Last Updated: December 23, 2002 This collection of Web site reviews, which has now grown to include over 50 Web sites, was begun by adult literacy/basic education/ESOL educators in the Boston area in the Spring of 1996. The reviews have been compiled, edited and updated by David J. Rosen, Director of the Adult Literacy Resource Institute, the Greater Boston Regional Support Center of the Massachusetts System for Adult Basic Education Support. The first reviewers were enrolled in the 1996 Boston Internet Training Project workshops funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education. Time to produce the original document was made possible by the editor's 1995-1996 fellowship from the National Institute for Literacy. Reviews of Web sites are added periodically, and the Webliography is regularly updated. Website reviews will be found under the following categories:

Both meetings brought about educators and other service providers to examine the needs of and services to Asian and Pacific American students. Both meetings identified the critical areas of service delivery. At that time, services to the Asian and Pacific American students were limited in scope and most of the service providers were school districts and some community based organizations. In 1998, as we approach to the upcoming Census 2000, it has become necessary to re-examine the current educational services to the Asian and Pacific American (APA) communities across the nation. The APA communities are the fastest growing among all ethnic groups. The issues concerning these students at hand are identified as follows:

    Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
    May 2005
Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week was originally observed in 1978 during the first ten days of May. These days were chosen to coincide with two important anniversaries: the arrival in the United States of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. In 1992, Congress expanded the observance from ten days to the month-long celebration that we know today as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.* Skokie Public Library has hundreds of books and encyclopedia articles about the people, history, and cultures of Asia and the Pacific Islands. The Internet is also a great place to find information written by and about people of Asian and Pacific American heritage. U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao in
San Francisco Chinatown The Statue of Liberty began lighting the way for new arrivals at a time when many native-born Americans began to worry that the country was admitting too many immigrants. Some citizens feared that their culture was being threatened or that they would lose jobs to newcomers willing to accept low wages. In 1924 Congress passed the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act. For the first time, the United States set limits on how many people from each country it would admit. The number of people allowed to emigrate from a given country each year was based on the number of people from that country already living in the United States. As a result, immigration patterns over the next 40 years reflected the existing immigrant population, mostly Europeans and North Americans. Prior to 1924, U.S. laws specifically excluded Asian immigrants. People in the American West feared that the Chinese and other Asians would take away jobs, and racial prejudice against people with Asian features was widespread. The law that kept out Chinese immigrants was repealed in 1943, and legislation passed in 1952 allows people of all races to become U.S. citizens.
