee were Dr Ellen M. Raven of the Kern Institute, and Prof. Hans T. Bakker of the University of Groningen, while the conference secretariat was co-ordinated by Drs Helga Lasschuijt of the IIAS. As usual, the paper-reading sessions spanned five days. Unlike in Rome in 1997, when the participants had to choose between 3 parallel sessions, the Leiden organizers preferred two sessions only; one on prehistory and historical archaeology; the second on historical archaeology, numismatics, epigraphy, and art history. The overwhelming response to the call for papers made it necessary, for the first time in the history of SAA, to carry out a selection process. Over 90 papers (of circa 20 minutes, with ample opportunity for discussion) were selected and scheduled. Abstracts were bundled in a handy abstract book (sent out in advance), which was accompanied at the conference by a neatly designed programme book.

The Southeast Asian Archaeology Project
Southeast Asian Archaeology focuses on a range of problems connected with early historic sites of Southeast Asia. Major topics of interest include: early trade; urbanization; maritime archaeology; evidence of communication between various parts of Southeast Asia, including both trade items and parallels in architecture and sculpture; and ceramics, both imported and local, as indicators of spheres of cultural and economic interaction.
Another area of interest concerns the search for a means of overcoming the difficulty of gaining access to primary archaeological research data, both in the form of written reports and in the form of artifact collections. ARI would like to work with various individuals and institutions to broaden access to written and visual data by scholars in the region and beyond. One way in which we hope to achieve this goal will be to provide facilities for electronic storage and retrieval of images and documents. Welcome to the South Asian Archaeology Laboratory
Cotsen Institute of Archaeology
The South Asian Archaeology Laboratory at UCLA was established in 2002 to highlight the archaeology of South Asia, the area encompassed by the modern-day countries of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. South Asia provides a wealth of exciting archaeological data, starting from the paleolithic period hundreds of thousands of years ago to the Indus Valley (Harappan) periods, the Early Historic era, and the medieval period with its palaces and temples that continue to grace the modern landscape of the Indian subcontinent.
At present, the Laboratory is involved with two research projects in South Asia: an archaeological survey and mapping project at the site of Sisupalgarh (India) and a long-term multinational project at the site of Mahasthangarh (Bangladesh).
We invite you to correspond with the laboratory's director, Dr. Monica L. Smith
